The Chargers hired Brandon Staley as their head coach on Sunday. In attempt to build his staff, Staley tried to bring in one of his former peers for an interview for one of the positions. However, his request was denied.
The Rams blocked the Bolts from interviewing offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell for the same position. Staley saw O’Connell as a guy who could help with quarterback Justin Herbert’s development and call plays, but head coach Sean McVay did not want to lose him.
McVay previously allowed Matt LaFleur to leave and become the offensive coordinator for the Titans, which eventually led to him becoming the Packers’ head coach. However, he isn’t allowing the same thing to happen, at least for now.
Even though Los Angeles isn’t going to be able to bring in one that’s he familiar with, Staley will still have other options to fill the offensive coordinator spot.
