Steelers facing 2 big front-office contract situations this offseason

Should the Steelers try to sign Colbert and Tomlin this offseason.

In the offseason, every NFL team has to address its contract situations with the roster but for the Pittsburgh Steelers, it extends into the front office as well. The contract of general manager Kevin Colbert expires after the 2020 NFL draft. And the contract of head coach Mike Tomlin runs through the end of the 2021 season.

The last time the Steelers worked on Tomlin’s contract was in 2019 when they added one year to his current deal. Tomlin is one of the most successful coaches in the NFL over his tenure and one of only three head coaches the Steelers have had since 1969. Ideally, the Steelers could go a one or two-year extension with Tomlin this offseason keeping him with the team past the current expiration of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

As for Colbert, things are more complicated. The team wanted to negotiate a new contract with the general manager last offseason but Colbert opted to play his final season without a new deal. This puts his future in jeopardy with the team.

Steelers owner looking for GM Kevin Colbert to return

The Steelers could be without GM Kevin Colbert.

The biggest free agent for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason doesn’t put on a helmet on Sunday. General Manager Kevin Colbert’s contract with the Steelers is set to expire after the 2020 NFL draft and as of now, the two sides haven’t come to any sort of agreement moving forward.

Colbert chose not to negotiate a new contract last offseason leading some to believe he was planning to move on from the Steelers. Colbert has been the general manager of the Steelers since 2010. Steelers president Art Rooney II said this week he’s optimistic about getting Colbert and noted the team has to get something done and the sooner the better.

Losing Colbert would be a huge blow to Pittsburgh at a critical juncture for the franchise. The Steelers want Colbert back but with him refusing to negotiate last offseason raises serious doubts he has any interest in coming back to the Steelers.

Report: Panthers owner eyeing Steelers GM Kevin Colbert

The Steelers front office could take a big hit soon.

According to ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper could be considering current Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert as part of his rebuild of the Panthers.

Tepper was a former minority owner of the Steelers and knows Colbert well. According to Schefter, Tepper could also be looking to poach vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan. If fans don’t know who Khan is, he’s the salary cap genius who keeps this team competitive from a financial standpoint.

You hate to get all conspiracy theory but Colbert chose not to work on a new contract this offseason and is working this year without any ties to the Steelers for the next season. This could be something Colbert has been pondering and this was why he chose not to get a new contract.

The Steelers have been through tremendous roster turnover in the past year. But if they lost Colbert and Khan, it could really reset the team in terms of development.

ESPN names Kevin Colbert Steelers MVP of 1st half of season

Kevin Colbert has never been more aggressive than he has been this season.

When you think of team MVP in the NFL, the first person that comes to mind isn’t going to be the general manager. Most think about it from the perspective of a particular player or perhaps even a coach. But when ESPN asked their staff of beat writers to name the midseason MVP of their perspective teams, Pittsburgh Steelers writer Brooke Pryor went another direction with GM Kevin Colbert.

First-half MVP: General manager Kevin Colbert. The Week 3 move to trade a 2020 first-round pick for Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was met with skepticism given the Steelers’ uncertain future at quarterback. But Colbert’s big swing is paying off early: Fitzpatrick has four interceptions, including a 96-yard pick-six against the Colts. The former first-round pick has been a game-changer, and Colbert’s move to trade for him on an inexpensive rookie contract will likely continue to pay off.

Colbert has had his busiest offseason/season to date. First he trades away Antonio Brown, then trades up in the 2019 NFL draft to land linebacker Devin Bush and finally made the in-season move to acquire safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

This team is in the thick of the playoff hunt but just imagine where this team would be if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hadn’t been lost midway through the second game? Colbert might not be coming back after this season if this is the case he’s certainly going out with a bang.
