Kerwin Walton trims his list down to five finalists

Former UNC basketball guard Kerwin Walton has cut his list of finalists down to five.

Former UNC basketball wing [autotag]Kerwin Walton[/autotag] has made an update to his new recruitment here this weekend.

After announcing he was heading to the portal on the final day of the deadline, Walton took the month of May to meet with teams and is now down to five finalists.

Per Joe Tipton of On3, Walton has narrowed his list to Texas Tech, Clemson, Memphis, Oklahoma, and Kansas State. The team left off is Creighton who held the crystal ball prediction on 247Sports early on in his new recruitment.

But now, he will focus on these five schools and a decision should be coming soon.

Walton spent just two seasons at North Carolina and after an impressive first year where he was the team leader in three-point shooting, he saw his minutes drop here in 2021-22.

UNC basketball season in review: Kerwin Walton

We break down the 2021-22 season for UNC basketball guard Kerwin Walton as the Tar Heels made a Final Four run.

Going into the basketball offseason, Tar Heels Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the UNC basketball roster.

In these profiles, we will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and how they performed for head coach Hubert Davis and the team.

Next up is guard [autotag]Kerwin Walton[/autotag].

Walton entered his sophomore season coming off a big first year at UNC where he established himself as the team’s best three-point shooter. The hopes were high for him after he started 20 of the 29 games he appeared in and lead the team in three-pointers made (58). Walton also led the team in three-point percentage (.420), setting the record highest three-point % with at least 50 attempts by UNC freshman.

That wouldn’t translate into Hubert Davis’s offense as the four-star recruit saw a significant drop in playing time from 20 starts to just one. Walton’s minutes also dropped from 21.0 minutes per game to 13.3.

Year in Review

Walton started the season logging heavy minutes but slowly began to see more time on the bench than on the court. While his offensive game was what was appealing, he struggled defensively.

And that’s what forced a change in the lineup.

Walton scored in double digits three times this season compared to the 11 his freshman season. His best game of the season came in the 94-83 win over the Charleston Cougars, shooting 4 for 6 behind the arch, finishing with 14 points. But after that, things started to trend the other way for Walton.

He didn’t log significant minutes and as UNC went to a six-man rotation, he fell behind Puff Johnson and even Dontrez Styles in the pecking order.

Walton struggled seeing dips in his shooting percentage going from 42 percent at the three-point line to 35 percent this year. He also saw a dip in his shooting percentage at 44.4 to 37.3 percent.

Shortly after the season ended, Walton decided to transfer on the final day of the deadline. He is testing the NBA draft waters but also has remained in the transfer portal. Right now, it’s tough to say where he will continue his career but it appears as if Creighton is the leader to land him.

UNC Basketball: What the Tar Heels plan in the transfer portal means

The UNC basketball program is playing the ‘wait and see’ game in the transfer portal but is in a good spot to land its key targets.

The college basketball transfer portal has taken over the offseason the past two seasons and that has translated into not only spending a great deal of time recruiting from high school, but also out of the portal in order to get an instant impact player.

For the UNC basketball program, the addition of Brady Manek last season proved just that and is an example of how to use the portal correctly. But, not every team uses it the same way.

Some teams load up on transfers while others pick and choose very specific pieces to finish the roster puzzle. Either way, every team is active in the portal.

247Sports Isaac Trotter took a look at all of the Power Six teams and how they have attacked the portal. For the Tar Heels, they are waiting on their ‘Brady Manek’ type player.

Patience is a virtue for [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag]. The UNC coach can count scholarships. He can see that four starters are running it back from a team that was seconds away from winning a National Championship. He also can see that UNC has a hole at the 4 now that [autotag]Brady Manek[/autotag] has departed. North Carolina will undoubtedly land an impact forward. They’re playing the waiting game very well and are positioned to land a big fish.

The Tar Heels have one scholarship available after the departure of [autotag]Kerwin Walton[/autotag] on the final day of the one-time transfer window. With the big loss of Manek, UNC has narrowed its search to two targets.

Former Northwestern forward [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] and former Baylor forward [autotag]Matthew Mayer[/autotag] are the two players that the Tar Heels are after. Both players entered their names into the NBA Draft but only Mayer was invited to the NBA Combine.

Nance participated in the G-League Elite Camp earlier this week, but didn’t receive a special invitation to the combine meaning he is most likely expected to return to the college level.

Nance, a 6-foot-10 forward, averaged 14.6 points per game, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game a season ago. He also shot 45.2 percent from three on 3.1 attempts per game. For his career at Northwestern, he has a 9.6 point per game average and has added 5.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

Mayer, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 9.8 points per game last season. He also added 5.0 rebounds and shot 32.4 percent from three on 4.1 attempts. He has career averages of 6.9 points per game, 3.2 rebounds and shot 34.5 percent from three.

Both players have one year of eligibility remaining. The deadline to return to college and maintain your eligibility is June 1.

Former UNC wing lands prediction for Creighton

UNC basketball forward Kerwin Walton has picked up a crystal ball prediction to Creighton just a day after entering the portal.

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program thought their roster was pretty much set here in early May with the focus shifting to offseason workouts and then practices in the Fall.

But Davis and the Tar Heels were a bit shocked when [autotag]Kerwin Walton[/autotag] announced he was heading to the transfer portal on Sunday. Walton will leave UNC after two seasons and already a favorite to land him has emerged.

The Creighton Bluejays have landed a crystal ball prediction on 247Sports to be the team Walton ends up with. National recruiting analyst Travis Branham logged that prediction on Monday, giving them their lone prediction.

For Walton, finding playing time this season was tough. He was coming off a good freshman season in which he was UNC’s best perimeter shooter and while he played a lot early on, he eventually fell behind in the rotation as the season went on

Finding a spot that he can come in and play right away is ideal and Creighton may offer him the best shot at that.
