Texans G Shaq Mason says Kenyon Green ‘picks my brain a lot’

Houston Texans guard Shaq Mason can attest to second-year guard Kenyon Green being eager to learn and using him as a resource.

Shaq Mason is on his third different team in as many seasons, but he knows the drill in order to be a part of a functional offensive line.

The Houston Texans traded with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to obtain Mason’s services. The former New England Patriots 2015 fourth-round pick went to the Texans for a 2023 sixth-rounder.

To form cohesion, Mason knows it is a process.

“Really, it’s building continuity, taking it day-by-day,” Mason said. “Everybody’s out there grinding, trying to put our best foot forward. No matter who we’re playing beside, whoever the five are, I know we’re all going to be on the same page.”

The Texans have impressive pieces at two of their offensive line spots in three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil and former 2019 first-round right tackle Tytus Howard. The potential to have a third activate remains with former 2022 first-rounder Kenyon Green, who started 14 of his 15 games active last season at left guard.

According to Mason, the Texas A&M product is putting in the effort by tapping into Mason’s experience.

“Kenyon, he picks my brain a lot,” said Mason. “We’ve been talking. He’s been asking me things here and there.”

The Texans are in Phase 2 of their offseason workouts, which means there is on-field instruction but the offense and defense can’t compete against one another yet, not even in drills. The first phase of the offseason program consisted of more classroom work, which is where Green was able to demonstrate his dedication to improvement.

Said Mason: “One thing I know is that he cares. That’s a big thing coming from a guy that young. He cares about his craft. He cares about studying. He doesn’t want to mess anything up. That’s a lot coming from a young guy.”

Green, 22, had arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason.

Texans GM Nick Caserio says G Kenyon Green has ‘made progress’ in offseason

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio is pleased with the progress former 2022 first-round guard Kenyon Green has made in the offseason.

Kenyon Green will always be a subject of discussion.

There is no better example of a local product for the Houston Texans than the former 2022 first-round guard. Whether it is his alma mater, Humble Atascocita High School, or his career with Texas A&M, Green will drive interest.

As Nick Caserio joined “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] April 20, Green’s progress in the offseason was a subject the general manager had to answer.

“Kenyon has been here since February,” Caserio said. “I think he’s made progress. I think he realizes he has to put in a lot of work. I think he’s committed to doing that work. I think he knows and we know that his season was up and down, and that’s the reality of it. No one is going to sugarcoat that, but you have to take accountability, got to take ownership, and got to come up with solutions and find a way to get better. So, he’s been around over the last however many months. I want to say he’s been around since February, so, he’s working through some things.”

Green started 14 of his 15 games active for the Texans last season. The 6-4, 325-pound interior offensive lineman had to take his lumps against some fo the best defensive tackle in the game, but Green also was part of fellow rookie Dameon Pierce’s 939 rushing yards.

Said Caserio: “Any player, the most important thing they can do is control the things they can control, focus on yourself, focus on individual improvement. If you have individual improvements, then collective improvement, and then you have collective improvements, then you’ll have team improvements. So, the most important thing for those players it to take advantage of the opportunity that they have here in April and May and June and get ready for the season. Whatever your physical situation is, whatever your status is, focus on what you can control, work to get better, and you can make progress.”

Green underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, and should be available for the Texans’ offseason workouts.

“We’ll measure work in progress more when we get to the season,” said Caserio. “But you can make incremental strides here the more time you put in the offseason program.”

Laremy Tunsil embraces mentor role with young Texans

Three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil appreciates his role as mentor for the younger Houston Texans at the core of the team’s rebuild, writes @bigsargesportz

HOUSTON — There is just something about Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil that exudes leadership.

He isn’t the loudest voice in any room, which is why his exclamations of “we won, we won” were intriguing as the Texans stepped off the field at Nissan Stadium. Houston left the Tennessee Titans coal in their stocking on Christmas Eve as the Texans edged their AFC South rivals 19-14 to snap their nine-game losing streak.

Snapping the nine-game losing streak was enough to make a 6-foot-5, stoic colossus skip.

Just as Tunsil redirects edge rushers away from the quarterback, so too does the three-time Pro Bowler divert attention toward his teammates rather than bring any attention to himself.

Tunsil isn’t boisterous or animated; he lets his play do the talking for him, as it did during the 2022 season when he only allowed one sack while playing all offensive snaps for Houston. That type of play goes a long way and speaks volumes with his teammates, especially his position group.

In his press conference on Wednesday to discuss his new three-year, $75 million extension, making him the highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL. Tunsil wanted everyone to know that the focus would be on him being able to help some of the younger guys on the team become successful by being that leader they needed on and off the field.

“I’m showing those guys that it’s possible,” Tunsil said about his role in mentoring players such as right tackle Tytus Howard and offensive guard Kenyon Green. “If you stay consistent, if you work hard, the sky is the limit. I’m thankful just to be in this position to mentor those guys and show those guys that the sky is the limit. Whatever you put your mind to, you can get it done.”

Houston finished the season with a 3-14 record, their third consecutive season of winning less than five games. With David Culley and Lovie Smith being one-and-done coaches, the Texans are heading into another rebuilding season looking to find the winning ways that had them AFC contenders in the previous years.

Hiring former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator and Houston Texans player DeMeco Ryans played a significant part in the decision of the former Miami Dolphins 2016 first-round selection.

“My biggest thing with staying with the Houston Texans was I believe this organization is going to turn it around quickly,” said Tunsil. “This organization is on a rise, especially getting a guy like DeMeco Ryans in this building. He’s a young, energy guy, younger coach, and he was actually a player here too. So, getting a guy like that coming into the building means a lot. We’re trying to get things turned around.”

Tunsil is well aware that he will be teammates with many rookies and free agents on prove-it deals. Yet, he is determined to be that building block to help them and his second-year players experience that winning feeling.

“As far as my role on this team, I view myself as the X-factor for this entire team and a mentor,” Tunsil expressed to the media on Wednesday. “For the young guys like Jalen Pitre, Dameon Pierce, and Kenyon Green, I view myself as a mentor. Like a captain, a captain role.

“I want to help those guys in any way that I can. Whenever they need me, they can hit me up. If they’ve got any questions, they can hit me up. I’m here for those guys. I’m here for this team. I’m here to contribute to the team and help them to win games also.”

Report: Texans G Kenyon Green underwent arthroscopic knee surgery

Houston Texans guard Kenyon Green underwent a knee procedure at the end of the season, but should be ready by the time offseason workouts kickoff.

Kenyon Green had an offseason procedure but it should not affect his participation in the heart of the Houston Texans’ offseason workouts.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the former 2022 first-round guard had arthroscopic knee surgery after the conclusion of the 3-13-1 campaign and is expected to be back for the team’s voluntary offseason workouts starting April 3.

“I’m going to use this offseason to get my body right and have a full offseason,” Green said at the end of the season. “I’m going to talk to my agent and staff and get a good plan and get all the potential and all the time and all of the work I can to get better this offseason.”

Green also had a procedure last offseason to clean up his meniscus.

The Humble Atascocita High School product started 14 of his 15 games played last season.

The Texas A&M product is going through his rehab at NRG Stadium.

Tyler Smith, DaRon Bland jump way up in 2022 redraft; Cowboys take CB, OG

In this do-over, Tyler Smith and DaRon Bland aren’t Cowboys. Would an SEC DB and a big-name lineman have made a difference in the season? | From @ToddBrock24f7

With only two teams still in game-prep mode and a shiny championship trophy on the line, the fanbases of 30 other NFL clubs are living out a far more disappointed version of the reality they had fervently believed was coming their way just a few months prior.

For those not in Chiefs Kingdom or Iggles Nation, it’s already the multiverse time of year. And while mock drafts let the faithful gaze into their crystal balls to imagine a new and improved future, redrafts allow for a hypothetical what-if look back at the season that might have been.

ESPN asked its NFL Nation reporters to rewind to April 28, 2022 and make their teams’ first two rounds of picks again, this time factoring in everything we learned about how last year’s rookies actually played over the course of their debut seasons.

In a do-over where there are no secrets or surprises, the Cowboys lose out on their impressive first-rounder and let their second-rounder fall. But every selection has a ripple effect of possibilities, and Dallas walks away from this imaginary exercise with two totally different players for the 2023 season.

Would they have changed the outcome of the season, for better or worse? That’s up for debate… maybe something Cowboys fans can chew on while they’re watching other teams battle for the Lombardi.

Texans OL coach George Warhop still sees G Kenyon Green as ‘work in progress’

Houston Texans offensive line coach George Warhop still views first-round guard Kenyon Green as a “work in progress.”

Kenyon Green has played 13 games, starting in 12 of them, but his offensive line coach believes the first-rounder can show more improvement in the final two games.

Green has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, but should be good to go against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17 at NRG Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Houston Texans offensive line coach George Warhop likes what he has seen from the Texas A&M product, but sees areas where he still has to develop.

“Kenyon is still a work in progress in my mind,” said Warhop. “He does some really good things, and there’s some things we got to fix. We’re just working those things out.”

Warhop doesn’t compare Green to other young players. Instead Warhop is measuring Green against what the Humble Atascocita High School alumnus is being asked within offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton’s system.

“When you get players, you don’t look at one young player and compare them to the next,” Warhop explained. “My deal is, ‘Hey are you doing it the way we ask? Are you trying to get it done? How are you progressing with that?’ And he’s been doing that.”

Green left Week 14’s 27-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys with an ankle injury. The Texans shuffled right tackle Tytus Howard to left guard and substituted Charlie Heck in place of Howard at right tackle.

Warhop noted Green had challenges in his rookie season going against stellar defensive tackles such as Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen in Week 11 against Washington, who completely dominated the line of scrimmage and shut down Houston’s run game.

Said Warhop: “He was doing really well, kind of hit some hiccups, then he got back on track. That’s just the process with a young guy.”

With Green returning to the lineup, the Texans should be able to move Howard back to right tackle against the Jaguars.

Kenyon Green injured vs. Cowboys

The first-round pick left the field with an injury in the #Texans’ Week 14 matchup against the Dallas #Cowboys

Houston Texans rookie guard Kenyon Green was injured against the Dallas Cowboys in the first quarter of the intrastate matchup. He was replaced by Justin McCray.

The injury came on a third down deep in Cowboys territory where the Texans failed to convert for third down. Quarterback Davis Mills had been replaced by Jeff Driskel for the play, and Houston ran the ball to Green’s side of the offensive line.

It was determined that Green’s injury was to his ankle, and he is to be considered questionable as of the middle of the second quarter. The loss of Green on the Texans’ offensive line would be a huge blow to the offense, which seems to have found its stride early in this game. Green has had his share of struggles in 2022, but the first-round pick is building valuable experience in his starting role that should serve him well for years to come.

The Texans are still to be considered underdogs in this matchup despite their three-point lead in the second quarter, and the loss of Green is sure to have an impact on the offense for the rest of the game.

Texans vs. Browns Thursday injury report: G Kenyon Green downgraded

The Houston Texans released their second injury report of Week 13 and G Kenyon Green was downgraded.

The Houston Texans released their second injury report as they gear up to face the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium for Week 13.

Guard Kenyon Green (illness) was downgraded from limited on Wednesday to a non-participant on Thursday.

Joining Green were running back Rex Burkhead (concussion) and cornerback Derek Stingley (hamstring).

Although receiver Brandin Cooks was held out of Wednesday’s practice for rest, his limited status on Thursday could be considered a downgrade as he remained on the injury report with a calf injury.

Also limited in practice was linebacker Christian Harris (shoulder).

Linebacker Blake Cashman (knee) and defensive tackle Maliek Collins (chest) were upgraded to full participants.

For information on Cleveland’s injury report, check out the Browns Wire.

Texans without both first rounders Derek Stingley, Kenyon Green in Thursday’s practice

With three days until the Browns vs. Texans takes place, Houston is still without three starters in practice.

While the Cleveland Browns are still without two key starters from Thursday’s practice, the Houston Texans are also missing key players. Not only was starting defensive tackle, Maliek Collins, missing Thursday but so were both of their first round rookies in cornerback Derek Stingley and offensive guard Kenyon Green.

We will get a better picture of who will be available for Sunday’s game tomorrow, but both teams are missing significant talents with just three days until the Browns and Texans take the field in Houston. Even if they are without a couple of starters, losing to the team that currently holds the number one pick in the 2023 NFL Draft would be nothing short of devastating.

Texans OC Pep Hamilton expects rookie G Kenyon Green to bounce back

Houston Texans OC Pep Hamilton says that first-round G Keyon Green should bounce back in Week 12 after a humbling outing the week prior.

Count Kenyon Green among the many Houston Texans who did not have a good time during Washington’s 23-10 chokehold in Week 11.

The Texas A&M product committed two holding penalties, one of which was accepted, and had an ineligible man downfield penalty. Green was also walked back into one of quarterback Davis Mills’ five sacks on the afternoon.

The Humble Atascocita product was going against two of the best defensive tackles in the game in Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen. Making his ninth career start among his 10 game day activations, Green was at a disadvantage.

Even though Green had a bad week, offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton believes the first-rounder will bounce back against the Miami Dolphins.

“We expect that he’s going to continue to work to embrace the technique that he’s been taught because he’s extremely talented,” Hamilton told reporters Nov. 23. “It’s just part of the process from week-to-week. It’s understanding that guys are going to watch us on film and the opponent is going to watch us on film and come up with ways to counter the things they see us do. I’m certain we’ll continue to watch Kenyon’s progress as he continues to play.”

Green will be going against another talented defensive tackle in the Dolphins’ Christian Wilkins, who has 1.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, and a pass breakup on the season.
