Bob Baffert somehow thinks ‘cancel culture’ is to blame for Medina Spirit doping allegations

What?

Let’s spell out the facts surrounding what’s going on with 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit and trainer Bob Baffert for you so we’re not all confused: the thoroughbred tested positive for betamethasone — per the Courier-Journal, “a corticosteroid … [that can] suppress inflammation, according to the Mayo Clinic. They can additionally suppress the immune system.”

Baffert is disputing the test results — he said he has no idea where the drug came from — and a second positive test would disqualify Medina Spirit as the Derby winner.

The next step for Baffert was to deny wrongdoing to the media, and one ridiculous statement he’s made — and repeated! — is making the rounds. First, here’s what he said to FOX News:

“Churchill Downs came out with that statement that was pretty harsh. With all the noise going out … we live in a different world now, this America is different. It was like a cancel-culture kind of a thing.”

What? What does so-called “cancel culture” have to do with a positive drug test? Maybe he was mistaken, there’s no way he’d repeat that again to another outlet? Right?

Nope!

Here’s more from that Dan Patrick interview:

If there really was a conspiracy against Baffert and Medina Spirit, that would really be something.

But a positive drug test is not “cancel culture,” whatever that’s supposed to be. And it’s laughable for Baffert to use that phrase here, an attempt to win some sort of battle in the court of public opinion by throwing out a meaningless and politically-charged phrase thrown around way too often.

I would say nice try, but it’s really not. At least stick to the possibility of an accident with stories like these:

Steve Kornacki correctly called Medina Spirit to win the Kentucky Derby, and fans loved it

Steve Kornacki for the win!

Steve Kornacki, the NBC News and MSNBC national political correspondent, became a viral sensation during election week in November, and since then, he’s been part of other NBC broadcasts, including Sunday Night Football.

People latched onto and appreciated Kornacki for several reasons, his trustworthiness, enthusiasm and insightful analysis among them. He and his famous khaki pants returned to the world of sports Saturday for the Kentucky Derby, and fans of his were so excited.

The love for Kornacki remained consistent as he contributed to NBC’s broadcast and broke down how and why the odds for the Triple Crown leg changed. As he said Saturday, he’s just trying to make sense of all the numbers — something viewers now trust him to do on a variety of subjects.

And then Kornacki’s analysis turned out to be perfectly spot on with him correctly predicting Medina Spirit would win the 147th Kentucky Derby with  12-1 odds.

And as Kornacki periodically appeared on NBC’s Kentucky Derby broadcast, his fans just couldn’t get enough of him, especially after he called the winner.

Watch Medina Spirit win the 2021 Kentucky Derby in thrilling fashion

Medina Spirit took an early lead and never lost it in the 147th Kentucky Derby.

Medina Spirit took an early lead right out of the gates for Saturday’s 147th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and never relinquished it, holding off its hard-charging competitors for a thrilling four-wide finish.

The only real time Medina Spirit, a Bob Baffert trainee, saw serious competition for the lead was coming off the final turn when Mandaloun was nearly even with the front-runner. Down the last stretch, Hot Rod Charlie and race favorite Essential Quality tried to keep pace with the leaders, and at one point, it looked like any one of those horses could win the first leg of the Triple Crown.

But Medina Spirit with jockey John R. Velazquez held on for the victory — and a record seven Kentucky Derby wins for Hall of Fame trainer Baffert — while Mandaloun, Hot Rod Charlie and Essential Quality finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

(Velazquez and Baffert also won last year’s Kentucky Derby with Authentic.)

Check out this exciting finish:

“If you have him on the lead, he’ll fight,” Baffert told NBC Sports after the race.

See the athletes attending the Kentucky Derby, including Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers

“It’s just the excitement,” Aaron Rodgers said about loving the Kentucky Derby.

The 2021 Kentucky Derby is Saturday and set to start at 6:57 p.m. ET on NBC, but the festivities at Churchill Downs began long before that.

Along with the tradition of some fun and outrageous hats paired with refreshing mint juleps, celebrities and athletes were in attendance — though it doesn’t appear to be nearly as many as usual. Those celebrating the Run for the Roses included reigning Super Bowl champ and MVP Tom Brady and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, who was there with actor and fiancée Shailene Woodley, Packers teammates David Bakhtiari and Randall Cobb, former Packer A.J. Hawk and actor Miles Teller.

“It’s not always like this, but the weather’s obviously amazing today, but it’s just the excitement,” Rodgers told TwinSpires Racing on Saturday from Churchill Downs when asked why he loves to watch the Kentucky Derby in person.

“It’s different this year with less people, but there’s not many things more exciting than the feeling — whether it’s the first race of the day or the Kentucky Derby or the [Kentucky] Oaks yesterday – when the horses all get in the stall and they’re off. It’s exciting, and when they come down the backstretch, there’s not many greater feelings, especially when your horse is in the lead.”

Here’s a look at some of the athletes at the 2021 Kentucky Derby on Saturday (and we’ll continue to update this as we spot more):

How did Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady spend first Saturday in May?

Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady were in attendance at the Kentucky Derby

Aaron Rodgers has been in the news for the past few days. The quarterback isn’t happy in Green Bay, according to multiple reports.

However, he looked quite content on Saturday while taking in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Check out the photo and that would be Rodgers to the far left in the dapper hat with a huge smile. He is pictured with Packer teammates, friends and, of course, fiancee Shailene Woodley

Watch: Chaos after Kentucky Derby as Authentic sends Bob Baffert sprawling

Authentic took out all his Kentucky Derby rivals and then clobbered his trainer Bob Baffert after the victory.

The Kentucky Derby was more eventful after the race than it was during it for Authentic and trainer Bob Baffert.

After the 3-year-old son of Into Mischief won the race as a 9-1 shot at Churchill Downs, he created quite the scene post-race.

Watch as Authentic turns around and knocks the trainer and others to the ground.

Everyone appears to be okay. Baffert got up and was able to conduct the post-race interview with NBC.
