CB Kenny Moore Colts’ nominee for 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

Cornerback Kenny Moore is the Indianapolis Colts’ nominee for the 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

The Indianapolis Colts nominated cornerback Kenny Moore as the team’s 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

One player from each team is nominated and the winner of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award will be announced on February 8th, 2025.

This is the second time that Moore has been nominated for the award. His first nomination came in 2021.

“The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field, is the most prestigious honor an NFL player can receive,” wrote the Colts’ team site.

For more on Moore’s impact off of the field, check out the video below:

On the field, as he has done for a number of years now with the Colts, Moore continues to make an impact in a variety of ways.

He’s been a sound tackler and has been one of the most productive cornerbacks in football against the run, ranking second among his position group in run stops. Meanwhile in coverage, Moore is holding pass-catchers to just 7.9 yards per reception with three pass breakups and an interception.

Below is the 2024 nominee for each of the 32 NFL teams:

PFF ranks Colts’ Kenny Moore among top coverage CBs in 2024

Through 10 weeks, Pro Football Focus ranks the Indianapolis Colts’ Kenny Moore among the best coverage cornerbacks this season.

Through 10 Weeks, the Indianapolis Colts’ Kenny Moore is among Pro Football Focus’ highest-ranked cornerbacks this season.

Following his performance this past Sunday against Buffalo, Moore jumped from No. 16 in these cornerback rankings to No. 12 heading into a Week 11 matchup with the Jets.

Factoring into these rankings is each corner’s coverage grade from PFF, along with their Successful Coverage Over Expected metric, measuring how well a defender performed on non-targeted coverage snaps. Also taken into consideration is who the cornerback is matched up against.

At the top of the list so far this season is Baltimore’s Marlon Humphrey, the New York Jets’ DJ Reed, and Buffalo’s Christian Benford.

As he has throughout his career with the Colts, Moore continues to do a little bit of everything for this defense, including playing both from the slot and out wide depending on what alignment they are in.

Coverage-wise, he’s allowed 29 completions on 44 targets, which isn’t uncommon for a primary slot presence, but where Moore has really excelled is limiting those pass-catchers to just 7.1 yards per catch, illustrating how tight he is in coverage.

Moore also came away with his first interception of the year this past Sunday, and has three pass breakups in total, along with 35 solo tackles, including 10 run stops–the fourth-most among cornerbacks.

Awaiting Moore and the Colts’ secondary this Sunday is a Jets’ offense, that while it has had its ups and downs, still features Aaron Rodgers at quarterback along with Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams at wide receiver.

Indianapolis Colts injury update: CB Kenny Moore active vs. Titans

The Indianapolis Colts secondary gets a much-needed boost against the Titans with CB Kenny Moore available for this game.

The Indianapolis Colts secondary will get a much-needed boost this week against the Tennessee Titans with cornerback Kenny Moore available for this matchup.

Moore has been sidelined that last two games after suffering a hip injury in the Colts’ Week 3 matchup against the Chicago Bears. He returned to practice for the first time this week and has been trending in the right direction as a full participant on Friday. He was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.

Prior to missing time, Moore had allowed 11 receptions on 16 targets but held opponents to only 7.8 yards per catch and had two pass breakups.

He was particularly good against the Bears, surrendering just five completions on a hefty 10 targets but giving up only 19 yards while recording a pass breakup. Moore also had a sack in that game as well.

Through those three games, Moore would rank among the best–coming in at eighth–in Pro Football Focus’ new advanced coverage metric.

Over the last three games, the Colts’ secondary has been picked apart by opponents, giving up over 1,000 combined passing yards to Caleb Williams, Justin Fields, and Trevor Lawrence.

An improved pass rush will provide the back end with some needed help, but the play has to improve as well. In addition to getting Moore back, Kwity Paye is available as well.

Filling in for Moore these last two games was Chris Lammons in the slot and Sam Womack on the boundary when the Colts are in their base 4-3 defense.

This week, the Colts face a Titans’ offense that has been turnover-prone and inconsistent through the air.

Colts CB Kenny Moore not practicing on Wednesday heading into Week 5

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore will not be practicing on Wednesday ahead of the team’s Week 5 matchup vs. the Jaguars.

Prior to Wednesday’s practice taking place, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore told reporters that he would not be practicing today.

Moore is still working through a hip injury that he suffered late in the Colts’ Week 3 win over the Chicago Bears. Moore did not practice at all last week and did not play this past Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before this injury, Moore had been one of the better coverage cornerbacks in football through three games by Pro Football Focus’ advanced coverage metric.

In Moore’s place, Chris Lammons manned the slot against the Steelers. Lammons finished that game with a sack, a big fumble recovery near midfield, and allowed four receptions on five targets for 62 yards, according to PFF.

On the boundary opposite of Jaylon Jones in this matchup was primarily Sam Womack, who took the majority of those snaps after splitting playing time with Dallis Flowers the last two weeks.

Jones was able to come up with a pair of big interceptions against the Bears and Womack had two key pass breakups against the Steelers, but the depth of this Colts’ secondary–which was already an unknown–is being tested right now.

Currently, the 7.1 yards per pass attempt that the Colts are allowing is the eight-most in football through four games.

Without Kenny Moore, Colts already thin CB depth will be challenged vs. Steelers

Without Kenny Moore this Sunday, the Colts already thin cornerback depth will be put to the test against the Steelers.

The Indianapolis Colts already thin cornerback room will be put to the test even further this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with head coach Shane Steichen mentioning after Friday’s practice that Kenny Moore would be out.

Moore suffered a hip injury late in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears and did not practice at all during the week.

The Colts have already been without JuJu Brents, who was placed on injured reserve after the team’s Week 1 loss to Houston. Now, without Moore, the cornerback room consists of Jaylon Jones, Sam Womack, Dallis Flowers, and Chris Lammons.

With Moore on the field, we’ve seen Womack and Flowers rotating at the boundary position opposite of Jones. So one option for Indianapolis is to continue doing that with Lammons playing in the slot.

Another route the Colts could go is starting Womack at the nickel, where he does have experience, then leaving Flowers to take all of the boundary cornerback snaps.

This week the Colts are facing a run-heavy Steelers offense that ranks second in rush attempts per game and 12th in rushing yards per game.

Through the air, however, Justin Fields has been an efficient passer, completing 73 percent of his throws at 6.9 yards per attempt with two touchdowns and one interception.

His top targets have been George Pickens, Calvin Austin, who lines up primarily in the slot, and tight end Pat Freiermuth.

The cornerback position was a big unknown entering the offseason for the Colts, but GM Chris Ballard chose to largely rely heavily on the internal development of players that were already on the roster. That strategy is now being put to the test right away this season.

Colts CB Kenny Moore ranks among the best in PFF’s advanced coverage grade

Colts CB Kenny Moore ranks among the best in PFF’s new advanced coverage grade metric.

Pro Football Focus is rolling out a new advanced coverage metric and ranked among the best cornerbacks in this category is the Colts’ Kenny Moore.

For more on how this metric is calculated, click here, but here is a brief synopsis from PFF of what goes into this coverage grade:

“Advanced coverage grade uses machine learning to map the separation allowed on a play to the expected PFF coverage grade the player would have earned had they been targeted.”

PFF adds that they system factors in the difficulty of the assignment, the situation at hand, and other variables.

Through three games, out of all cornerbacks who have played at least 25 snaps up to this point, Moore is currently ranked eighth in this advanced metric. At the top of the list is Buffalo’s Christian Benford, Baltimore’s Marlon Humphrey, and Kansas City’s Trent McDuffie.

On the season, Moore has allowed 11 completions on 16 targets, but held pass-catchers to just 7.8 yards per catch with two pass breakups.

Moore’s performance this past Sunday against Chicago was particularly impressive. The Bears passing game targeted Moore often, throwing his way 10 times. However, Moore allowed only five completions and 19 total yards with a pass breakup. He also recorded a sack as well.

Moore has mostly played from the slot but does move to the boundary when the Colts are lined up in their base 4-3 defense.

For a position group that, overall, is still facing unknowns about their play as well as concerns about the depth, Moore playing at a high level is a must for this secondary.

Ahead of the Colts’ Week 4 matchup with Pittsburgh, Moore is on the injury report after exiting last week’s game with a hip injury. He did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday.

Week 4: Potential absence of Colts’ CB Kenny Moore could greatly benefit Steelers’ offense

Colts’ star CB Kenny Moore could be a potential absence in Week 4, and could heavily benefit the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive game plan.

With only a few more days left until the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Indianapolis to take on the 1-2 Colts, all eyes are on the injuries for both teams.

While the Steelers have had more than their fair share of heartbreaking injuries, the Colts may have to prepare for a game plan excluding their star cornerback, Kenny Moore, in Week 4.

While the Colts’ defense has struggled against the pass, ranking 22nd in passing yards allowed, Moore was one of the few bright spots for the unit.  He is one of the best slot corners in the league and plays the run almost as good as he does the pass.

His backup, Chris Lammons, is also injured, further creating a massive advantage for the Steelers if Moore cannot play.

The Steelers’ offensive strategy will more than likely soar on Sunday in Week 4.  George Pickens, Calvin Austin, Scotty Miller, and Van Jefferson will surely look to take advantage of the Colts’ poor pass defense and the absence of elite playmaking from Kenny Moore.

Colts CB Kenny Moore will not practice Wednesday ahead of matchup vs. Steelers

Head coach Shane Steichen said that CB Kenny Moore will not practice on Wednesday ahead of the Colts Week 4 matchup versus the Steelers.

The Indianapolis Colts were back at practice on Wednesday as they begin preparing for their Week 4 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before practice began, head coach Shane Steichen met with reporters and said that cornerback Kenny Moore would not be practicing on Wednesday, according to the Indy Star’s Joel Erickson.

The Colts will see how Moore progresses throughout the week before making a decision on his status for Sunday’s game.

Also not practicing on Wednesday was defensive end Kwity Paye.

Late in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears, Moore exited with a hip injury. No further updates have been provided at this time.

Moore had an excellent performance in that game. In coverage, he was targeted heavily, but allowed only five completions on those 10 targets and held the Chicago pass-catchers to just 19 total yards. Moore also recorded a pass breakup and a sack, according to PFF.

The opponent this week, the Steelers, are a run-heavy team, ranking second currently in rush attempts per game and 27th in pass attempts per game.

The nickel cornerback already plays an important role in run defense, but this week, that ability may be at a premium. When the Colts are in their base 4-3 defense, Moore moves to the boundary cornerback position opposite of Jaylon Jones.

The Colts are already thin at the cornerback position. Chris Lammons and Sam Womack are backup options at the nickel position for the Colts.

Colts injury news: No updates on CB Kenny Moore or DE Kwity Paye

Both Kwity Paye and Kenny Moore exited Sunday’s game with injuries. Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen didn’t have any updates as of Monday.

During Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore, and defensive end Kwity Paye each exited the game late in the fourth quarter.

On Monday, head coach Shane Steichen met with reporters but did not have any updates on either player at that time.

Paye suffered a quad injury that required him getting helped off the field. After the game, Paye said that he would get scans on the injury, but according to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star, Paye sounded “somewhat optimistic.”

Moore would leave Sunday’s game with a hip injury that he sustained while trying to breakup a pass late. As of now, we do not have any other information.

Both Paye and Moore played key roles in the Colts’ defensive showing against the Bears. Paye helped set a strong edge against the run that helped limit the Chicago run game and also totaled five pressures, which were tied with Laiatu Latu for the most on the team.

Moore, meanwhile, was one of the Colts’ highest-graded defenders in this game by PFF’s metrics. He would make seven tackles and record a sack. In coverage, Moore allowed only five completions on 10 targets for 19 yards with one pass breakup.

Wednesday the Colts will be back on the field as they prepare to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. At that time we will gain additional clarity around the injuries for both players.

WATCH: Colts’ CB Kenny Moore with interception vs. Broncos

Watch as Colts’ cornerback Kenny Moore comes away with an interception in the team’s preseason opener against the Broncos.

Colts’ cornerback Kenny Moore came away with an interception in the Colts’ preseason opener against the Denver Broncos.

Coming away with this interception was a group effort. On a second and 20, rookie defensive end Laiatu Latu pressured quarterback Jarrett Stidham who then threw to running back Samaje Perine in the flat.

It looked like Perine started to turn upfield before fully securing the ball, and as he often is, linebacker Zaire Franklin was nearby to further complicate things for the Denver running back. With the ball being batted around, Moore was in position to make the interception.

Moore is now in this eighth NFL season and signed a three-year deal in the offseason to remain with the Colts through the 2026 season.

Throughout his career, Moore has been very durable, playing over 1,000 snaps in three of the last four seasons. He’s been a sound tackler and had good ball production, recording at least three interceptions in four seasons and at least six pass breakups in three of his NFL seasons.

Moore will again see most of his snaps come from the nickel, but when the Colts are in base and have only two cornerbacks on the field, he will move to the boundary.
