Mac Jones explains what he saw on pinpoint, deep pass to Kendrick Bourne

The rookie QB gives some context on how evolving deep ball.

The biggest critique against Mac Jones has been his inability to make big plays and throw the deep ball.

Jones, as he’s been doing all season, continues to prove everyone wrong and he executed a perfect deep pass to Kendrick Bourne late in the Patriots’ 53-14  rout of the New York Jets. Jones threw 24-of-36 on the day with 307 and two touchdowns — his first 300-yard game of his career.

Bourne, who had a passing touchdown and four catches for 68 yards on the day, dusted his defender and brought in the 46-yard reception.

Jones spoke with reporters following the game and discussed the play.

“I think it was just a one-on-one opportunity, and all of our guys got open, and it’s just pick your poison,” Jones said. “I just had good time in the pocket, offensive line did a good job protecting, and then just let it go, and he made a good play. We can continue to do that and just continue to refine other areas that we want to work on. So that was a good start.”

Jones and the Patriots proved potential on both sides of the ball — but, now it will need to translate against teams with more talent than the Jets.

Outside of injuries and a few mental lapses, the New England Patriots looked sharp and dominant in the 54-13 win over the New York Jets in Week 7.

Mac Jones’ comfortability within the Patriots’ offense is growing weekly and it resulted in a game where he threw 24-of-36 for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Jonnu Smith, who did leave the game with a shoulder injury, was the focal point of the Patriots’ offense in the first half.

The defense came away with two interceptions and Damien Harris continued to prove why he’s the lead player in the backfield. New England players believe they’re better than what their record indicates and they gave a glimpse against that against the Jets.

Here’s the Patriots’ winners and losers from the game — there’s much more winners than losers this week.

Patriots fans extremely optimistic following beatdown of the Jets in Week 7

Despite beating a struggling Jets team, Patriots fans have a lot to look forward to with this win.

Bill Belichick finally gets his first home win of the year.

For the second time this season, the New England Patriots dominated the New York Jets. The Patriots walked away with a 54-13 victory and players stepped up all across the board. Mac Jones threw for 24-of-36 for 307 yards and two touchdowns — with a 67 completion percentage and 111.7 rating.

Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith made their mark and Damien Harris put together his second consecutive 100-yard game with a touchdown. Brandon Bolden was surprisingly the Patriots’ top pass-catcher with six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Although it was just the Jets — there were a lot of positive takeaways and momentum will be built from this win.

Here’s how Patriots fans are feeling about the win.

Patriots dupe Jets for trick-play touchdown

Kendrick Bourne to Nelson Agholor as the Patriots’ trick play works for a TD

It borders on unfair.

No matter what the records, the New England Patriots using trick plays against the meek New York Jets seems harsh.

However, Bill Belichick is going to do anything and everything to get his team an edge.

Less than three minutes into the game Sunday at Foxboro, the Patriots went trickeration and it worked.

Mac Jones to Kendrick Bourne, who found Nelson Agholor lost in the Gang Green secondary for a touchdown and a Patriots lead.

Nelson Agholor lauds Mac Jones’ toughness, passion and ability to bounce back

“Every week he just bounces back and comes to practice with a smile on his face ready to work hard because losing hurts.”

Many people on and off the New England Patriots roster can agree that this current team isn’t what the 2-4 record suggests.

Jonnu Smith vocalized this point and a lot of it has come down to costly turnovers, along with a lack of aggressiveness on fourth down. The bright spot is Mac Jones’ growth and progress each game. The rookie brought games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys down to the wire and his mental toughness has been on full display.

Nelson Agholor spoke about Jones’ poise while speaking to reporters on Thursday.

“Tough kid. Super tough kid,” Agholor said. “Truly loves the game of football. That’s one thing I’ll say. Because some of these things that have happened, they’ve been tough on him, and I can tell his passion and his love and respect for this game. Every week he just bounces back and comes to practice with a smile on his face ready to work hard because losing hurts. He doesn’t like it and I have a lot of respect for him because of that.”

As for the aforementioned 2-4 record, Agholor can see hope ahead.

“We’re really tested right now. We’re battle tested,” he said. “There’s no moral victories, but there is growth that comes with tests. I think right now we’ve seen these situations and we understand that a little bit more effort, a little more focus, a little more detail here and there, then things come out in our favor. I think we these battles that we’ve had, the greatest thing that will come from it is the growth.”

The Patriots’ next test is against the New York Jets at home — which should be a fairly easy victory.

Patriots WR Kendrick Bourne had a wildly specific compliment for Mac Jones

Who throws a better ball, Mac Jones or Jimmy Garoppolo?

Kendrick Bourne got to play the game of comparisons on Tuesday. During an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand,” Bourne shared some thoughts on how playing with his current quarterback, Mac Jones, compares to playing with his former quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo, a 2017 second-round pick, was once thought to be the man who would take over for Tom Brady. Instead, Brady has persisted with unprecedented longevity, and Bill Belichick traded Garoppolo to the 49ers. Jones is now that guy, the franchise QB.

So who throws the better ball?

“That’s a good question, man,” said Bourne, who caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jones in Sunday’s overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys. “I would say for the velocity part, Mac, he’s throwing it hard, but when you catch it, it’s like a pillow, man. I would definitely say that. I don?t know. He’s special, man. Jimmy — Jimmy’s got a rifle, and it comes in harder. So that’s the difference, I would say, about the two. Timing-wise, they both are pretty solid. It’s all about pocket, pressure, stuff like that. Velocity is just the most different between them, I would say.

“But Mac, man, I’m just really blessed to be in the situation with him and starting this new era of New England football that, you know, it’s the same, but it’s just new players. I’m just glad to be a part of it, man.”

It sounds like Bourne loves playing with Jones. That’s a good sign.

Dak Prescott is high on Mac Jones’ potential for these two reasons

Dak Prescott believes in Mac Jones for these reasons.

For the second time this season, Mac Jones took one of the NFL’s top teams to the wire and lost in heartbreaking fashion.

The first difficult loss was against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the rain at Gillette Stadium. Jones had an insane 19 consecutive completions and the Patriots lost because of a missed 56-yard field goal.

In a Week 6 thriller against the Dallas Cowboys, the New England Patriots lost 35-29 in overtime on a touchdown from CeeDee Lamb. Before the Patriots made it to overtime, Jones quickly shrugged off a pick-six to Trevon Diggs by throwing a 75-yard touchdown to Kendrick Bourne.

The Cowboys followed up with a field goal to bring it to overtime and the rest was history after that. There were some positive takeaways from the loss and NBC Sports’ Peter King discussed them in the King’s Football Morning In America column.

He specifically dove into Prescott’s opinion on Jones.

First, I want to pass along something we talked about after discussing this game. New England quarterback Mac Jones lost Sunday, and he threw what should have been a game-killing pick-six to Trevon Diggs (the ball just finds this guy) with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter. I said to Prescott how impressive it was that Jones, on the very next snap, threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to get New England back in it, and how impressive it was that Jones took three or four brutal shots on the day and just kept playing Rocky Balboa. He kept coming back for more.

Prescott didn’t wait for me to finish. “Those two things that you just said, honestly, are the two most important things to be really good at this position. You gotta be able to take a lick and not flinch and make the play when the hard hit’s coming. And when you have a bad play or an interception and the game changes right there, you gotta have the water-down-a-duck’s-back mentality. Let it go. It’s over. Mac’s got that. I really like what I see out of him. He’ll be a good quarterback for a long time.”

Jones has a lot to learn still, but his poise and ability to bounce back from mistakes will be instrumental in his growth.

What happened to Dallas’ defense on Kendrick Bourne’s 75-yard touchdown?

How did Mac Jones and the Patriots beat Trevon Diggs and the Cowboys on Kendrick Bourne’s 75-yard touchdown pass?

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs had just picked off New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones and returned the interception 42 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys led the Patriots 26-21 as a result of that play, and given Jones’ iffy history with deep passes in his rookie season (in the Patriots’ first five games, Jones had completed four of 19 passes of 20 or more air yards for 97 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 8.8, making him the NFL’s least-efficient deep passer by a mile), it looked as if that would be all it took for the Cowboys to leave Gillette Stadium with their fifth win of the season.

But as they say, not so fast. On New England’s very next offensive play, Jones hit receiver Kendrick Bourne for a 75-yard touchdown pass in which Diggs was at the epicenter. Diggs, who became the second player since 1970 with seven interceptions in his team’s first six games of the season (Rod Woodson, 1993), and the second player in the Super Bowl era to record one interception in his team’s first six games (Brian Russell, 2003), looked more like a second-year cornerback involved in a bust on Bourne’s double move.

But was he? Or, was free safety Damontae Kazee the problem?

The Cowboys were in Cover-1 on the play. No surprise there, as coming into this game, per Sports Info Solutions, Dallas’ defense had been at its best with a single-high safety and man across the board. The Cowboys had aligned in Cover-1 on 59 opponent attempts, fourth-most in the league. They had allowed 29 catches on those 59 attempts for 508 yards, no touchdowns, four interceptions, and a QBR allowed of 50.7. Only the Bills (37.3) had allowed a lower QBR in Cover-1, and the Bills have the NFL’s best defense. So, that part of the equation worked.

At the snap, Bourne turned Diggs around in leverage on the out-and-up, which meant that Diggs now had outside leverage. Here’s what I think happened. The Cowboys did not expect that route to go as deep as it did, and Kazee responded on his own to Bourne’s move, thinking that he had to scream down from the deep third to save the play.

The Cowboys had safety Jayron Kearse as the hole defender in the middle of the call, so this wasn’t some kind of “Robber” or “Jump” situation where Kazee was responsible for that. Robber would have Kazee staying up top while somebody else “robbed” underneath, and Jump would have Diggs replacing Kazee as the deep defender. If we are to take Diggs at his word in the postgame press conference. perhaps it was some sort of call where Diggs was supposed to replace Kazee up top. But this could have just as easily been Diggs trying to take responsibility for something that wasn’t all his fault.

“They came right back,” Diggs said. “[Bourne] hit a double move, and I kinda let up. It was my fault. I should have been on top of it, and I take full accountability for that. It was my fault, and I’m going to be better on that.”

So, this looks more like a situation in which Kazee responded to Bourne beating Diggs’ initial alignment with the out-and-up, and trying to prevent what he thought would be a shorter pass.

“A little bit of both,” Diggs said with a smile when asked if either Kazee was going for the ball and taking him out of the play, or if he thought he and Kazee might collide. “At the end of the day, it’s still my man, so I can’t rely on the safety to be right there. I take full responsibility for that.”

The Cowboys eventually won the game 35-29 in overtime, and Diggs continued a fabulous season in which he’s been the NFL’s best eraser most of the time. But as this shows, the right play design and a couple of errant steps can create a big play. Even for a quarterback who had been abysmal on deep passes, and even against a defense in its ideal coverage.

Kendrick Bourne relays Bill Belichick’s message to Patriots following loss to Cowboys

The New England Patriots receiver will remain optimistic going forward.

The New England Patriots suffered their third close loss of the season after falling 35-29 to the Dallas Cowboys in overtime.

Bill Belichick’s team, currently standing 2-4, had positive plays and promising moments throughout the game — but, CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott were too much to handle. Prescott passed for 445 yards, which is the most under a Belichick-coached Patriots team. Lamb had nine catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns, one of which was the game-winner.

Kendrick Bourne was the only Patriots receiver with an explosive play and that was a 75-yard electrifying touchdown that gave New England the lead in the fourth quarter.

Bourne spoke with reporters after the game and relayed Belichick’s message to the team following the devastating loss.

The Patriots have the New York Jets next on the docket and it’ll be a much easier day for Mac Jones and company.

Patriots fans react to roller-coaster overtime loss against Cowboys

The New England Patriots are much better than what the 2-4 record says.

Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots sit at 2-4 following a heartbreaking 35-29 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6.

This is a team that lost three extremely tight games in the final moments.

Mac Jones finished the night throwing 15 of 21 for 229 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Damien Harris carried the ball 18 times for 101 yards and a touchdown while Rhamondre Stevenson had 62 total yards and a rushing touchdown.

New England’s defense only allowed three total points on the Cowboys’ final three drives of the first half, while carrying that momentum into the second half. It all came down to CeeDee Lamb’s game-winning touchdown in overtime that pushed the Cowboys to a 5-1 record.

Here’s how Patriots fans felt about it.
