South Carolina adds 2 more recruits to class of 2024

The Gamecocks made up some ground today.

South Carolina got off to a hot start in the 2024 recruiting cycle but has since faded in favor of Michigan, Georgia and Ohio State, who currently hold the top three spots in the composite recruiting rankings for this cycle.

The Gamecocks made up some ground today, though, as two different 2024 recruits announced their commitments to South Carolina on Wednesday:

West Florence (SC) four-star S Kelvin Hunter

Hunter (5-foot-11, 179 pounds) is ranked No. 17 among safeties in his class and No. 4 overall in the state going by On3’s rankings. He had offers from at least eight other programs, including Coastal Carolina, Charlotte and Michigan.

Charles Herbert Flowers (Md.) three-star OT Mike Williams

The other prospect coming on board is Williams (6-foot-6, 325 pounds), who ranks No. 91 at his position and No. 35 overall in the state, according to On3. Williams also had offers from 16 other programs.

Asked why he picked South Carolina, Williams credited offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley for his approach during his recruitment, per 247Sports.

“We weren’t even talking about ball. We were talking about life. He just told me I had to make the best decision for me… He said if I didn’t want to go here, he named another SEC college he wanted me to go to because he said it would be a good fit for me. He said I would be a great fit at South Carolina, and that (other) SEC program. He gave me the real. He wasn’t a car salesman. He wasn’t trying to stack up the offensive line room.”

Speaking of the offensive line room, the Gamecocks now have four offensive line commits in this class and nine total. They rank No. 7 in the nation.

Four-star safety Kelvin Hunter puts Auburn in top 5

The Tigers will be battling Michigan, South Carolina, App State, and Virginia Tech for Hunter.

Four-star safety [autotag]Kelvin Hunter[/autotag] announced his top five schools Saturday and the Auburn Tigers made the cut.

They will be battling South Carolina, Michigan, Virginia Tech, and App State for the Florence, South Carolina, native.

It will be a tough task for the Tigers to pull him away from in-state Gamecocks. Three writers for 247Sports have crystal balled him to the Gamecocks and he has visited there more than anywhere else. However, the Tigers have arguably their top recruiter in secondary and safeties coach [autotag]Zac Etheridge[/autotag] leading the charge.

Hunter is the No. 307 overall player and No. 27 safety in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 6 player from South Carolina.

The 5-11, 181-pounder has not yet visited the Plains but with them making their top five a visit seems likely. He played multiple positions for West Florence High School and constantly his presence felt.

He made 103 tackles, 19.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, picked off one pass, broke up six passes, and forced four fumbles. He also blocked six kicks on special teams.

The Tigers are building an impressive defensive back class in the 2024 recruiting cycle with commitments from four-star cornerbacks [autotag]Jayden Lewis[/autotag] and [autotag]A’Mon Lane[/autotag]. Both of whom were recruited by Etheridge.

Top Palmetto State DB: Receiving Clemson offer ‘would be accomplishing a childhood dream’

One of the Palmetto State’s top-ranked prospects in the class of 2024, who is drawing interest from Clemson, returned to Tiger Town for camp this summer.

West Florence High School (Florence, S.C.) safety Kelvin Hunter participated in the first day of the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 1.

It marked the 6-foot-1, 185-pound rising junior’s first time camping at Clemson.

“I had a great experience learning from all the coaches that were there,” he told The Clemson Insider.

Hunter, who holds a half-dozen FBS offers, including two SEC offers and an ACC offer, worked out at the strong safety position and heard positive things from Clemson’s staff regarding his camp performance.

“All the feedback was good,” he said. “They were just helping improve my technique.”

The Tigers expressed their interest in Hunter, the No. 5 prospect in the state of South Carolina for the 2024 class per Rivals, while letting him know where he stands with them early in the recruiting process.

“They told me that they are interested in me, but as of right now we are just building relationships,” Hunter said. “But they said they don’t usually offer until my senior year, so in the meanwhile just keep grinding and working.”

The fact that Hunter is on Clemson’s recruiting radar means a lot to him and serves as proof of the fruit of his labor.

“It feels good,” he said of the Tigers’ interest in him, “and it shows that my hard work is paying off and that I’m actually getting exposure to different colleges.”

South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Charlotte have all offered Hunter, who said “there isn’t any school sticking out to me yet.”

A future offer from the powerhouse, Palmetto State program Clemson would obviously be a big deal for Hunter, should the in-state standout earn that offer down the road.

“A Clemson offer would mean a lot,” he said. “I would be accomplishing a childhood dream and also it would boost my recruitment.”

Hunter, who also visited Clemson for the Florida State game last October, spoke about what appeals to him the most about Dabo Swinney’s program.

“What stands out to me is they have a winning culture already set up there,” he said, “so you know what to expect when you go there.”

In-state DB drawing Clemson interest, plans to compete at Swinney Camp

This in-state defensive back remains on Clemson’s recruiting radar and continues to draw interest from the Tigers.

West Florence High School (Florence, S.C.) safety Kelvin Hunter – the No. 6 prospect in the Palmetto State for the 2024 class, per 247Sports – was recently in touch with Clemson.

The Tigers want to take a closer look at the 6-foot-1, 185-pound rising junior this spring and summer.

“I recently talked to them a couple weeks ago,” Hunter told The Clemson Insider this week, “and they were just saying they are going to come to our spring practice and they wanted me to get down there for a camp (in June).”

Hunter, who holds several FBS scholarship offers, will work out for Clemson’s staff next month as he plans to compete at the first session of the Dabo Swinney Football Camp on June 1.

“I’m just ready to show the coaches that I’m very versatile and that I can cover just as well as I can play the run,” he said, “because one thing they were wanting to see from me was being able to cover.”

The fact that Clemson is interested in Hunter, and he’s being looked at by one of college football’s premier programs, means a lot to him and serves as motivation for him as well.

“It feels great that one of the top schools in the nation recognizes my talent … it reminds me to keep working and to stay humble,” he said.

Hunter had a chance to check out the Tigers in person for the first time last fall when he made an unofficial visit to Death Valley for the Florida State game on Oct. 30.

“I would have to say the atmosphere there was great and the fans were great,” he said, reflecting on the experience.

Virginia Tech handed Hunter his latest offer this week, joining South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Charlotte on his offer list.

Adding an offer from Clemson in the future would certainly be a big deal for Hunter – for multiple reasons.

“My impression of Clemson is they are a very respected program for their sports team and also for education,” he said, “and it (an offer) would mean a lot because I grew up watching Clemson, and them offering me would be big to me because if I was to decide to go there, I could one day be playing for a national championship, but not only that it would be even better for my family and my hometown.”

Promising Palmetto State DB reflects on ‘great experience’ at Clemson

A promising Palmetto State defensive back is drawing early interest from Clemson and attended a game at Death Valley earlier this season.

West Florence High School (Florence, S.C.) 2024 safety Kelvin Hunter was on campus Oct. 30 to take in the Tigers’ 30-20 win over Florida State.

“I enjoyed it,” Hunter said to The Clemson Insider, looking back on the unofficial game-day visit. “I got to meet some of the coaches, and the atmosphere and the fans were great, and the game. It was just a great experience.”

One of the most memorable parts of the visit experience for Hunter – a 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore – took place after Dabo Swinney’s team defeated the Seminoles.

“One thing that stands out to me was at the end of the game, the recruits got to go into the locker room and see the players celebrate and hear Coach Swinney talk to the team,” Hunter said.

Another highlight of the visit for Hunter was getting to spend time with legendary Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, now an offensive player development coach on Swinney’s staff.

“I got to meet Tajh Boyd, and we were just talking about how my recruitment is going, and he told me about how his went and how he ended up back at Clemson,” Hunter said. “It was great. I grew up watching him, so it was great to finally meet him.”

Hunter was invited to the Clemson-FSU game by Tigers assistant coach Tyler Grisham, who recently stopped by Hunter’s school to check up on him and speak with his coaches.

The interest from Clemson and fact Grisham took time to pay Hunter a visit means a lot to him.

“It feels good to know that I’m being noticed and that I have the talent to be there,” he said.

Hunter holds offers from South Carolina and Charlotte, while schools such as North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and East Carolina are showing interest, along with Clemson.

An offer from the Tigers in the future, should Hunter receive one, would certainly be significant for the standout in-state recruit.

“To get an offer from them would be great,” he said, “to know that my hard work is paying off and to keep working.”

Asked what stands out most to him about Clemson’s football program, Hunter said, “I would have to say the coaching and the national championships.”

Hunter also made an unofficial visit to South Carolina during the season.

As a sophomore this season, he registered 21 solo tackles, 13 assists, 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, two fumble recoveries, a pass breakup and a defensive touchdown.
