Kelly Oubre Jr. picks new jersey number with the Golden State Warriors

After officially joining the Golden State Warriors on a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kelly Oubre Jr. will don a new number when he suits up in the Bay Area.

After officially joining the Golden State Warriors on a trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kelly Oubre Jr.’s next step with his new team is finding a jersey number.

Last season, Oubre Jr. laced up in the No. 3 jersey for the Phoenix Suns. With No. 3 claimed by Jordan Poole, the newest member of the Warriors is going back to his roots.

With a post on his Instagram, Oubre Jr. shared a photo of his locker with the No. 12 featuring in the picture. In the caption, the 6-foot-7 wing had “12 Back” listed. During his start in the NBA, Oubre Jr. wore No. 12 with the Washington Wizards. Before his time in the NBA, Oubre Jr. also wore No. 12 at the college level with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Prior to recently waived point guard Ky Bowman wearing No. 12 in his rookie season with the Warriors, Andrew Bogut wore the number during his tenure in the Bay Area. While rooming the frontcourt from 2013-2019, the former No. 1 overall pick out of Utah wore the jersey.

Along with Bogut and Bowman, other members of the Warriors to wear No. 12 are Bimbo Coles, Mike Gale and Ish Smith.

Two of Golden State’s draft picks have also landed on their new jersey numbers. No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman is slated to wear No. 33 and second-round pick Nico Mannion will wear No. 2.

Oubre Jr., Wiseman and Mannion will have the first opportunity to suit up in their new threads when the Warriors open the 2020-21 season at the end of December.

The Chris Paul trade sprouted different deals, including Kelly Oubre to the Warriors and Rubio to the Timberwolves. See OKC’s full return.

The Kelly Oubre trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Golden State Warriors was finalized Sunday, and Jalen Lecque was reportedly traded to the Indiana Pacers that same evening, which means the Thunder are likely done moving pieces directly acquired from the Phoenix Suns in the Chris Paul trade for the foreseeable future.

The Oubre trade, which was originally reported to be the wing in exchange for a top-20 protected first-round 2021 pick, also includes a 2021 second-round draft pick of the Denver Nuggets that the Warriors owned.

In total, the Thunder traded Paul and wing Abdel Nader to the Phoenix Suns, along with some other pieces to other teams that we will get into below, in exchange for:

  • 2020 No. 17 pick from Minnesota, used on Aleksej Pokusevski
  • 2021 top-20 protected Warriors first-round pick
  • 2021 Nuggets second-round pick via Warriors
  • Ty Jerome
  • T.J. Leaf
  • Trevor Ariza
  • Justin Jackson
  • Future Pacers second-round draft pick
  • Draft compensation from the Detroit Pistons and/or Dallas Mavericks. The Daily Thunder reported that this could mean two second-round picks.

This also cost the team pick No. 25 and No. 28 in the 2020 draft, the latter of which came from the Dennis Schroder trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. Both picks went to the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with Rubio, for the rights to Pokusevski.

Where did Ariza, Jackson and the other draft compensation come from? The Thunder got James Johnson from the Timberwolves as part of the Rubio trade, and then sent him to Dallas as part of a three-way trade.

Lecque was reportedly traded to the Indiana Pacers for T.J. Leaf and a future Indiana Pacers second-round draft pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Extending it out a year, trading Russell Westbrook to the Rockets landed them two first-round pick swaps, four first-round picks, multiple second-round picks and four players.

Trevor Ariza could certainly be moved one more time. Justin Jackson could conceivably be as well, but it looks like the pieces from this deal are getting set. Every player directly acquired in the Paul trade has found his new home.

Now, it’s up to general manager Sam Presti and his staff to make sure they get those draft picks right.

Thunder, Warriors trade of Kelly Oubre finalized; includes 2 draft picks

Kelly Oubre has officially been traded to the Golden State Warriors. The Oklahoma City Thunder got back a first- and second-round pick.

[jwplayer b5UKTokG-z6KDnl0B]

Early reports showed the Oklahoma City Thunder were set to get a first-round pick from the Golden State Warriors for Kelly Oubre Jr.

The Thunder stretched that into two picks. Oklahoma City and Golden State finalized the trade Sunday, and the Thunder will receive a first-round pick from the Warriors and a Denver Nuggets second-round pick that belonged to the Warriors in exchange for the wing.

The first-round pick, according to Anthony Slater, is top-20 protected.

Oklahoma City has extended this Chris Paul trade out over a full week. After acquiring Oubre, Ricky Rubio, Ty Jerome and Jalen Lecque from the Phoenix Suns for the star guard and Abdel Nader, the Thunder only have Jerome and Lecque left. Oubre and Rubio have been flipped to teams looking to make a playoff chase, largely for more draft capital.

The tank continues for the Thunder, who are flushed with draft assets over the upcoming half-decade.

The Warriors could pay an absurdly expensive tax bill after reported Kelly Oubre Jr. trade

WOW.

The Golden State Warriors will lose Klay Thompson to an Achilles tear for the 2020-21 season, absolutely the worst news for the star guard and the franchise after he missed all of last year with a torn ACL.

But they have a Plan B as the Dubs try to contend again with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and No. 2 overall pick in the draft James Wiseman: per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Warriors are close to dealing for talented wing Kelly Oubre Jr. in a trade with Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for — what else? — a first-rounder in 2021.

How can a team with so many huge salaries deal for Oubre? They have a trade exception from their trade of Andre Iguodala that was reportedly set to expire on Nov. 23.

But that means they’re going to pay more in luxury tax. And when I say more, I mean A LOT MORE:

That is one expensive transaction.

Oubre is a terrific two-way wing who can defend and score, so it’s a great get for a team that needs both those things without Thompson. Is it worth THAT much money? I guess if ownership feels like it can afford it, then … sure?

Report: Thunder to add another 1st-round pick, trade Kelly Oubre to Warriors

The Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly finalizing a Kelly Oubre Jr. trade to the Warriors in exchange for yet another first-round pick.

Another trade, another first-round pick coming Sam Presti’s way.

The Oklahoma City Thunder traded Kelly Oubre Jr. to the Golden State Warriors for a first-round pick that is top-20 protected, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. If Golden State ends up in the top 20, it will convert to two second rounders.

Wojnarowski and Anthony Slater, who confirmed the trade, did not specify if any Warriors players would be involved.

As of now, the Thunder’s return for Chris Paul and Abdel Nader has turned into Aleksej Pokusevski, a 2021 first-round Warriors pick, a 2022 first-round Suns pick, James Johnson, Ty Jerome and Jalen Lecque.

Oklahoma City gets off Oubre’s $14.4 million salary. The Warriors used the Andre Iguodala trade exception to complete this deal, so they did not have to send any money back to the Thunder to complete the trade.

Additionally, the Thunder have created a $14.4 million trade exception, according to Bobby Marks. They will be able to use that to match salary in a trade this season.

Oubre, 24 years old, is an explosive wing who gets to the rim and dunks with power. He can hit 3s with moderate reliability and has a personality that will add to the culture of Golden State as he helps replace the loss of Klay Thompson, who is believed to have suffered an Achilles injury.

Oubre averaged 18.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season for the Phoenix Suns.

Oklahoma City now owns three first-round picks next year. The organization has its own, Golden State’s protected pick, the Miami Heat’s unprotected pick and has the right to swap draft picks with the Houston Rockets.

The Warriors’ luxury tax figure may be startling. According to Bobby Marks, Oubre’s salary would increase the tax bill by $68 million put them at a $134 million figure in luxury taxes alone.

Report: Thunder, Warriors discussing Kelly Oubre Jr. trade

Kelly Oubre Jr. could be headed to the Golden State Warriors following the Chris Paul trade that sent him from the Suns to the Thunder.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are continuing to shift assets they accumulated in prior trades.

They are in “serious talks” to move wing Kelly Oubre Jr. to the Golden State Warriors, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Golden State is using its trade exception acquired in the Andre Iguodala deal to make the salary figures work, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, so Oklahoma City does not have to take on salary to match Oubre’s $14.4 million salary.

Because of that, the Thunder could theoretically only acquire draft capital without taking on new player salary.

It is a quick flip for the Thunder, who acquired Oubre on Monday in the Chris Paul trade, which netted them Ricky Rubio, Ty Jerome, Jalen Lecque and a 2022 first-round pick. Rubio has already been traded for draft pick Aleksej Pokusevski and James Johnson.

[lawrence-related id=439066,439035]

Oubre, 24, was an integral piece of the Phoenix Suns last season, averaging 18.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He had at least 25 points in a dozen games and instituted the “Valley Boyz” culture in Phoenix that completely shifted the atmosphere of the organization.

Oubre is adept at driving to the rim and can create his own looks. When he gets to the hoop he can throw it down with power and he is solid enough from 3 that defenders can’t leave him open. These skills will take some of the load off Steph Curry, who will need more help with Klay Thompson having reportedly suffered an Achilles injury.

With only one year left on his contract, Oubre does not fit the Thunder’s timeline in a way that ownership sees viable to offer him a long-term contract next offseason that will likely be in the $15-$20 million range.

The Warriors’ luxury tax figure may be startling. According to Bobby Marks, Oubre’s salary would increase the tax bill by $68 million put them at a $134 million figure in luxury taxes alone.

Report: Oklahoma City Thunder in ‘serious talks’ to trade Kelly Oubre Jr. to Golden State Warriors

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Oklahoma City Thunder are in “serious talks” to move Kelly Oubre Jr. to the Warriors.

After announcing Klay Thompson will miss the entire 2020-21 season, the Golden State Warriors have turned their attention to the trade market.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors are in “serious talks” with the Oklahoma City Thunder to acquire Kelly Oubre Jr.

Via @ShamsChrania on Twitter:

In 2019-20, Oubre averaged 18.7 points on 45.2% shooting from the field with 6.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals per contest for the Phoenix Suns.

On Monday, the former 2015 first-round pick was traded by the Suns to the Oklahoma City Thunder as a piece in the Chris Paul blockbuster move.

Oubre’s $14.4 million salary can fit under Golden State’s $17.2 million trade exception they acquired in the Andre Iguodala trade with the Memphis Grizzlies last season.

It’s still unclear what type of compensation the Warriors will be sending to the Thunder to acquire the Kansas Jayhawks product.

The Athletic grades Chris Paul ‘A’ for Thunder, ‘A-‘ for Suns

The Athletic likes the Oklahoma City Thunder’s return in the Chris Paul deal and thinks the Phoenix Suns made a calculated risk.

[jwplayer XoaEjpNJ-z6KDnl0B]

The Athletic’s Zach Harper knows the Phoenix Suns will improve with Chris Paul, but that doesn’t mean he counts them the winners of the blockbuster trade.

After Oklahoma City Thunder shipped Paul and Abdel Nader to Phoenix for Kelly Oubre Jr., Ricky Rubio, Ty Jerome, Jalen Lecque and a protected 2022 first-round pick, Harper said the Thunder got the slightly better end of the deal.

He gave the Thunder an ‘A’ grade for the trade.

The Suns got an ‘A-.’

Harper wrote:

“There is a lot to love about this trade for the Thunder. Not only do they save money and bring in such intriguing young players as Ty Jerome and Jalen Lecque, but also they have veterans they can flip once again.”

Those veterans may not immediately be traded, Harper said. He speculated there’s a good chance Rubio plays for the Thunder this season before being traded in the 2021 offseason or at the 2022 deadline.

Oubre, meanwhile, has a contract that expires in 2021, so he would have to be traded this offseason or coming season — unless the Thunder want to keep him for the rebuild.

“If [Sam Presti] decides to keep Oubre and try to re-sign him, he just adds to the long-term length and athleticism of wings the Thunder have.”

Harper wrote Jerome could be “an excellent third guard off the bench” and that Lecque’s athleticism makes him a player worth watching.

“He, in fact, might be the most athletic guy on the Thunder, which is something considering they have Terrance Ferguson and Hamidou Diallo on the squad. They’ll throw him into the development program and see what they can churn out with his skill set.”

Harper called the 2022 draft pick “a bit of a gamble” considering the Suns are officially in win-now mode and, in an ideal world for Phoenix, would have a pick in the 20s.

That pick may end up not being a game changer, but it’s not the roll of the dice that trading for Paul on his contract is.

Harper called it “a huge risk for the Suns” before acknowledging that “it’s a calculated risk.” With Paul, Phoenix should make the playoffs and Booker should be able to make an All-NBA team. Yet with Paul’s age, contract and injury history, Harper was tentative in calling it an overwhelming victory for the Suns.

Rubio, Oubre, more: Analyzing the Thunder’s return from the Suns for Chris Paul

The Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly trading Chris Paul to the Phoenix Suns for Ricky Rubio, Kelly Oubre and others. Take a look at the return here.

[jwplayer XoaEjpNJ-z6KDnl0B]

The Oklahoma City Thunder are going through yet another massive roster shift this offseason.

Chris Paul and Abdel Nader will be traded to the Phoenix Suns for point guard Ricky Rubio, wing Kelly Oubre, second-year guard Ty Jerome, second-year guard Jalen Lecque and a 2022 first-round draft pick with protections, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The Thunder are unlikely to go the full season with Rubio and Oubre, as both can be used as trade pieces on short contracts, but let’s take a look at the newcomers and see what they can offer to their new team.

Report: Thunder trade Chris Paul to Suns for Rubio, Oubre, draft pick

Chris Paul has been traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Phoenix Suns for Ricky Rubio, Kelly Oubre and a future draft pick.

After one year in Oklahoma City, star point guard Chris Paul is on the move.

The All-Star has been traded to the Phoenix Suns for wing Kelly Oubre, point guard Ricky Rubio, second-year guards Ty Jerome and Jalen Lecque, and a 2022 first-round draft pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania.

Oklahoma City is also sending Abdel Nader in the deal.

Paul returned to All-NBA form with the Thunder, leading a young group to the playoffs and tying for the fourth-best record in the Western Conference.

In pushing the team to unexpected heights, he regained trade value despite having more than $85 million attached to the next two years of his contract.

In return, the Thunder are getting two young guards, a pair of players who have trade value and a protected future first-round pick.

Rubio was an excellent presence for the Suns this season, serving a role similar to Paul, though his play was at a lower level. He provided the young Phoenix team with an experienced playmaker whose feel for the game and calming demeanor helped the team win more games than they had since 2015, even with the shortened season.

With two years left on his contract for a little less than $35 million, Rubio can fetch a return from a team in need of veteran guard leadership.

Oubre is a more interesting piece. He heightened his game to a new level last year, averaging 18.7 points and increasing his 3-point percentage to 35%. He can create his own looks and drives to the lane well, and was surprisingly clutch from deep late in close games.

He turns 25 in December. His talent level on an expiring deal can likely net the Thunder another draft pick or young player on a longer deal, or Oklahoma City could even look at him as a long-term wing option to pair with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort and Darius Bazley.

Jerome was a first-round pick last year whose rights were traded from the Boston Celtics to the Phoenix Suns on draft night. The now-23-year-old did not get much playing time but will have less backcourt competition on the Thunder.

Lecque spent most of last season in the G League. He’s a developmental project known for his dunking ability.

The draft pick is protected 1-12 in 2022, 1-10 in 2023, 1-8 in 2024 and unprotected in 2025, according to Charania.
