Knicks vs. Sixers: Former Warrior Kelly Oubre Jr. eliminated with loss in Game 6

Oubre Jr. tallied 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field during the Sixers’ Game 6 loss to the Knicks.

Shortly after Kevin Durant’s season came to an end with a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, another former member of the Golden State Warriors has been eliminated from the postseason.

With another heroic performance from Jalen Brunson, the New York Knicks advanced to the second round of the playoffs, while ending the Philadelphia 76ers’ run in six games.

Kelly Oubre Jr. is the latest former member of the Warriors to hit the offseason early. The former Warrior-turned-76ers wing tallied 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds, a steal, a block, and an assist in 43 minutes. Oubre Jr. also knocked down a trip of 3-pointers against the Knicks on Thursday night. Oubre Jr. trailed only Buddy Hield in the +/- category with +8.

Via @NBA on Twitter:

In six games against the Knicks, Oubre Jr. averaged 13.1 points in round one of the postseason.

Yet, the Knicks still had no answer for Brunson. The Villanova product posted 41 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the floor to go along with 12 assists and three rebounds in 44 minutes. Brunson tallied 39 or more points in four straight games for the Knicks.

The Knicks will move on to face the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the playoffs.

Kelly Oubre used a quirky dog metaphor to describe playing in 76ers OT thriller vs. Knicks

Kelly Oubre Jr. said WHAT?

The Philadelphia 76ers pulled out one of the most improbable playoff wins in recent memory. With a 46-point night, Tyrese Maxey snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and spoiled the Knicks’ dreams of closing out the series. However, Kelly Oubre Jr. might have dropped the wildest one-liner to describe what it’s like to pull out that gritty win.

Kelly Oubre Jr. missed a shootaround Tuesday ahead of the Sixers’ matchup with the Knicks due to illness. However, shortly before tip-off, he was listed as probable and ultimately gave it a go. Philadelphia needed everything that Oubre could give.

In a game that went into overtime because of a sick Tyrese Maxey logo 3-point shot, Oubre gutted it out and played 39 minutes while still technically ill. How did that feel? Kelly says he felt like “dog water” afterward. No, really. He actually said that.

Here’s what Oubre shared with the media:

“I feel like dog water right now, but even dogs drink it. I feel good. I’ve just been drinking a lot of water.”

Jimmy Butler directed a stern comment at 76ers’ Kelly Oubre Jr. after sustaining injury during play-in game

Jimmy Butler doesn’t sound too thrilled about his injury.

After he got diagnosed with an MCL sprain on Thursday that will sideline him for the foreseeable future, Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler sent someone a pretty blunt message on Instagram.

Butler got tangled up with Philadelphia 76ers forward/guard Kelly Oubre Jr. during Wednesday night’s play-in game, as Oubre landed awkwardly on Butler’s knee while trying to block the latter’s shot attempt.

Well, Butler either wanted to troll or intimidate Oubre after the incident left him injured, tagging the 76ers standout on Instagram with the comment “we throwing hands” on a post about Butler’s ailment.

That’s certainly one way to respond.

We’re not sure if Butler is just messing with Oubre, or if he’s actually expressing a real grievance over his injury. Either way, this only adds to a building rivalry between the Heat and 76ers in the Eastern Conference.

It’s hard to tell for sure, but the comment in and of itself is fascinating.

Lip-readers think Kelly Oubre called referees NSFW names over a potential missed call

Kelly Oubre let the referees know exactly how he felt.

At the end of Wednesday night’s Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers game, Sixers guard Kelly Oubre let his feelings be known to the officiating crew.

With Philly down a point to Los Angeles with just a couple of seconds left, Oubre put up a last-second shot for the win but was denied at the point of release. However, Oubre and 76ers coach Nick Nurse felt that the guard was fouled on the attempt and proceeded to let the referees know about it.

If Oubre had been fouled, it would’ve sent him to the free-throw line to potentially send the game to overtime or win it outright. However, no foul was called, and the Clippers walked away with the 108-107 win.

Well, Oubre in particular seemingly had some salty language for the refs for potentially missing a huge call, appearing to call them all [expletives] to their faces, one by one.

Whew, this is quite a way to let your feelings be known if you’re Oubre.

While it’s hard to tell if this really was a foul, it’s easy to see that it infuriated Oubre to the point of likely getting penalized for his remarks.

Tyrese Maxey beautifully dedicated 50-point game to Kelly Oubre after scary car accident

Oubre was struck by a car and sustained a fractured rib as well as other injuries.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey had a career-high 50 points during a victory over the Pacers on Sunday night.

The rising star continued his offensive ascension with an efficient outing, shooting 20-of-32 from the field and 7-of-11 from beyond the arc. But according to Maxey, the performance had nothing to do with him.

He said that the outing had everything to do with Kelly Oubre, his 76ers teammate who was struck by a vehicle while walking near his residence in Philadelphia on Friday.

Oubre sustained a fractured rib and other injuries after he was struck. The car fled the scene and local authorities are investigating the incident.

Here is what he said during his on-court walk-off interview:

“Man, this had nothing to do with me. This is all Kelly Oubre, man. We’re praying for him and love my dog, man. I just met him but I love him. I hope he gets better soon.”

But that wasn’t it from Maxey when discussing his teammate.

During his postgame press conference, Maxey continued to show love to Oubre. He said:

“It’s really hard, honestly. When I got the news, I thought it wasn’t real. I didn’t think it was real. But I shot him a text as soon as possible, as soon as I could. It hurts, man. That’s sad, man. It’s a sad deal. … We just want to show our love to him, tell him we love him. Shout out to K.O., man. He’s a fighter, so we know he’ll be okay.”

Meanwhile, 76ers head coach Nick Nurse presented Maxey with the game ball for his stellar showing against Indiana. Maxey immediately made due to his promise to show love to Oubre.

He and his teammates all recorded a thoughtful message to send to Oubre.

According to Nurse, the 76ers forward is out of the hospital and “resting” back at his home.

Why Kelly Oubre to the Celtics could make sense for both sides

As the offseason drags on and cap space dries up, a one season prove-it deal is looking like it might actually be on the table.

Would it make sense for the Boston Celtics to pursue the services of former Charlotte Hornets forward Kelly Oubre? According to one Celtics analyst, it very well could. According to Sports Illustrated’s Bobby Krivitsky, Tsunami Papi (as he is called for a nickname) could potentially be a valuable asset to the Celtics if he accepts a reduced role within the team.

“If Mazzulla’s on board with how he’d fit … Boston could sign the eight-year veteran for the minimum or offer a bit more while staying under the second apron, utilizing a chunk of the $5 million taxpayer mid-level exception,” posits Kritvitsky (h/t Heavy’s Adam Taylor).

“While not the cleanest fit in Mazzulla’s offense, if he’s open to the role he’d have off the bench in Boston, as a productive and versatile two-way forward, Oubre could prove a helpful addition to the Celtics’ pursuit of Banner 18,” wrote the SI analyst.

We have had doubts about such a possibility unfolding in a way that makes sense for all parties, but as the offseason drags on and cap space dries up, a one season prove-it deal is looking like it might actually be on the table should both sides feel the same.

Can the Boston Celtics sign some key veterans for their open roster spots?

With the available cap space for the NBA’s looming 2023-24 season nearly gone, the remaining players still unsigned to a contract who can actually help a team will have to start considering one-year, prove-it deals

With the available cap space for the NBA’s looming 2023-24 season nearly gone, the remaining players still unsigned to a contract who can actually help a team will have to start considering one-year, prove-it deals if they want to be in the league next season.

This could very well play into the Boston Celtics’ hands given the team is one of several with open roster spots but little in the way of money to spend for the players who will fill them. What they can offer is a high-profile gig on a club likely to contend for a title, the sort of setting that actually can jump-start a stalled career in the Association.

Would Kelly Oubre or Christian Wood make sense in such a context? And what’s going on with PJ Washington and the Charlotte Hornets? Is there a way Boston might get involved with a player no one expects them to?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast took a quick look at the remaining free agent market on a recent episode; check the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about it.

Who are the top remaining options for the Boston Celtics in free agency?

Boston needs to find players willing to take a pay cut for a chance to compete for a championship.

The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement was designed to punish high-spending clubs such as the Boston Celtics. The idea is to make it fairer for the other teams to acquire top-shelf talent. As a result, to fill out remaining roster spots, Boston needs to find players willing to take a pay cut for a chance to compete for a championship.

With the pool of free agents worth signing getting more shallow by the hour, the Celtics need to look at players such as Hamidou Diallo, Kelly Oubre, Christian Wood, Terence Ross, JaMychael Green and T.J. Warren in the hopes of finding the right role player able to help them win some games on the cheap.

To talk over how that might go down in practice, the hosts of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast recently convened to discuss Boston’s free agency options.

With another open roster spot, who should the Boston Celtics pursue to fill it?

In their search for a suitable player, some names have emerged as potential targets.

The Boston Celtics recently waived Justin Champagnie, leaving an open roster spot they need to fill. The Celtics have 13 players under contract and are required to carry 14. So, the Celtics are looking for potential free agent signings to fill at least one spot. They have limited salary cap space, which may restrict their options, but they offer the opportunity to play for a competitive team that has a chance of making a deep playoff run.

Some names have emerged as potential targets. A few of the more interesting are former Charlotte Hornets forward Kelly Oubre, offensive-oriented big man Christian Wood, veteran point guard Ish Smith and defensive specialist Hamidou Diallo.

The host of the “Locked On Celtics” podcast, John Karalis, and guest Tom Westerholm of Boston.com linked up to talk all of the above in the video embedded below.

Check it out for yourself to see where they came down on who Boston ought to be pursuing.

Could Boston add Christian Wood or Kelly Oubre on minimums? Two prominent NBA analysts float the idea

It is not uncommon for players to elect to sign on a discounted deal for the possibility of a role well beyond what their salaries would otherwise suggest.

As the available cap space around the NBA begins to dry up several days after the start of the league’s 2023 free agency period, players finding themselves on the wrong end of the Association’s annual fiscal version of the game of musical chairs will have to find the best possible fit for their skillset on a contract often much smaller than they were initially hoping.

In such scenarios, it is not uncommon for players to elect to sign on a discounted deal for the possibility of a role well beyond what their salaries would otherwise suggest, which ought to catch the eye of Boston Celtics fans.

And with a number of quality free agents looking at minimum deals or perhaps part of a midlevel exception, NBA analysts have been trying to project where some of the bigger remaining names might go.
