Manager reflects on Keith Lee’s awe-inspiring transition from Bellator fighter to viral food critic

From Bellator fighter to viral sensation, Keith Lee is changing lives through his food reviews.

[autotag]Keith Lee[/autotag] wasn’t exactly a household name when he was fighting under the Bellator banner.

During his brief run with the promotion that began in 2020, Lee did have some buzz around him as the younger brother of former UFC interim lightweight title challenger Kevin Lee. However, his popularity is nowhere near what it is today. Lee’s videos critiquing food on social media propelled him to viral stardom.

What started as cooking tutorials in his own home became reviews of local small restaurants. Now, after amassing millions of views and followers, the “Keith Lee and Family Food Tour” has the former Bellator fighter traveling across the country offering genuine, unfiltered reviews of various food spots.

His words have become an incredibly powerful positive force, too. A glowing review from Lee will cause an immediate flood of traffic, creating lines around the building for a restaurant that would otherwise only see a handful of customers per day – a phenomenon known as “the Keith Lee effect.” His fight manager, SuckerPunch Entertainment’s Brian Butler, is amazed at his client’s journey.

“I’m watching him in awe just like everybody else,” Butler said. “It’s incredible to see the actual impact that he has. Did you see the thing that he did for the Korean BBQ family in Vegas? A big line because I guess the father or the owner just recently passed away and he wanted everybody to show up and show love.

“I’ve never seen a social media star with more influence – and when I say influence, I don’t mean followers. I mean like influence, as actually making somebody do something. He does it everywhere he goes, and it’s incredible to see. I’m really happy for him and proud of him for the way that he’s carried himself and the work that he’s doing because it’s really changing lives.”

Aside from offering advice during the occasional conversation, Butler says Lee, 27, is fully in control of his new career path. Lee’s TikTok account has over 15.6 million followers, with each video reaching millions of views with ease.

“He does all the edits himself,” Butler said. “You know, the way he cuts in to his face and cuts out, and all that stuff? That’s all him. All of that is so cleverly produced by him along with his camera presence.

“I told him, I was like, ‘Dude, just do not stop doing this. Whatever you’re posting, I’m watching from start to finish, regardless of what you’re talking about. It’s just because the way you are presenting yourself on camera.’ … I’ve got to go back and find that text message because this was before Keith Lee was Keith Lee. This was when Keith Lee was Bellator fighter Keith Lee and he didn’t really have any followers on TikTok. It’s just awesome to see that he’s just blown up the way that he has.”

With fighting in his rear-view, Butler isn’t quite sure if he’s completely done with combat sports. Lee has 13 professional fights under his belt with a career record of 8-5. His last outing was a split decision win over Jeremiah Labiano at Urijah Faber’s AI Combat 5 in September 2022. If that was his final fight, Butler is more than happy to see his client succeed in other avenues.

“We’ll see. He’s busy and happy doing what he’s doing now, but if he wants to call me and say he wanted to fight, sky’s the limit,” Butler said. “That would be as big as any Jake Paul fight out there if he came back and fought. I think he’s got a fanbase that is actually more mainstream.

“… But does he need to? I’m completely happy and proud of him not fighting. He’s providing for his family, he’s making an incredible leaving. Why? Unless, which he does, have the fighter spirit inside of him, and he just wants to compete, then I’m all for it. But definitely doesn’t need to do it for a paycheck. He doesn’t need it.”

Alas, we have reached the end of a roller coaster year for AEW with the promotion’s final pay-per-view offering, World’s End.

Will AEW end close out 2023 with a bang, or will it stumble to the year’s finish line?

Let’s run through the show match-by-match and offer some predictions.

AEW Collision results 12/23/23: Eddie Kingston, back from the brink

Also on AEW Collision, Thunder Rosa made a triumphant return from a long injury absence.

A quick confession: Pro wrestling isn’t part of my holiday traditions. But there’s no reason it couldn’t be, especially since tonight’s AEW Collision is coming to us so close to Christmas.

This is no throwaway show, either, thanks in large part to its status as the final night of Blue League competition in the AEW Continental Classic. Andrade El Idolo and Bryan Danielson are in the best positions to advance, since they enter the night with nine points each. But everyone else except Daniel Garcia is still mathematically alive, so these three matches should be dynamite. No pun intended.

We’re also only a week away from Worlds End, so there should be more parts of that card falling into place as well. Let’s see what this night brings, and if we don’t speak again before then, Merry Christmas!

AEW Collision results from San Antonio:

  • Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli go to a time limit draw in their Continental Classic Blue League match; Danielson advances to the Blue League final thanks to getting to 10 points
  • A highlight package of Gold League matches from this week is aired, interspersed with some of the post-match promos cut by Jay White, Jon Moxley and Swerve Strickland

AEW Collision results 12/16/23: Eddie Kingston, Claudio Castagnoli stay alive

Also on AEW Collision, Thunder Rosa made her return to form a surprising alliance.

We’re getting down to the nitty gritty in the Continental Classic tonight on AEW Collision. For the Blue League, especially, several competitors are in must-win situations, particularly Eddie Kingston.

Maybe he wouldn’t be under so much pressure if he wouldn’t have put both of his titles up for grabs in this tournament, but he did and there’s no going back now. To get them back and become the first ever AEW Continental Champion too, he’s got to go on and win it all.

Kingston made that more difficult for himself by losing his first two round robin matches, but a victory over his archrival Claudio Castagnoli kept him alive. Kingston will need to win against Brody King tonight to still have a chance, and as luck would have it, Castagnoli is in the very same boat against group leader Andrade El Idolo.

All of which is to say that this is an important night in the Continental Classic, and there’s also a title defense by Orange Cassidy, always a good time. Let’s do this.

AEW Collision results 12/9/23: Kenny Omega, Bryan Danielson in action

AEW Collision also saw Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston renew their heated rivalry in the Continental Classic.

AEW Collision has been a little up and down this fall after a certain you know who got bounced from the company. Some shows have been pretty star-studded, while others have felt like Dynamite-lite (hey, that rhymes). Happily, this feels like one of the former even though it’s a pre-recorded show that went down earlier this week in Montreal.

For starters, there’s a tremendous grudge match between Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston, with some high stakes as it’s part of the Continental Classic. Bryan Danielson and Andrade El Idolo will also face off in a tournament match of their own.

And hey, why go to Canada without a match between two guys trying to prove they are the best from the North? Kenny Omega and Ethan Page will do that tonight as well.

We’re assuming you haven’t read any spoilers if you’re reading this, and we haven’t either, so let’s see what this night holds on TNT.

AEW Collision results 12/2/23: Bryan Danielson leaves Eddie Kingston down bad

Some intriguing matches also got set up for Dynamite and Final Battle on AEW Collision this week.

Saturday night’s alright for fighting, and tonight, it’s more than alright for fighting in a tournament. The Blue League of the Continental Classic takes center stage tonight on AEW Collision from Erie, Penn.

Most notably, Bryan Danielson makes his debut in the Classic as he’s only recently been cleared to compete. He’s back now, and he can compound the misery of one Eddie Kingston by beating the Mad King tonight.

Maybe Eddie is having some remorse over putting both of his championships up for grabs in this tourney, eh?

Get ready, Erie. Here we go.

AEW Dynamite results 11/8/23: MJF is running out of friends

The good news is MJF is still AEW World Champion. The bad news is the person in the Devil mask plagued him again.

It’s time to see what Daniel Garcia is all about on AEW Dynamite from Portland.

Garcia has had quite the journey during his time in AEW. Originally positioned as a no-nonsense technical wrestler, he did almost a complete 180 by joining the Jericho Appreciation Society. He’s now known even more for his hip-thrusting dance, though his in-ring skills certainly haven’t gone away.

He’s also competed against some of the best the company has to offer, including Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston and Orange Cassidy. Garcia is somehow still only 25 years old, so his best days may very well still be in front of him.

Perhaps this will be one of those days. Garcia has a shot at the AEW World Championship held by MJF, and while it would be shocking indeed for AEW to do a big title change on free TV just 10 days out from a pay-per-view — where it’s already advertised MJF vs. Jay White as a featured bout — stranger things have happened.

White has a hurdle of his own to clear tonight in Portland, where he’ll take on Mark Briscoe, who just recently returned from injury. White’s spot in the Full Gear match is on the line, but unlike MJF, the Switchblade has several buddies to watch his back and ensure he makes it out of Dynamite with that opportunity intact.

(And the title belt in his possession, since he’s been holding onto it even though it still belongs to MJF.)

Plus we’ll see Darby Allin and Sting in tag team action, Swerve Strickland vs. Penta, the in-ring return of Red Velvet, and a talking segment with the Golden Jets, Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho.

AEW Dynamite preview 11/8/23: MJF, Samoa Joe defend their titles (but not against each other)

Tonight’s AEW Dynamite also has Sting, Darby Allin and Swerve Strickland scheduled for matches.

Like the great Yogi Berra once said, it’s getting late early on the road to Full Gear. So tonight’s AEW Dynamite from Portland is going to answer two big questions about who will be holding and competing for certain titles two Saturdays from now at the Kia Forum.

Will the world championship scene change ahead of Full Gear?

Let’s start with the biggest one first. MJF is supposed to be facing Jay White in Inglewood in a title match that subverts the usual champion-challenger dynamic since White has been in physical possession of the AEW World Championship for weeks.

Yet both of them have their spots in that match on the line tonight. White is facing Mark Briscoe, recently returned from injury. Meanwhile, MJF has his belt up for grabs against Daniel Garcia, currently struggling with the whole pro wrestler/sports entertainer thing again.

No one expects either MJF or White to lose, but it’s interesting that these high stakes matches are even taking place with the PPV 10 days away. And hey, if Switchblade loses, he can just refuse to give the title belt back as that’s been working out pretty well for him so far.

Will Samoa Joe vs. Keith Lee steal the show?

It seems like just last week we were complaining about AEW giving Keith Lee nothing interesting to do … because it was. We’re not saying we manifested his ROH World Television Championship shot against Samoa Joe tonight, but it does kind of feel like that.

Even though Joe does not have a title defense scheduled at Full Gear, there’s still time for that. Or maybe Lee actually wins this and becomes a mainstay on ROH for a bit. Either way, we’re looking forward to it.

Will Toni Storm appear only in black and white during her segment?

This is a sillier thing to look forward to, but Tony Schiavone is supposed to have a sitdown interview with Hikaru Shida and “Timeless” Toni Storm before they clash over Shida’s AEW Women’s World Championship at Full Gear, and AEW suggested Storm would only agree to it if she was filmed in black and white.

While her gimmick appears it may be grating on some fans, we still can’t get enough of it, and we can’t wait to see what she might do in the lead-up to Nov. 18.

AEW Collision results 11/4/23: FTR still figuring out friend from foe

AEW Collision did a nice job of loading up the next episode of AEW Dynamite.

What do you do when you have a bunch of tag teams whose subplots all kind of overlap? Throw them into one big eight-man tag main event, which is what’s happening tonight on AEW Collision from Wichita.

FTR is still hot for another shot at Big Bill and Ricky Starks, the duo who beat them for the AEW World Tag Team Championship. Gates of Agony has been making trouble for FTR and other face teams too … an umbrella that now apparently includes La Faccion Ingobernable.

So yes, all four teams are going to be involved in the last match tonight. Will that settle anything? Probably not. But that’s just how you gotta roll sometimes in wrestling.

There’s some other interesting stuff on the card, beginning with the first match that’s wasting exactly zero time to get started.
