Former Rutgers defensive back Keenan Reid on his New York Jets rookie camp experience: I was told to stay ready

Keenan Reid seemed to make an impression at New York Jets rookie minicamp.

For Keenan Reid, last weekend’s rookie minicamp with the New York Jets certainly left an impression. The feeling, the former Rutgers football defensive back said, is one that he thinks is mutual with the NFL team.

In talking about his time with the Jets last week as a rookie minicamp invitee, Reid said is grateful for the opportunity and hopes that there is another opportunity with the NFL in the not-too-distant future. Reid spent the last three seasons at Rutgers as a reserve defensive back. Prior to that, he played at Lincoln University, a Division II program that is a Historically Black College or University.

His path to the NFL is unconventional to say the least, especially since Reid was a reserve defensive back at Rutgers. He made just seven appearances at Rutgers but it was his strong showing at the Pro Day in March that helped catapult him to this opportunity with the Jets.

“My experience with the Jets was great, they are a great organization from top down and carry a great energy to them,” Reid told Rutgers Wire.

“I had a great time training (and) practicing with the team. I was already familiar with many of the staff and the building since I was invited to their local day but overall I did really well in practice and meetings.”

“I spoke to coaches since camp ended and they were impressed with me. At the conclusion of our conversation, I was told specifically to stay ready. I’m currently continuing to train and working with my agent to see what the best opportunity is for me, moving forward.”

At the Rutgers Pro Day in March, Reid was impressive. A 40-inch vertical opened some eyes as did very strong times in the 3-cone shuttle (7.15) and 4.21 time in the 20-yard shuttle.

But it was his straight-line speed that made the Jets take notice. His first run of the 40 saw Reid at a 4.5. Then he clocked in with a 4.41, the fastest of the day for any Rutgers athlete.

The feedback from the Jets about his three days at the team facility, Reid said, was positive.

“They were impressed with me. The coaches spoke about not only how smart I was (and) competed in meetings but were impressed with how I was able to take those meetings and techniques and went over straight to the field and executed it at a high level. The install was new for everyone so a big part of practice was being able to simply adapt quickly and fit into the new scheme,” Reid said.

“My coaches there joked with me during camp about my Pro Day numbers as well as talking about how well I did in my 40 and other drills.”

Two Rutgers football players at New York Jets rookie minicamp

Two Rutgers football players are at Jets rookie minicamp.

Two Rutgers football players are getting the weekend to impress the New York Jets at rookie minicamp. Wide receiver Shameen Jones and defensive back Keenan Reid are both participating in the Jets’ weekend camp.

The duo of Jones and Reid are both listed as tryout players by the Jets. Both players had strong Pro Day performances in early March.

Jones is a polished wide receiver who has shown some good flashes during his five years at Rutgers. Last season, he had 16 catches for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

In a 27-21 loss at Michigan State, he had two catches for 41 yards with a touchdown. At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Jones has good size and is a solid route runner.

Reid detailed his performance at the Pro Day, where he said he met with several scouts from the Jets following his impressive showing during the workout.

“My journey and story are different than most considering the fact I didn’t play as much during my time at Rutgers,” Reid told Rutgers Wire this week.

“But I knew with my Pro Day results it would at least give me a chance to get looked at. I never lost faith in my abilities. All I wanted was an opportunity to show what I can do.”

Keenan Reid is ready for New York Jets rookie minicamp: ‘All I wanted was an opportunity’

Rutgers football defensive back Keenan Reid is set to join the New York Jets for rookie minicamp

It has been an unconventional path to the NFL for Keenan Reid as the Rutgers football defensive back will join the New York Jets this month for rookie minicamp.

In his three years at Rutgers, Reid played in a total of seven games and did not register a start. He made one career tackle, on special teams, in 2021. But at the Rutgers Pro Day in March, Reid put up some very strong numbers in his testing.

His 40-time of a 4.41 was followed up by a 4.37 on his next run. He also posted a 40-inch vertical and a broad jump of 10-feet-9-inches.

All numbers that were impressive, especially since only six defensive backs at the NFL Combine in March ran a faster 40 time.

The Jets ran several scouts deep at the Rutgers Pro Day and Reid said he talked with the entire representation. He participated in their local day at the team’s facility where he had a workout with the team.

The performance at the Pro Day clearly paved the path for Reid to get this opportunity with the Jets.

“Pro Day was huge for me,” Reid said. “I was very confident in my abilities and just wanted to showcase what I knew I could do in front of the NFL scouts.”

In the sixth round of last weekend’s NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Rutgers defensive back Christian Braswell.

A second-team All-Big Ten by Pro Football Focus, Braswell made five starts and had 12 appearances this past season. He had 37 total tackles and three interceptions as a senior.

Rutgers football: Keenan Reid invited to New York Jets rookie camp

Keenan Reid will participate in New York Jets rookie minicamp.

Rutgers football defensive back Keenan Reid has been invited to the New York Jets rookie minicamp this month.

Reid will participate in the May rookie minicamp and hope to catch-on with the team for further offseason workouts and then training camp later this summer.

At the Rutgers Pro Day in March, Reid checked in at 5-foot-9 and 183 pounds. He was among the event’s best performers, posting a strong 40-inch vertical along with impressive time in the 3-cone shuttle (7.15) and 4.21 time in the 20-yard shuttle.

His first time in the 40-yard dash was a 4.5. He followed that up on his next run with an impressive 4.41, the fastest of the day for any Rutgers athlete.

Reid spent three seasons with Rutgers. He was twice named All-Academic Big Ten.
