Duke women’s golfer Katie Li set to compete in U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday

Duke’s Katie Li, who made the All-ACC team as a freshman last year, will aim to make the cut at one of the biggest tournaments in women’s golf this weekend.

The U.S. Women’s Open, one of five major championships in women’s professional golf, gets underway at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania on Thursday.

Considering the Blue Devils have seven national championships on their resume, there are usually Duke alums aplenty at the biggest fields of the year. This time around, however, a player currently on Duke’s roster will try to take down the 156-woman field.

Katie Li, who just finished her freshman season with the Blue Devils, will tee it up for Thursday’s opening round, kicking off the four-day event. Li made the All-ACC team in her debut Duke season after she finished the year with a scoring average of 72.67. She also won the Florida State Match Up after back-to-back rounds of 6-under 66 to open the tournament, becoming the 16th Blue Devil to win a tournament as a freshman.

Li tees off on the 10th hole at 7:07 a.m. on Thursday morning playing alongside Elizabeth Szokol and Yuka Nii.

Duke fans can follow her on the leaderboard here with coverage scheduled to begin on Peacock at noon Eastern time before transferring to the USA Network at 2 p.m.

Two Blue Devils, graduate student Emma McMyler and freshman Katie Li, made the 2024 All-ACC Women’s Golf Team revealed on Thursday.

McMyler and Li took two of the 15 spots up for grabs among the entire conference.

McMyler posted a team-best 71.67 scoring average across her eight individual performances. She finished in the top 10 twice, including a tie for fourth at the Windy City Collegiate Classic after a second-round 67 and a final-round 69. She also finished in a tie for 17th at the ACC Championship.

Li finished her debut Duke season with a scoring average of 72.67, and she claimed the Florida State Match Up for her first collegiate win. She fired back-to-back rounds of 66 in the opening two rounds en route to a -12 performance, winning by three strokes over Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion Lottie Woad.

The Blue Devils won the Florida State Match Up by 10 strokes over the hosting Seminoles, and McMyler finished in a tie for ninth.

Only three other teams in the conference had multiple players nominated. Clemson and Florida State both had two nominees while Wake Forest had four.

It set a new Blue Devils 18-hole record.

Duke is going need to update its women’s golf record books after its latest victory.

The Blue Devils won the Florida State Match Up on Saturday at Seminole Legacy in Tallahassee, Florida. Duke shot 30 under to beat the hosts, Florida State, by 10 shots to pick up its second win of the year. However, it’s the second-round performance that’s the talk of the tournament.

Duke shot 24-under 264, the third-lowest 18-hole score in NCAA women’s college golf history, on Friday afternoon. It set a new Duke 18-hole record, put the Blue Devils at 31-under 545 after 36 holes, also a new school record.

Meanwhile, freshman Katie Li picked up the first win of her college career, finishing at 12 under to win by three shots over Florida State’s Lottie Woad and Baylor’s Rosie Belsham. Li’s mark of 12 under after 36 holes was a school record, and she became the first freshman to record consecutive rounds of 66 or better.

For legendary coach Dan Brooks, it’s his 143rd victory leading the Blue Devils, the most by any women’s golf coach in NCAA Division I history. It’s also the lowest winning score in the history of the tournament.
