10 athletes who turned out to be great actors, from The Rock to LeBron James

Who made the list?

With Tom Brady making his biggest leap to the big screen with 80 for Brady, the history of athletes who turn to acting is getting another evaluation.

While some athletes don’t exactly make the leap to movies and television with much success, there have been some who have transcended their sport to really make a name for themselves in the acting world.

Some athletes have turned in amazing performances in classic films and T.V. shows, while others have really impressed by just playing a heightened version of themselves.

While a phenomenal actor like Kurt Russell played baseball for some time, we include actors below who got their start on a sports field before making jump to acting. Russell was a child star for Disney before making his debut on the baseball diamond.

Let’s break down 10 of the most successful athletes who have flipped over their talents into acting. (Sorry, Patriots faithful, TB12 didn’t make the cut.)

When will LeBron James break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record? Our tracker, updated after Knicks game

When will LeBron break the record for most career points? Our tracker will help.

LeBron James is approaching one of the all-time great NBA records that you might have thought was unthinkable to break: The most total points in a career, set by the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 38,387 in his storied years.

James, as of Wednesday morning, now has 38,299 in his career, so it’s only a matter of a few games before he breaks the record. But if you’re wondering when to tune in or perhaps try to see it in person (I imagine it’ll be expensive), this tracker will attempt to help you out.

Let’s see when James might break the record in the next few games:

Here’s what the odds say about when LeBron James could break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record

The stars are aligning for a perfect record-breaking night.

LeBron James scored 46 points Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers, his fourth game of at least 43 points in the last month — though the first in a losing effort.

However, while his scoring surge didn’t help the Los Angeles Lakers get a win Tuesday, it did move up the timeline on when he’s expected to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record.

James’ scoring average is up to 30.2 points per game this season, incredibly the third-highest of his career. If he continues at that rate without missing a game, he’ll break the record in six games, at the New Orleans Pelicans on Feb. 4.

However, the odds favor him to take a couple more games to get it done and break it on Feb. 9 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

It would be an incredible aligning of the stars for James to break Abdul-Jabbar’s record in Los Angeles, in a Lakers jersey against the team that drafted Abdul-Jabbar and eventually traded him to the Lakers. And the Hall of Famer would likely show up in person to see the monumental record fall.

If it doesn’t happen that day, a very close second is +200 odds for it to happen Feb. 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. That wouldn’t be nearly as exciting, and something tells me James won’t let it go down like that.

LeBron James reaches scoring milestone versus 76ers

LeBron James has entered an extremely exclusive club in terms of career points as he nears Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s record.

Sunday was another frustrating night for the Los Angeles Lakers. They lost another down-to-the-wire game, this time to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The contest was hard fought throughout, and LeBron James played brilliantly. He scored 35 points on 15-of-23 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and 10 assists.

But in the end, the ball wasn’t in his hands. Instead, Russell Westbrook took the final shot, which was blocked by Sixers forward Georges Niang.

Still, James notched another statistical milestone, becoming only the second NBA player and first non-center to reach 38,000 career points.

He trails legendary Lakers big man Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who has 38,387 points, on the all-time scoring list.

James has been playing some remarkable basketball since the start of December, putting up 31.6 points on 53.4% shooting during that span. If he maintains anything close to that type of pace, he will surpass Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record by the end of February.

MVP vote: Who got screwed up the most in NBA history?

HoopsHype uses Global Rating to break down the players who didn’t get as much MVP love as they deserved, including LeBron James and Kareem.

Voting for MVP is never easy, though some years there are more clear winners than others. And yet, there are also times when a player might seem like an obvious choice for MVP but he still doesn’t win the award. To determine which players were most overlooked for the MVP title, we looked back at each season and identified the player with the highest Global Rating.

For those unaware, Global Rating is a metric we’re using to measure the on-court impact of NBA players. And if you’re wondering how it accurate it might be in selecting MVPs, it correctly predicted the last two recipients of the award (both Nikola Jokic).

As it turns out, it was the megastars who got hurt in MVP voting the most. Per our research, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt ChamberlainLeBron James and Michael Jordan, winners of 19 MVP awards, should have actually combined for 37 Maurice Podoloff trophies (now renamed after Jordan).

For this exercise, we awarded 10, seven, five, three or one point to the Top 5 finishers in both Global Rating ranking and the actual MVP vote and found the difference.

LeBron James said he won’t cry after breaking the scoring record, and the reason is so unfair

LeBron also revealed the one thing that would make him cry.

Breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record isn’t exactly a realistic goal for most players. But LeBron James, who’s likely to eclipse Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mark this season, isn’t most players.

Inarguably one of the greatest of all-time, it was pretty clear from the beginning that James would be good at this basketball thing, and he’d be good for a long time.

But scoring record good? That’s just not something anyone can predict. And according to James, he didn’t see it for himself either.

So, when asked by a fan sitting courtside of the Lakers game in Detroit on Sunday whether he would cry when it happens, James said he wouldn’t.

“I ain’t even try to do it!”

What an incredible flex. Yeah, I broke an unbreakable record, but it’s not like I tried. Even if it’s true — which I believe it is — the response just puts into context how insane it is that we got here.

Entering Tuesday’s game against the Boston Celtics, James is 829 points from breaking the record. At his current average of 26.2 points, he would need about 32 more games to get there. That means it could happen sometime in February as long as he doesn’t miss an extended period of time.

What it doesn’t do is give the Lakers a better chance at winning a championship, which James said would make him cry. Their odds are just +5000 at BetMGM, behind 15 other teams.

Unless Rob Pelinka makes some moves, James might want to cherish the moment he gets the record a little more — even if it wasn’t something he tried to do. Because a title ain’t coming this year.

On this day: Big man Tacko Fall born; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar goes for 55 vs. Boston

On this day, Boston Celtic big man Tacko Fall was born, and legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar hung 55 points on the Celtics.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former two way big man Elhadji Tacko Sereigne Diop Fall — better known to his fans as just “Tacko” — was born in Dakar, Senegal.

Fall’s path to the NBA was a fraught one involving shady handlers nearly costing him his visa, but after some rough going early on in his career as a potential NBA prospect, the Senegalese center would land at Liberty Christian Preparatory School in Tavares, Florida. From there, he would accept an offer to attend the University of Central Florida in nearby Orlando to play at the NCAA level.

At UCF, he would earn American Athletic Conference (AAC) Defensive Player of the Year (2017) and AAC Third Team (2019) honors.

The L.A. Times Sports staff revealed the results of that ambitious question. Their experts only looked at players who played at least 100 games with the franchise. Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and Shaquille O’Neal topped the list. One player who felt like he was shorted, however, was Nick “Swaggy P” Young. He tweeted: “The hate is real why ya’ll hate me but love me..” after the results of the poll were posted online.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: His inability to understand why his posts are news can be seen in this statement: “There’s things being posted every day. I’m no different from the next human being, so don’t treat me any different. You guys come in here and make up this powerful influence that I have (and say) you cannot post that. Why not? Why not?” If he really thinks someone with millions of followers spouting hate speech is the same as Jim in accounting posting on Facebook, then he really is out of step with reality. -via Substack / November 3, 2022
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: The Nets finally forced Irving to acknowledge the damage he’s done and donate $500,000 to groups opposing hate speech. In his statement you can almost hear his arm being twisted: “I oppose all forms of hatred and oppression and stand strong with communities that are marginalized and impacted every day. I am aware of the negative impact of my post towards the Jewish community and I take responsibility.” But there was no explicit apology—which tells us everything about what he really believes. -via Substack / November 3, 2022

Shaquille O’Neal jealous of LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record

Shaquille O’Neal brought up the topic of James and him closing in on Abdul-Jabbar’s record on the show “IMPAULSIVE” (at the 26:42 mark) and said that James passing Abdul-Jabbar’s record actually has him jealous. “LeBron’s about to do something that hasn’t been done in a long time and I think he will put his move up there,” Shaquille O’Neal said. “To pass up Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, I can truthfully say I’m jealous of that feat.” Although he said that Michael Jordan is the greatest player ever in his eyes, he had plenty of praise for LeBron James and the record he is about to break.

So were this the regular season, LeBron James would have seen his all time record of 1096 straight games scoring 10+ pts come to an end as he scored 4 in 16 min in a loss to SAC. He shot 0-7 FG. Only 1x, in his 3rd season. has he ever played a game in which he did not have a FG – 3:00 AM

LeBron laughed when @Brad Turner asked him about his 0 for 7 preseason night and if he’s still getting his legs under him: “I’ve been 0-fer before. Final: Kings 105, Lakers 75.
The Lakers led after a half 46-41, but after LeBron, AD and Russ all sat, it flew apart. Will be interested to see how it goes when they get more time — when they played, the supporting cast looked good around them. – 12:55 AM

Davis has controlled the defensive glass thus far with 9 rebounds in 12 minutes. He’s 2 for 5 with a made 3 on the other end.

Ball is Life: LeBron James was asked about his thoughts & relationship with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. “No thoughts & no relationship.” -via Twitter / October 4, 2022
If he averages a more modest 24 points per game and misses 15% to 20% of the season, James would be nearing the plateau somewhere in the range of Game Nos. 65 to 68. That coincides with a homestand in early March when the Lakers host the Golden State Warriors (March 5), Memphis Grizzlies (March 7), Toronto Raptors (March 10) and New York Knicks (March 12). -via ESPN / September 27, 2022
James can continue to climb the ladder in two accumulation categories this season. He enters the campaign third all time in minutes played with 52,139, needing 2,714 more to pass Malone for second. He would have to be in the lineup for around 75 games to do that. Abdul-Jabbar tops the list with 57,446 minutes. Speaking of games played, he is 14th on the all-time list with 1,366. If he plays in 59 contests this season, he would move up to eighth, passing Clifford Robinson, Reggie Miller, Jason Kidd, Tim Duncan, Jason Terry and Kevin Willis. -via ESPN / September 27, 2022
