Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas State doesn’t have Bijan Robinson.

Yeah, the Wildcat running game is amazing – and it does have Deuce Vaughn – but for the first time all season Kansas looked like … Kansas.

Texas got 243 rushing yards and four scores out of Robinson as part of the 427 the team came up with, but that’s baked into the KU cake. It’s just not that great against the run, but it usually overcomes it with its own offensive production.

Kansas State takes things up a few notches once the defense starts taking the ball away, but Kansas hasn’t been too bad at limiting the mistakes lately. Penalties haven’t been a real problem all year, and as long as there aren’t multiple turnovers, the offense should be able to keep up.

The Jayhawks are the best in the Big 12 at converting on third downs, they have the league’s most efficient passing game, and …

Why Kansas State Will Win

Yeah, Deuce Vaughn.

He killed Kansas last year with 162 yards and three scores on just 11 carries, and he caught six passes for 70 yards. As a freshman he ran for 71 yards and a score and caught four passes for 81 yards. Just assume 100 rushing yards in this, but he hardly has to do it alone.

Will Howard has cranked up the passing game – he was terrific last week in the 48-31 win over West Virginia – for a balanced attack that should move the ball at will against the worst defense in the Big 12.

But it’s going to be about the running game.

Kansas State has 220 yards or more seven times. Kansas is 0-4 when allowing 260 yards or more, the Wildcats were able to get there three times, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready for the show.

Kansas will crank up the attack to make this a fun back-and-fourth fight, but the other side will always have an answer.

The Kansas State defense is good enough against the run, the team is among them best in the country in turnover margin, and is should all come together in the 14th straight win in the series.

Why Kansas Will Win

There wasn’t any issue taking down the Wildcats a few weeks ago in a 74-51 win. The Jayhawks were solid from the field, but 1) the defense took over and 2) they came up with a whole lot of rebounds.

Kansas State has lost 12 straight because of an offense that’s struggling way too much to keep up with any sort of pace. The 80-77 loss to Texas was the only time in the last ten games – and the second time in the last 15 – it managed more than 70 points.

It’s the worst scoring O in the Big 12 and there are way too many turnovers to screw up any chances to get on a run. However …

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas isn’t great at defending the three.

It’s been okay lately, but get hot from the outside and it’s possible to beat the Jayhawks. It’s asking a lot out of a Kansas State team that’s hit or miss from the field and from the outside, but somehow get to 40% from three, and beat Kansas.

The Jayhawks 1-6 in their last seven games when teams are able to get to that 40% mark. K-State has only been able to get there three times all year, but it was hot against Texas Tech just a few days ago and need to keep bombing away to potentially pull this off.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas will dominate on the boards and will force a whole lot of mistakes.

Kansas State is great at fighting the good fight at home, and then lose. The Jayhawks will struggle to get comfortable because of too many missed free throws, but they’ll make up for the problems by being +10 in rebound margin.

Kansas (11-6) vs Kansas State (5-13) Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State might be having major issues, but the defense hasn’t been bad – it’s easy to struggle when going against Baylor, Oklahoma, and the rest of the Big 12 stars on the road.

It doesn’t score a lot, but it’s happy to jack up threes to try staying in games, it moves the ball around fine with a whole lot of assists, and it’s going against a Kansas team that’s been struggling just as much.

It’s not hitting the offensive boards, the defense has gone bye-bye, and it’s on a run of four losses in the last five games. But …

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas desperately needs a break. Yes, it lost four of its last five games, but all of them were on the road and none of them were cheap, dropping the dates against Baylor, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Oklahoma State.

Now it gets a home game.

Kansas State might be able to move the ball, but it turns it over way too much, and – partly because of the style – it has way too many issues scoring. On the other side, for all of the good things the defense does, it doesn’t do much to stop anyone from three.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State will keep the score low and the game in check for almost a half, and then the Jayhawks will go on a run.

It’ll be more than a rivalry win for KU. It’ll be a cathartic one after a rough few weeks.

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks hung around with West Virginia for a while. It was a 38-17 loss, but at least it was a good step forward.

Overall, the secondary hasn’t been all that bad – it got ripped up a bit by the Mountaineers, and the game still didn’t get out of hand – and there likely won’t be too much to worry about from the Kansas State offense.

With QB Skylar Thompson out, the Wildcat attack struggled to get the passing game going against TCU with just 117 yards. Will Howard only hit 8-of-19 passes for 117 yards and a pick, but ….

CFN Experts Picks: College

Why Kansas State Will Win

Howard ran for 86 yards against the Horned Frogs, and …

Pooka is done.

Kansas star RB Pooka Williams ran for just 196 yards in the first four games, and now he’s gone, opting out on the rest of the season. This isn’t a Kansas team that can afford to lose playmakers.

Everything has to go right to pul the Jayhawks up out of the nosedive, but there’s sign to be a problem with that – they don’t take the ball away, and Kansas State doesn’t give it up.

This isn’t going to be a hard equation for Kansas State. Run the ball, control the clock, control the tempo, don’t make mistakes.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a rivalry game, so always throw in whatever clichés you see fit. The harsh reality is that Kansas is awful, and there’s nothing that will make the lines any better.

Kansas State isn’t going to take any chances, it’s going to win on the lines, and it’ll hold the ball for well over 35 minutes on the way to a workmanlike win.
