Kam Pettway earns offensive coordinator job at Charles Henderson High School

The former Auburn RB continues to climb the coaching ladder.

Auburn football has had a history of successful players who, after they finish up their playing days, have gone on to be coaches for the standouts of the future. One former Tiger is continuing that journey, as he steps into a new position on the gridiron.

[autotag]Kam Pettway[/autotag]was announced as the new offensive coordinator for Charles Henderson High School on Friday, his next step following a stint at Vincent High School in 2023.

Pettway played on the Plains under former coach [autotag]Gus Malzahn [/autotag]from 2014-2017. After being redshirted the first season, he went on to play in 28 games for the program and made 10 starts during his career.

He earned First Team All-SEC honors in 2016 after a season where he ranked No. 12 nationally in rushing average and was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist. Pettway returned as a starter in 2017 before he was plagued by injuries and missed the entire back half of the season.

He declared for the 2018 NFL Draft where he went undrafted and signed with the Minnesota Vikings. After a short time in the World Indoor Football League in 2019, he signed into a short time of the Fútbol Americano de México before the 2021 season.

Pettway has since held coaching positions at Central-Phenix City High School, Banks Academy and Vincent before now moving onto Troy to help coach the Charles Henderson Trojans.

He helped lead the Vincent Yellow Jackets to a playoff appearance in Class 2A in the 2023 season.

Auburn’s all-time record vs. Southern Conference teams

Here’s a complete look at Auburn football’s history against current members of the Southern Conference ahead of their Sept. 3 matchup with Mercer.

Auburn Football is set to kick off the 2022 campaign at Jordan-Hare Stadium against the Mercer Bears on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. CDT.

Auburn has a lengthy history with Mercer that began when both schools were members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The first-ever meeting took place in 1896 when the Tigers traveled to Macon, Georgia, and defeated the Bears 46-0. These two teams would go on to face each other nine times between 1897 and 1916.

Auburn would depart from the SIAC in 1921 but would play Mercer one last time in 1922, defeating the Bears 50-6 in Auburn. The Bears would disband their football program 20 seasons later and would reinstate it in 2014.

In 2017, Auburn and Mercer met on the football field for the first time in 95 years and would go on to play the closest game in the series. In Auburn’s 24-10 win over Mercer, quarterback [autotag]Jarrett Stidham[/autotag] passed for 364 yards, but it was [autotag]Kam Pettway[/autotag] who carried the load for Auburn by rushing for 133 yards and scoring three touchdowns.

Auburn holds a 12-0 all-time record over Mercer, but how have they stacked up historically against teams in Mercer’s league? Here’s a breakdown of Auburn’s history against current members of the Southern Conference:

Auburn football: Top 10 rushing yards in a single game by a Tiger

Auburn has had some great running backs throughout its history but only these guys have had the best single-game performances for the Tigers

Auburn has a legacy for having amazing running backs. Just look at the names: Bo Jackson, Stephen Davis, Joe Cribbs and so many more.

Saying that, it takes an extremely special game for a running back in a Tigers uniform to get into the top 10 of most rushing yards in a single game in the program’s history. In fact, only seven players can stake their claim to a spot in that exclusive group as one star — I will give you one guess who — has four of the top nine rushing performances of all time.

Yet it might surprise you who is at the top of the list. Here are the top 10 most rushing yards in a single game by an Auburn running back.
