Former Wisconsin defensive lineman Kalvin Barrett was appointed as the new Dane County Sheriff last week, replacing David Mahoney who will resign from his position on May 8.

Barrett came to the Wisconsin football program as part of their class of 2000, the group entering on the heels of the program’s two consecutive Rose Bowl victories.

The former Badger noted how the values he learned from his time with Wisconsin football and then-head coach Barry Alvarez still resonate with him up to this day.

“It really comes down to alignment, assignment and execution,” Barrett told UWBadgers.com’s Mike Lucas. “And that’s putting together a good game plan, making sure all the right pieces are in place and then executing that game plan or that lesson plan to the fullest. That mindset and those skills that were taught to me at that time have really transferred over to what I’m doing now…I’ve always had a fondness for law enforcement. Being a community servant or peace officer has always been in my heart.”

He is now set to enter the role as Dane County Sheriff after graduating from UW-Madison with a bachelor’s degree in 2004, spending 12 years in law enforcement in Wisconsin, teaching law enforcement and criminal justice at Madison College and earning a Master’s degree in criminal justice from American Public University last year.

“I am excited Kalvin Barrett will be our next Dane County Sheriff,” State Representative Shelia Stubbs said. “I know he will work to keep us safe and strengthen the relationships between law enforcement and all our communities in Dane County.”
