A two-game winning streak has Notre Dame trending in a small but positive direction, and Wednesday will give it the opportunity to sweep its three-game homestand when Pittsburgh comes to South Bend. The series between the Irish (13-8, 4-6) and Panthers (14-8, 5-6) goes back to 1927, and it’s the seventh most prolific series in Notre Dame history. The current ACC rivals also duked it out as members of the Big East.

John Mooney continues to approach personal milestones and climb lists. He needs only six rebounds to reach 800 for his career and become the sixth Notre Dame player under Mike Brey to achieve that milestone. With one more double-double this season, he’ll have 18, tying Bob Arnzen during the 1968-69 season for 13th most in a single campaign.

T.J. Gibbs has 1,443 career points and will catch Chris Quinn for 19th on Notre Dame’s scoring list. With 111 career blocks, Juwan Durham is five away from tying Jack Cooley on the program’s all-time list.

Notre Dame almost got back on the right track in a big way against No. 5 Florida State on Saturday. After losing an 11-point first half lead to the point where they were trailing by 14 in the second half, the Irish clawed back to where they had a chance until the very end. But it wasn’t enough in an 85-84 loss.

In the game’s final seconds, Notre Dame (11-8, 2-6) had one play to complete comeback. A 3-point attempt from Dane Goodwin missed the rim, and John Mooney came up with the rebound, but time expired before he put the ball back through the hoop. Florida State (17-2, 7-1) should at least maintain its No. 5 ranking.

Prentiss Hubb led all scorers with 24 points, including five 3-pointers. Juwan Durham and Mooney scored 16 points apiece. Durham came within one rebound of a double-double. With only five rebounds, Mooney’s double-double streak came to an end at 12 games, though he did record a team-high three steals.

Notre Dame Basketball: Seeking Win vs. Seminoles

Notre Dame (11-7, 2-5) will travel to play No. 5 Florida State (16-2, 6-1) on Saturday in a homecoming for Sunshine State natives John Mooney, Juwan Durham and Nate Laszewski. Not only will this be a tough test for the Irish, but to pull off the upset, they’ll have to do something neither team has done in this series: Win a game on the opponent’s home floor. Yes, the Seminoles are 4-0 against the Irish in Tallahassee, while the Irish have won all three meetings in South Bend.

Mooney draws attention for his double-doubles, but another player worth keeping an eye on in this one is Prentiss Hubb. He has scored at least 22 points in each of the Irish’s first four ACC road games. He’s also put up at least seven field goals in all of those games and is shooting 50.1 percent from the field. Last year in Tallahassee, he achieved his career high in rebounds with seven, so you know he’ll be a focus of the Seminoles’ game plan.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Close 2019 With Win Over Alabama A&M

As if there was any concern about its final game before the New Year and the rest of its ACC schedule, Notre Dame led wire-to-wire in an 82-56 win over Alabama A&M on Sunday at Purcell Pavilion. Five players scored in double figures for the Irish (9-4) while the Bulldogs (3-8) never recovered from a first half in which they shot 7 of 36 from the field (19.4 percent).

T.J. Gibbs had a 7-of-10 shooting performance while leading all scorers with 17 points. John Mooney pulled down his latest double-double of 16 points and 18 rebounds. Dane Goodwin scored 12 off the bench, and 11 points each came from Juwan Durham and Prentiss Gibbs. Durham went to the locker room after suffering a sprained left knee on a rebound but returned to the bench before the game was over.

Notre Dame finishes its nonconference schedule at 9-2. The slate that will determine whether it goes dancing in March begins Saturday with a trip to Syracuse. A win would get the Irish back on the right track after earlier ACC losses to North Carolina and Boston College.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Can’t Finish Comeback vs. Hoosiers

Drawing a tough Indiana team in the annual Crossroads Classic, Notre Dame could have let itself get smoked. Instead, it hung in until the very end and nearly won it. However, it’s unlikely anyone on the team is thinking of this as anything but a 62-60 loss.

Notre Dame (8-4) turned a 17-point deficit into a five-point lead with 3:42 left. But Armaan Franklin made two 3-pointers after that, including one that gave Indiana (11-1) the lead with 15.7 seconds left. John Mooney missed a game-tying layup, and Rex Pflueger was unable to connect on a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Mooney tied for the team lead in scoring with Dane Goodwin for 15 points and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Nate Laszewski met the bare minimum for a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Juwan Durham added 11 points.

Already ravaged by injuries to their rotation, the Irish momentarily suffered another blow when T.J. Gibbs went back to the locker room in the first half clutching his left leg. Though he returned before halftime, he appeared bothered by the leg while on the floor. Pfluger also was bitten by the injury bug with a sore groin before going back into the game a short time later.

Looking for any possible way to end its two-game losing streak, Notre Dame chose to break out the offensive firepower Tuesday against Detroit Mercy. The results was a 110-71 win that saw the Irish (7-3) turn it into a blowout little by little. The Titans (1-8) simply had no answer for a team that tied its single records for assists (33) and 3-pointers (20).

Six players scored in double figures for the Irish. Dane Goodwin was lethal off the bench, leading Notre Dame with 27 points in 28 minutes on 10-of-13 shooting. Just behind Goodwin was T.J. Gibbs, who scored all 18 of his points on 3-pointers. Nate Laszewski earned 12 of his 14 points off the bench from beyond the arc.

John Mooney reached the double-double mark again with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Also achieving a double-double was Prentiss Hubb, who had a 13-point, 11-assist line. Juwan Durham came within one rebound of joining the club but scored 16.

The Irish shot 59.4 percent from the field and made all eight of their free throws, though the charity stripe obviously wasn’t needed on this night.

Watch: Notre Dame Basketball Wins Fourth Straight

But with Mooney and Carmody out, Rex Pflueger took over, leading the Irish to a 63-53 victory while scoring a season-high 13 points.

Reigning ACC Player of the Week and double-double machine, John Mooney was a scratch Monday night at Purcell Pavilion when Notre Dame played host to Presbyterian.

Take out Robby Carmody who remains in concussion protocol and the lack of depth becomes visible to even the most-blind of eyes.

But with Mooney and Carmody out, Rex Pflueger took over, leading the Irish to a 63-53 victory while scoring a season-high 13 points.

Juwan Durham played the role of Mooney, pulling down 15 boards while scoring 11 himself.

Highlights:

The now 4-1 Fighting Irish have now taken four-straight contests after falling in their season-opener at top-10 North Carolina.

They try and make it five-straight Thursday when the Irish welcome a Toledo team to town that Mike Brey claims could win the MAC this season.

Catch that game Thursday on ACC Network.
