Six past winners highlight early commits for 2023 PNC Championship field

Vijay and Qass Singh will be back to defend their title in Orlando.

Six past champions have confirmed their entry for the 2023 PNC Championship, including defending champions Vijay and Qass Singh.

Vijay will be joined by colleagues John Daly (winner in 2021), Justin Thomas (2020), David Duval (2016), Stewart Cink (2013) and Bernhard Langer (2005, 2006, 2014, 2019) for the annual parent-child event at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, Grande Lakes on Dec. 14-17.

“I can’t tell you what it meant to win last year with Qass after 16 attempts. This tournament is so special to us, and it is such an important week for our family every year,” said Vijay. “We love everything about the tournament, from playing amongst so many legends of the game, to getting to know their kids, to just spending quality time with my son as we enjoy this unique inside-the-ropes experience together. I have played in so many tournaments all around the world over the years, but it genuinely is hard to think of a week that I look forward to and enjoy more than the PNC Championship.”

This year’s event, the 12th with PNC Bank as the title sponsor, will be broadcast live on NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock. Last year the PNC Championship boasted a field with 73 major titles. The tournament features 20 players and their relatives competing in a two-day, 36-hole scramble for the Willie Park Trophy. To qualify, players must have won a major championship or the Players Championship, and their partner must not hold any status on a professional tour.

Q&A (Part 2): Roger Maltbie dishes on Tiger Woods, says the way NBC reduced his role was ‘pretty (expletive)’

“They (NBC) were very good to me for a very long time. So I’ve got no hard feelings. But yeah, it was handled pretty sh**ty”  

Roger Maltbie has led a charmed life.

He’s the first to admit that winning 12 professional tournaments, including the first Memorial Tournament at Jack’s Place and the old World Series of Golf at Firestone, exceeded his expectations and made for a pretty respectable playing career. Then he made a seamless transition into television, working for more than three decades for NBC/Golf Channel, and becoming a fan favorite.

As he discusses in part two of a Q&A with Golfweek that was conducted at Silverado Resort during the Fortinet Championship last month, Maltbie may be making his final appearance behind the mic this weekend at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. (You can read part one of the Q&A here.)

Maltbie’s role was reduced this season to a handful of second-tier events and he doesn’t know yet if he’ll be asked back for next season in a similar capacity. But after chatting for a solid hour, Maltbie bid adieu with these classic words: “I’ve got to get suited up.” Here’s hoping he’s brought back for an encore.

There’s a good chance the trash talk between the two teams won’t stop until 2025 at Bethpage Black.

The United States’ struggles in Europe continued at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club outside Rome, losing to the Europeans 16½-11½.

Many of the players who participated in the biennial bash stayed put for a few days after Sunday night to take in the sights and spend some time with their loved ones.

Justin Thomas was part of that group, and he posted a photo dump of a Lake Como vacation with his wife, Jillian, to his Instagram.

One of the comments on the post came from European Ryder Cupper Shane Lowry — who went 1-1-1 in Italy — who posed a simple question: “Any pics from Rome???”

JT — who went 1-2-1 — replied, saying, “Shane it’s been two weeks and was starting to forget……”

Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka say PGA Tour, LIV Golf players are ‘sick’ of Alan Shipnuck after latest book excerpt

“Bring positivity and good stories to help grow the game of golf, not try and make money bashing guys,” said JT.

Justin Thomas is enjoying a little extended vacation this week in Italy after he and Team USA lost the 2023 Ryder Cup to Europe near Rome.

The 30-year-old two-time major champion went 1-2-1 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, where his lone win came during Sunday singles against Sepp Straka, 2 up. Thomas, who now holds a 7-4-2 record in the Ryder Cup, also attended Patrick Cantlay’s wedding down the road in Rome on Monday, a day after the U.S. lost the Cup.

While on his vacation, Thomas took to social media to respond to a 3,000-word excerpt of Alan Shipnuck’s new book, “LIV and Let Die: The Inside Story of the War between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf” that was shared on Wednesday. The book is available Oct. 17.

The excerpt included some juicy and Not Safe For Work comments about the battle for supremacy in professional golf over the last two and a half years, but Thomas didn’t much care for what was shared.

In response to part of the book where a former Ryder Cup teammate is critical of Rory McIlroy, Thomas spoke up “on behalf of a lot of Tour players” to say they are “sick” of Shipnuck “doing what he does.”

Brooks Koepka – who was featured in the excerpt with an expletive-riddled take on “country club kids who talk (expletive) about me,” allegedly referring to the likes of Thomas, Jordan Spieth and others – said LIV Golf players feel the same way about the Fire Pit Collective writer and author.

It didn’t take long for Shipnuck to join the party and defend himself online, saying that Thomas wants “PR or hagiography, not journalism.” He also defended his use of anonymous sources, who gave a few of the more controversial opinions.

Photos: New TGL stadium renderings revealed for Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy’s new golf league

The new league is set to start in January 2024.

We all know about Monday Night Football, but who’s ready for some Monday Night Golf?

After announcing their new company TMRW Sports in August of 2022, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy also introduced TGL, a “new tech-infused league” that will partner with the PGA Tour.

Six teams of three PGA Tour players will compete in 15 regular season Monday night matches, followed by semifinals and finals matches, starting January 2024. The matches will be played at a tech-infused, short-game complex. Fans will be able to see every shot live over a 2-hour broadcast on primetime television.

Of the 18 players, so far 12 have been announced.

So far, four ownership groups have been announced with TGL Atlanta, TGL Boston, Los Angeles Golf Club and TGL New York.

On Monday, the TGL announced a multi-year partnership with SoFi Technologies, a digital personal finance company. SoFi is now the presenting sponsor of TGL, and the league’s arena on the campus of Palm Beach State College will be named the SoFi Center.

The SoFi Center is a nearly 250,000-square-foot venue that will house nearly 2,000 people at the Palm Beach Gardens Campus of Palm Beach State College. The air-supported dome is 75 feet high and covers the entire playing surface (97 yards by 50 yards). The hitting screen is 46 feet by 64 feet, roughly 20 times larger than a standard simulator screen. The venue also features a 40-yard-wide short game complex with three dynamic putting surfaces on a larger 3,800-square-foot putting surface. And don’t forget the three sand bunkers.

There will be two plazas outside the venue for pre-event activities and the entire facility is ADA-accessible.

2023 Ryder Cup live updates: Team USA vs. Team Europe at Marco Simone in Italy

It’s all over in Rome.

The 44th Ryder Cup came to an end Sunday when Rickie Fowler conceded a  putt to Tommy Fleetwod, handing Team Europe its 15th point, The Euros needed 14 ½ to reclaim the Cup they lost two years in the U.S.

The Europeans held a 5-point advantage, leading 10½-5½, heading into the Sunday singles matches.

The host course, Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, is a public-access layout with tee times available on the course’s website starting at 190 Euros for international players. The course played to a par 71 with the scorecard showing 7,181 yards.

The Americans, captained by Zach Johnson, tried to win on foreign soil for the first time since 1993 but that streak will continue. Team Europe rode an influx of young talent for captain Luke Donald.

Set your alarms, folks. You don’t want to miss these final 12 matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup.

European captain Luke Donald and American captain Zach Johnson announced their picks for the 12 Sunday singles matches and a handful are appointment television, no matter the time.

Team Europe holds a 10½-5½ lead after the first four sessions, but the momentum appears to have swung back toward the U.S. after the Americans claimed Saturday fourballs, 3-1. The Europeans need four points to win the Cup, while the U.S. needs at least 8½ to retain.

Europe inches closer to winning 2023 Ryder Cup, but U.S. wins Saturday fourballs session to maintain glimmer of hope

The Americans have some work to do Sunday to retain the Cup.

ROME – For the first time at the 44th Ryder Cup, the U.S. won a session at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

After winning the Saturday afternoon fourballs 3-1, the U.S. trails 10 ½ to 5 ½ and will need to erase the largest deficit in Ryder Cup history if it is going to retain the Cup.

But we’re saying there’s a chance, especially after Patrick Cantlay birdied the final two holes, including a 30-foot birdie putt at 18, to flip his match.

“Hopefully have a ray of light and we can build on this session and try and pull off a big victory tomorrow,” Cantlay said.

Two years ago, the U.S. led 11-5 at Whistling Straits before cruising to a 19-9 victory. No team has rallied from more than a 10-6 deficit, but the U.S. only needs to reach 14 points to retain the Cup. In both 1999 and 2012, the winning side earned 8 ½ points in Sunday singles.

The U.S. showed some life winning the first two matches, but the Euros bounced back to win the third match and inch closer to extending the U.S. losing streak on European soil, which dates to 1993. It looked as if it would be a split of the session. That is until Cantlay’s heroics.

“Feels like we have momentum and we go kind of into the locker room laughing a little bit which just feels good,” Max Homa said.

Europe expands Ryder Cup lead over United States after Saturday foursomes thanks to historic match win

The Europeans are cruising through the Ryder Cup.

ROME – There was more blue on the board on Saturday morning.

Team Europe extended its lead in the 44th Ryder Cup to 9½- 2½ after Saturday morning’s foursomes session, winning three of the four matches. That included Norway’s Viktor Hovland and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg trouncing the American team of Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, 9 and 7, the worst loss in Ryder Cup history in any 18-hole match, regardless of format.

There was no let up in the European side after opening a five-point lead after the first day. They won three of four matches and seven of eight in the foursomes format. It ties the largest lead after three sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the five-session format in 1963. (The U.S. led by seven in both 1967 and 1975.)

“Last night we talked about enjoying what we did yesterday but coming out and showing no mercy today,” McIlroy said. “Obviously the way Ludvig and Viktor started off and the way we started off, you know, that set the tone for the day again.”

It was a bloodbath for the Americans and for those fans who woke up early in hopes of seeing a valiant comeback, they were better off hitting the snooze as the Americans were thrown to the lions in Rome.

2023 Ryder Cup Saturday morning pairings, tee times see Team Europe roll out sweep lineup

Europe is staying with its four pairings that swept the U.S. on Friday morning while the Americans make changes.

The United States made history on Friday, but not in a good way.

The Americans failed to win a match on Friday at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome, Italy, marking the first time the U.S. has gone a full day without a win in the event’s nearly 100-year history.

The Europeans brought their brooms on Friday morning and swept the U.S. in foursomes before 2½ more points to their tally in afternoon fourballs to claim a 6½-1½ lead after Day 1.

How will the Americans respond on Saturday morning? By sending out two pairings from the Friday morning session and sticking with two that earned ties in the afternoon.
