Georgia WR Arik Gilbert named PFF first-team All-SEC

Georgia WR Arik Gilbert named PFF first-team All-SEC

Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently released its preseason All-SEC selections for the upcoming 2021 season.

Georgia football is represented by first-team selection, LSU transfer Arik Gilbert at receiver, along with four other first-team selections in defensive back Tykee Smith, senior guard Justin Shaffer, senior linebacker Nakobe Dean and senior punter Jake Camarda.

Gilbert played tight end at LSU but is officially listed as a receiver on UGA’s roster.

A former five-star recruit out of Marietta, Ga., Gilbert signed with Georgia after a solid freshman season at LSU where he caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns in eight games played.

A more telling stat is Gilbert’s ability to win jump balls, something that the Bulldogs will be missing without star receiver George Pickens – who’s out indefinitely with an ACL tear.

So at least on the surface, UGA may be able to plug-and-play Gilbert while Pickens rests up for a possible championship run.

Georgia G Justin Shaffer named PFF preseason All-American

Georgia G Justin Shaffer named PFF preseason All-American

Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently named the top offensive lineman at each position for the 2021 season and Georgia football is represented at right guard by senior Justin Shaffer.

After seeing action in six games in 2019, Shaffer started every game at left guard in 2020 before moving to right guard versus Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl.

Shaffer will be a huge part of Bulldog line that lost All-SEC talent to the NFL draft in center Trey Hill and guard Ben Cleveland.

Shaffer showed he can be a solid contributor with his performance last season and paired with senior Jamaree Sayler, Georgia should be able to fill in the gaps with guys like Sedrick Van Pran, Warren Ericson, Warren McClendon and Broderick Jones.

Here’s what PFF had to say about Shaffer’s All-American selection,

“Shaffer finally earned a starting spot in 2020 after three years of limited game action. While he was rather inconsistent, his high-end play earns him a spot on this list. He was the fourth-highest-graded Power Five guard in 2020. Shaffer finished with the seventh-best positively graded run-block rate in the Power Five last season, performing well on true pass sets for a first-time starter in the SEC. He ranked eighth in the Power Five and second in the SEC in true pass set blocking grade.”

PFF preseason All-American offensive line:

  • T Thayer Munford, Ohio State
  • G Cain Madden, Notre Dame
  • C Tyler Linderbaum, Iowa
  • G Justin Shaffer, Georgia
  • T Darian Kinnard, Kentucky
