Chiefs S Justin Reid on rookie maturation: ‘We don’t have rookies anymore’

Justin Reid believes the #Chiefs’ rookie class has enough experience to throw out the title of rookie altogether. | from @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs have utilized their rookie class consistently this season. Regardless of the draft selection, contributions have helped lead to a seventh straight AFC West title with sights on the top spot in the conference.

An early supporter of the young talent in the secondary has been veteran safety, Justin Reid. The fifth-year veteran defensive back was a new member of the Chiefs, signing during the free agency period, but took on the role of mentor quickly.

Reid shared his thoughts on the rookie’s progression this season with reporters after Wednesday’s practice by making a bold statement about their experience.

“Well, first and foremost, I’m just going to go ahead and say it, we don’t have rookies anymore,” said Reid. “They’ve had enough experience (and) they’ve had enough games under their belt. They’re first-year players still but that title ‘rookie,’ we really want to throw that out the window because of the experience and the snaps they have under their belt, the pelts they have on the wall, and also just to encourage them to take just a little more ownership and leadership in continuing to grow and mature and be dominate.”

First-round picks Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis have shown flashes of excellence throughout the year, while seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco has become a reliable starter at running back. Reid recognizes the young players’ growth so far this season and expects more from them as the postseason approaches.

“As December comes around, eventually January (and) eventually February, things are only going to get faster,” said Reid. “There is no way to really prepare them for how the speed will change other than to continue to harp on how you can get better day in and day out and challenge yourself week in and week out to execute on all the details. Mistakes are magnified in the playoffs (and) the speed of the game is a lot faster, but they’re ready for it. The best way to have confidence going into the playoffs is to make sure that we finish out this week strong and the next week strong, so they don’t feel like there are any weaknesses going into the playoffs for us.”

The Chiefs will need to win out for the regular season and get some help if they are to achieve their goal as the AFC’s top seed. The first-round bye week could prove essential for the ailing veterans and the young stars preparing for their first NFL postseason.

Behind Enemy Lines: Previewing the Texans’ Week 15 with Chiefs Wire

The Houston Texans take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15. To preview the matchup, @goldmctnfl stops by to give the opponent’s perspective.

The Houston Texans take on the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from NRG Stadium.

The Texans haven’t beaten the Chiefs since Oct. 13, 2019 in what feels like an entirely different reality altogether. Sunday’s matchup may be another extension of Kansas City’s win streak against Houston — currently at two games, including the playoffs.

The Texans are going to give it their all — the most “all” that a 1-11-1 club can muster. Kansas City is in a tightly contested race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. They won’t be overlooking the Texans.

To help preview the matchup for Week 15, Charles Goldman from the Chiefs Wire fielded a few questions about Kansas City.

Chiefs S Justin Reid ‘excited’ for Texans reunion in Week 15

Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid is looking forward to playing against the Houston Texans, the team that gave him his start in the NFL.

Week 13 saw the Houston Texans welcome back their former franchise quarterback, who was making his debut with the Cleveland Browns. Fans showered him with boos inside NRG Stadium.

The Texans have another reunion upcoming as the Kansas City Chiefs visit for Week 15. Former safety Justin Reid will be suiting up for the 10-3 squad that just needs a win to clinch a playoff spot.

Reid, a former 2018 third-round pick from Stanford, is looking forward to his return to NRG Stadium.

“I’m excited,” Reid said via Charles Goldman from the Chiefs Wire. “A lot of love for the players and coaching staff. So, it’s a fun game for me personally to be in the atmosphere I began my career in.”

Reid was well thought of during his time with the Texans, earning the Ed Block Courage Award in 2019, an award voted on by his teammates.

The 25-year-old was also onboard with the promotion of Lovie Smith from defensive coordinator to coach in February.

Reid has 60 combined tackles, two quarterback hits, and two pass breakups in his 13 games with the Chiefs, all of them he has started.

Chiefs’ Justin Reid takes another shot at Bengals after Week 13 loss

Chiefs DB Justin Reid continues to take shots at the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals had to deal with some pre-game trash talk from Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Justin Reid this past week before going out and getting a win.

Reid then apologized in the post-game presser for not giving Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst his respect.

But on Tuesday…Reid got to talking again, this time on Twitter. In a bit of a strange tweet, Reid said that while the Chiefs lost, he was still right and told onlookers to “cry about it.”

A strange comment, considering Reid’s defense was the biggest reason for the loss, making the Chiefs 0-3 against the Bengals in the 2022 calendar year:

Reid had predicted he’d lock down Hurst and others. But Hurst left early with an injury. Tee Higgins scored a touchdown. Ja’Marr Chase had 97 yards and a pair of critical plays in the fourth quarter. Tyler Boyd would have scored too if he didn’t drop a wide-open touchdown.

Reid might be a little irritated that Joe Burrow took a bit of a shot at him on Monday, but things have reached a silly point now as the Bengals turn their attention to the Cleveland Browns.

Chiefs S Justin Reid remorseful for comments made about Bengals TE Hayden Hurst

#Chiefs S Justin Reid told reporters he apologized to #Bengals TE Hayden Hurst for the pregame comments he had made.

Kansas City Chiefs S Justin Reid made headlines earlier this week for all the wrong reasons.

His pregame comments about Bengals TE Hayden Hurst sparked a ton of back-and-forth with Cincinnati’s players ahead of the game. The talk even earned a stern remark from Andy Reid during Friday’s media availability.

Asked if he had any regrets for the comments he made, Reid explained that he’d apologized to Hurst for not paying him the proper respect. Outside of that, Reid stuck by his guns. He says that he remains confident in his teammates and their ability on defense and always will.

“I feel bad that I didn’t know — I didn’t give the proper respect to Hayden Hurst in this game,” Reid said. “I apologized to him for that. I still feel confident and always will be confident in our team and our defense to go out and play tough football. Credit to (the Bengals), they went out and played a hell of a game today. (They) made a couple of more plays than we did and came out with the win.”

Hurst made two catches for 12 yards on three targets during the game before exiting with a calf injury. Reid made four tackles on the night. He was taunted by WR Ja’Marr Chase during the game and he caught a wicked stiff arm from Bengals RB Samaje Perine.

Watch: Samaje Perine hits nasty stiff arm on Chiefs’ Justin Reid

Justin Reid did the talking before the game, Samaje Perine responded on the field.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Samaje Perine went viral a week ago for stiff-arming a defender in one of the meanest moves we’ve seen all season.

Perine did it again on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

And it wasn’t just any Chiefs defender, either. Perine’s victim was defensive back Justin Reid, who talked some trash about the Bengals before the game this week, then talked some more.

In fact, Ja’Marr Chase got called for a taunting penalty after a touchdown for getting in Reid’s face, an on-field reply (and one the coaches hated, too) of sorts to Reid.

Perine let his bullying style do the talking instead:

Chiefs S Justin Reid inserts himself into Bengals rivalry ahead of Week 13

He wasn’t part of the two losses to the #Bengals last season, but #Chiefs S Justin Reid is now at the center of the conversation ahead of the Week 13 rematch.

Kansas City Chiefs S Justin Reid wasn’t a member of the team for last year’s AFC title game, but the free-agent addition is now at the center of the budding rivalry with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaking to Fox 4 Kansas City’s PJ Green in the locker room on Wednesday, Reid couldn’t recall the name of Bengals TE Hayden Hurst. He’d just played the Rams where he was tasked with TE Tyler Higbee, but a reporter suggested he was thinking of Bengals WR Tee Higgins. Reid just ran with it, but specifically mentioned No. 88, which is Hurst.

“He’s more of a finesse type of guy, not the best blocker,” Reid says with a look of confidence. “I’m going to lock him down.”

Reid later clarified on Twitter he was speaking about Hurst, but that it didn’t change anything that he said. The Bengals took exception to his comments with star WR Ja’Marr Chase calling Reid out on Twitter.

“Let’s put some money on it big time,” Chase wrote.

“Y’all welcome for the extra motivation,” Reid responded. “Ima see you Sunday champ.”

Chase then resorted to some name-calling.

Bengals players have since responded to media members, including the actual subject of Reid’s comments, Hayden Hurst.

“You can pick anyone in this locker room, but I feel like I’m the last person you wanna talk shit about because I have a long memory,” Hurst said.

His teammate on the defensive side of the ball, Jessie Bates, had some thoughts on Reid’s inability to recall Hurst’s name.

“I know if you’re going to talk shit, you better know your personnel,” Bates said.

Emotions are high for plenty of Chiefs players who participated in both of last year’s losses to Cincinnati, but somehow it’s a player who had no part in those tightly-contested games fueling this AFC rivalry. One thing is for certain, if Reid’s going to talk the talk ahead of this game, he’s going to have to prove that he can walk the walk during it.

Hayden Hurst, Jessie Bates respond to Justin Reid before Chiefs vs. Bengals

More trash talk, this time as Bengals respond to Justin Reid.

The battle between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs this weekend had even more spice added to it on Thursday.

In the wake of Chiefs safety Justin Reid talking some trash and Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase quickly responding to it, two more Bengals have thrown down some talk, too.

Both tight end Hayden Hurst and safety Jessie Bates responded to the trash talk. Hurst was especially noteworthy considering it was his name getting tossed around by Reid.

“I don’t know,” Hurst said, according to ESPN’s Ben Baby. “You can pick anyone in this locker room. I feel like I’m the last person you wanna talk s—- about because I have a long memory.”

Then there was Bates, a fellow safety, who offered Reid some pregame advice:

The long and short of it? Reid said he’d clamp down everybody, then sparred with Chase on social media. Now Bengals on both sides of the ball have weighed in, too.

Everyone will get to settle the differences on Sunday at Paycor Stadium.

Ja’Marr Chase wants Chiefs safety Justin Reid to put a bet on his ridiculous vow to lock up every Bengals receiver

This was a bold statement by Reid.

Some people have to do a little talking to pump themselves up for maximum performance.

In sports, that can sometimes leads to unintended consequences…like pumping up the opponent.

Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid might have done both Wednesday when he said he would lock down any Cincinnati Bengals player he’s matched up against on Sunday.

It all started with him mistakingly saying he would lock down Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. The player he meant to say was tight end Hayden Hurst. But instead of simply correcting himself on Twitter, Reid doubled down by saying “any and everybody still getting locked up.”

Well, it’s funny he should say that, because Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and Bengals is also the game Ja’Marr Chase returns from his four-game absence.

He saw Reid’s bold claim and asked the safety to put his money where his mouth is. Reid didn’t accept the bet — at least not publicly — but he didn’t back down either.

This is the part where I should mention that Reid and Chase won’t be matched up often if at all in this game. But if and when it does happen, I don’t love Reid’s chances.

In fact, I don’t love his chances against most of Cincinnati’s weapons.

Reid has the NFL’s ninth worst passer rating allowed (125.6) among players with at least 11 games played, according to Pro-Football Reference. Even without the games played qualifier, his rating is bottom 10 among safeties.

To his credit, he does seem to keep big-yardage plays to a minimum, but he’s just the 56th rated safety out of 88 on Pro Football Focus.

So yeah, it’s probably a smart move not to take that bet. Because it’s not likely that he’ll lock up all of Chase, Higgins, Hurst, Tyler Boyd and Joe Mixon (if he returns from injury).

Either way, this adds a little spice to what was already a fun mid-season matchup with the Chiefs favored by 2.5 points on the road.

Ja’Marr Chase calls out Chiefs’ Justin Reid for pregame trash talk

Uno saw the comments and had thoughts on the matter.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase didn’t need long to see the trash talk from Kansas City Chiefs players.

For those out of the loop, a Chiefs defender went and threw out some bulletin board material for the Bengals on Wednesday before the two teams meet in Week 13.

Said trash talk included throwing out words like “finesse” and saying weapons like Tee Higgins and Hayden Hurst would get shut down.

Chase saw those before he makes his big return on Sunday, which means most of the Bengals offense, at a minimum, saw them too.

Reid went on social media to clarify his comments and Chase tracked him down there:

Reid acknowledged the bulletin board material and Chase fired back again:

The Chiefs didn’t do much shuttering of Chase over two encounters last season, for what it’s worth. But it’s still fun to see one of the NFL’s new great rivalries get some pregame sparring on well before actually taking the field.
