S Justin Reid: Adversity shows what type of team Texans have

The Houston Texans are not getting any easy road to the post-season. Their safety, Justin Reid, thinks that’s a good thing that will show the truth.

“If there’s not any adversity, it wouldn’t be any fun.”

Those were the words safety Justin Reid told reporters Monday, and the Houston Texans have their fair share after taking a 38-24 beating from the Denver Broncos Sunday at NRG Stadium.

Now, with the Tennessee Titans with an 8-5 record the same as the Texans, what seemed to have been a straight shot to a fourth consecutive AFC South title in five years has now become a dogfight fraught with adversity.

Though not struggling with new injuries, the Texans are dealing with a disheartening loss followed by a series of three games that will define their 2019 campaign.

Though worrisome based on the lack of definite possibilities, Reid wouldn’t have it any other way. Adversity will strike. As he says, it makes it more fun, as it forces one to get better and show their true colors.

“I feel like adversity really shows what type of team you got,” said Reid. “It shows what type of character you have. It’s not if adversity strikes, it when adversity strikes, how you respond to it, and that’s the type of mentality that we have.”

In recent years, the Texans aren’t the team to avoid adversity. Once it was poor quarterbacking that held them back — via Brian Hoyer, Brock Osweiler or whomever else — but it didn’t stop them reaching the playoffs. At other times, it was the opposite. In 2018, Houston got off to a 0-3 start, only to finish the season 11-5.

2019’s adversity comes within a lack of consistency. Throughout the season, they’ve beaten winning teams, notably the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, and have lost to reeling ones, such as the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers.

Houston’s ability to beat playoff teams and lose to lowly ones is their crux in 2019. It’s their sort of adversity. They can’t let it define them. In the next three weeks, they will face the surging 8-5 Tennessee Titans twice and the 6-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers once.

Will the Texans respond to the challenge and win the crown of the AFC South? Only time will tell how they react to that adversity that Reid thinks they so very need.

Justin Reid says Broncos came out with more urgency than Texans

The Denver Broncos beat the Houston Texans in upset fashion on Sunday. Safety Justin Reid says they came out with more urgency than Houston.

A 38-24 loss doesn’t quite depict the route the Houston Texans witnessed on Sunday to the Denver Broncos. From the get-go, Denver had Houston’s number, as indicated by a 14-0 first quarter lead and a 31-3 halftime score.

The Texans dropped to 8-5 in the loss, the Broncos got up to 5-8. A week after beating the New England Patriots at home, Houston fell flat in an opportunity to get closer to a potential first-round bye.

Texans safety Justin Reid feels that the Broncos played with a better sense of urgency, despite their lack of need to win to get to the playoffs.

“I think guys were prepped,” Reid told reporters after the game. “We were ready to go. It’s just, they came out with a better sense of urgency than we did.”

Reid called the loss “a little bit deflating.” However, he went on to say that the Texans won’t, or shouldn’t, dwell on it. The 8-5 Tennessee Titans are their new focus.

“But, the best thing we can do is just kind of flip the page on it as fast as we can,” Reid said. “We are going to watch the tape [and] learn from it. We got the Titans next week, basically for the division.”

The Texans will travel to Nashville to face the surging Titans, who have won four games in a row and five of the last six with Ryan Tannehill starting under center. The game, as Reid says, is essentially for the AFC South division. Both teams are currently tied at the top, with the Texans holding the tiebreaker based on division wins.

Houston’s loss to Denver was disappointing and, at times, downright embarrassing. There is no other way to spin it. However, they do have time. With three games left in the season, the Texans can either round out as a playoff team or shrink.

Justin Reid, Lonnie Johnson, Bradley Roby return to Texans practice

Injured cornerbacks Bradley Roby and Lonnie Johnson returned to practice for the Houston Texans on Monday.

The Houston Texans may have their complete secondary for their challenging Week 13 tilt with the New England Patriots. On Monday, safety Justin Reid and cornerbacks Lonnie Johnson and Bradley Roby returned to practice, per the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.

Reid suffered a concussion and shoulder injury in Week 11’s 41-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He was not cleared from the concussion protocol in time to make Houston’s 20-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

If Reid plays on Sunday, he will insert as the Texans’ starting free safety, where he has played since joining the starting lineup in 2018.

Like Reid, Johnson sustained an injury against the Ravens. His foot injury caused him to miss Thursday night’s tilt with Indy. A second-round pick out of Kentucky, he started over Johnathan Joseph while Roby missed time.

Roby has not played since Week 6’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs, in which he suffered a hamstring injury. He has been questionable since and was a game-time decision for Thursday’s win. If he is playing, he will likely insert as a starter, either in the slot or outside.

Texans-Colts Wednesday injury report: Justin Reid, Lonnie Johnson out

Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (ankle), tight end Mo-Allie Cox (thumb), tight end Eric Ebron (ankle) and wide receiver T.Y. Hilton (calf) are all questionable to play in the divisional contest.

Texans vs. Colts: Time, TV schedule and streaming info for Week 12

The Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts square off for a Week 12 encounter on Thursday Night Football. Find out how to watch the game.

The Houston Texans can quickly get the taste of Week 11’s 41-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens out of their mouths as they host the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night Football to kickoff Week 12.

One of the perils of facing the Colts on such a short week is the lack of prep time that comes with a Thursday night game, and the fact it is a very consequential matchup as the Texans have to prevent being swept by the Colts. Indianapolis currently holds the tiebreaker over Houston with a 30-23 win in Week 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium. A win would propel the Colts to 7-4 and drop the Texans to 6-5, almost a two-game swing because of the tiebreaker the Colts would have over the Texans.

Houston may be without safety Justin Reid due to a concussion, but they will have quarterback Deshaun Watson, who suffered an ankle injury in the loss at the Ravens. However, Reid has appeared as not having participated in practice the past two days while Watson has been a full participant.

The Colts are in a similar boat and may be without the services of running back Marlon Mack, who had a hand procedure on Monday to fix his fractured hand. Even on a regular week, it would be iffy to overcome that. On a Thursday night week, it is almost impossible.

Texans S Justin Reid not expected to play against the Colts

Houston Texans safety Justin Reid is not expected to play against the Indianapolis Colts with a concussion. Mike Adams is also not expected to play.

Justin Reid’s encouraging second season is expected to take a halt on Thursday night. The Houston Texans starting safety is not expected to play against the Indianapolis Colts, as he deals with a concussion,

Fellow safety Mike Adams will likely join Reid in not playing, as he too is nursing a concussion. Coach Bill O’Brien stated on Tuesday that any player dealing with a concussion is unlikely to be out of concussion protocol by Thursday’s divisional tilt. Therefore, both are not expected to play.

Reid is also dealing with a shoulder injury. He sustained both injuries in Sunday’s blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Adams suffered his concussion before the game.

In 10 starts in 2019, Reid has recorded 54 combined tackles, two pass deflections and an interception. Adams has played limited snaps as a backup.

With both Reid and Adams expected to miss the bout, the Texans will roll with Tashaun Gipson, Jahleel Addae and A.J. Moore at safety.
