Bears sign WRs Justin Hardy and Jon’Vea Johnson, waive two players

The Bears made some roster moves ahead of training camp, signing wide receivers Justin Hardy and Jon’Vea Johnson and waived two others.

The Chicago Bears reported for training camp on Tuesday, and the team made some roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s first practice.

The Bears signed a pair of wide receivers in Justin Hardy, as previously reported, and Jon’Vea Johnson. Chicago waived cornerback Rojersterman Farris and wide receiver Khalil McClain to make room on the 90-man roster.

Heading into training camp, head coach Matt Nagy is confident about the depth they have at wide receiver, which will be an intriguing position battle to watch. Aside from Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney, no one is guaranteed a roster spot, which leaves four wide open.

Perhaps someone like Hardy, who has experience returning both punts and kickoffs, could find a way to earn a roster spot with a strong camp and preseason.

The Bears also made the signing of tight end Jesse James official on Tuesday.

Bears are signing former Falcons WR Justin Hardy

The Bears are signing former Falcons WR Justin Hardy, who also has experience returning punts and kickoffs.

Just a couple days after trading Anthony Miller to the Houston Texans, the Chicago Bears have added another wide receiver to the roster at the start of training camp.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bears are signing former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Justin Hardy.

Hardy, a former fourth-round pick in 2015, played four seasons with the Falcons. During his time with Atlanta, Hardy totaled 95 catches for 946 yards and nine touchdowns.

Hardy also has experience returning punts and kickoffs with the Falcons, serving primarily as a punt returner. In 2018, Hardy returned 20 punts for 147 yards with a long of 18 yards.

With the uncertainty surrounding kickoff and punt returners for the Bears, Hardy could likely get a chance to compete for the punt returner job. Rookie Dazz Newsome, who is currently on the PUP list as he recovers from a broken collarbone, also has experience returning punts.

Fellow rookie running back Khalil Herbert is the favorite to return kickoffs for Chicago.

Report: Seahawks bring in QB Kyle Sloter and 2 WRs for workouts

ESPN NFL insider Field Yates reported that the Seattle Seahawks brought in Kyle Sloter, Justin Hardy, and Lance Lenoir for workouts.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported Thursday that the Seattle Seahawks recently brought in quarterback Kyle Sloter and wide receivers Lance Lenoir and Justin Hardy for workouts.

Sloter was originally signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2017, but the team waived him before the start of the regular season despite a strong preseason. He spent time with the Vikings and Cardinals, had a brief stint with the Lions, and had a workout with the Bears in mid-August.

Justin Hardy spent his first five seasons with the Falcons, tallying minor production every year before the team let him walk in free agency in 2020. With his exception of seven games in his rookie season, Hardy has never missed a game in his five-year NFL career.

Lance Lenoir is a former Cowboy who has only played eight games in his career and has no offensive stats whatsoever.

None of these players will be expected to be game-changing contributors, but they could be signed for depth purposes. Time will tell if any of them will be wearing blue and green for the 2020 season.
