Titans safety Julius Wood suspended six games without pay

Tennessee Titans safety Julius Wood was suspended by the NFL for six games without pay for violating the league’s substance policy

The Tennessee Titans picked up safety Julius Wood off of waivers on August 28, 2024. He initially signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, but was waived on August 27th as part of 53-man roster cuts. The Titans picked him up the next day, and he’s remained part of the active roster.

Today, though, all of that changes as Wood has been suspended by the NFL for six games without pay for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.

This means Woods is done for the season, he will miss the final four games of 2024 and the first two games of 2025.

In nine games this season, Woods has just two tackles (one solo). That’s it, that’s his whole stat line. The loss of Woods doesn’t necessarily have a huge impact on the Titans’ defense, except that the secondary is already depleted. L’Jarius Sneed is out, Chidobe Awuzie is working his way back, and Quandre Diggs is out.

Losing Woods leaves the Titans with just three safeties, so there will be a lot of moving parts in the secondary while Dennard Wilson figures out how to move forward.

Titans’ play the ‘jersey’ numbers game

New faces, new numbers; the Tennessee Titans announce jersey number changes heading into the regular season.

The Tennessee Titans have made a few changes since their initial 53-man roster was announced. They have claimed players from waivers and added players to the practice squad. In addition, some players have changed their jersey numbers heading into the regular season.

Newly acquired linebacker Ernest Jones is the most notable. The team hopes the veteran solidifies the spot alongside Kenneth Murray Jr., who will continue to wear the No. 53 he wore during the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.

After being claimed on waivers, former Houston Texans pass rusher Ali Gaye will wear No. 59, and former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Julius Wood will have No. 24 on his jersey. The Titans were awarded former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. off waivers on Thursday, but his number has not been released.

The Titans also announced a number of changes for some players already on the roster. Defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson, the No. 94, safety Quandre Diggs  No. 28, outside linebacker Khalid Duke No. 47 and defensive lineman Isaiah Iton No. 95.

With the season opener a little over a week away, stay tuned for any and all roster updates.

Pair of Cowboys DBs claimed off waivers, headed to AFC

From @ToddBrock24f7: Eric Scott Jr. and Julius Wood both flashed with their preseason play but failed to survive roster cuts. Now they’re on new 53-man rosters.

As NFL teams look to finalize their rosters for the 2024 season, many clubs are scouring the week’s cut lists to do so.

The Cowboys have seen two of their promising defensive back prospects claimed off waivers by AFC opponents ahead of Wednesday’s midday deadline.

Cornerback Eric Scott Jr., a sixth-round draft pick just last year out of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded to the Kansas City Chiefs. While he didn’t appear in any games for Dallas as a rookie, he did have a productive preseason, logging an interception versus the Rams and showing flashes during training camp with multiple pass breakups in practice.

Safety Julius Wood has been claimed by the Tennessee Titans. Wood joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina this spring. Wood also impressed during the three exhibition contests, notching a pair of picks and recording 11 tackles.

As waiver wire pickups, Scott and Wood will go immediately to the 53-man rosters for their new teams. The Chiefs and Titans will each have to make a corresponding roster move- cut a player who survived Tuesday’s releases- in order to make room.

The Cowboys were not awarded any players via waivers; it was not immediately known if they submitted any claims.

Several of the players initially released by Dallas– including Josh Ball, Jalen Cropper, Malik Davis, and Carl Lawson- were brought back after they officially cleared waivers for a spot on the Cowboys’ 2024 practice squad.

Titans awarded DE Ali Gaye and DB Julius Wood off waivers

The Titans were awarded two players from the waiver wire on Wednesday, adding DE Ali Gaye and DB Julius Wood to the roster.

Every NFL team had until 12 p.m. EDT on Wednesday to solidify their practice squads and make waiver wire claims. That deadline has since passed, and while we’re still waiting on the final practice squad list, we have learned that the Tennessee Titans claimed two players from the waiver wire: Defensive end Ali Gaye and defensive back Julius Wood.

Gaye comes to Tennessee from the Houston Texans. Born in Gambia, Gaye came to the United States when he was 12. He attended LSU, where he recorded 32 tackles (9.5 for a loss), two sacks, and six passes defensed en route to being named second-team All-Southeastern Conference in his only season with the team. His one season in Houston was with the practice squad as an undrafted free agent.

Julius Wood signed with the Dallas Cowboys on May 9, 2024, as an undrafted free agent. He attended East Carolina University, where he led his team in tackles in 2022 and 2023 with 87 and 86, respectively.

The Titans still need to solidify their defensive depth. Their starting lineup is solid, but if any one of them gets injured, there’s not much to draw from.

In claiming these two players from waivers, the Titans must release two players they kept yesterday.

UPDATE: The Titans waived OLB Rashad Weaver and cut TE Nick Vannett to offset the additions of Gaye and Wood.

Watch: Cowboys’ young DBs secure 2nd, 3rd INTs vs Rams

Dallas has three interceptions on the game, keeping things close despite offensive difficulties.

Go head and give assistant head coach Al Harris his flowers right now. Even when he’s forced to trot out a secondary under a brand new defensive coordinator and without his top three cornerbacks and top safeties, his troop is still all about that action.

The Dallas Cowboys were known as turnover machines under Dan Quinn, leading the league in forced turnover in both 2021 and 2022. While yes, it’s just the preseason and they were facing Stetson Bennett the entire game, but the secondary isn’t missing out on their opportunities. After Markquese Bell dropped a pick on the opening drive, he made up for it the next time out. Following that, the club had two more forced picks, letting the world know that mistakes will still be penalized under Mike Zimmer.

Eric Scott closed out the first half by picking off Bennett, keeping the Rams off the board and the score tied at six. UDFA rookie safety Julius Wood did similar, squashing a late third-quarter drive in similar fashion.

Scott had been having a rough game, but turned things around when he moved into the throwing lane undetected by Bennett.

Wood’s play was a bit more difficult, having to drive on the errant pass to force the turnover.

Dallas has been unable to capitalize on the three turnovers, however. Twice they turned it over on downs and the other time the half expiring on them.
