Two Sixers legends named to Philadelphia sports Mount Rushmore

Two Philadelphia 76ers legends have been named to the Philadelphia sports Mount Rushmore.

To be on a city’s Mount Rushmore of sports, one has to be more than exceptional in the game. They have to be terrific in every sense of the word and be able to put the team above themselves more often than not.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a number of candidates to be on the Philadelphia sports Mount Rushmore. Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Moses Malone, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley and plenty of others have stepped up to the plate and done a lot for the city.

SportingNews put together its Mount Rushmore for Philadelphia and two Sixers legends made up for half of the mountain:

They had plenty of help. Dropping Dimes …

They had plenty of help. Dropping Dimes has an advisory board backed by big names in sports, media and basketball. Among them are Bob Costas, Reggie Miller, George McGinnis, Julius Erving, Myles Turner, Peter Vecsey and Bob Netolicky. “They all came together,” Tarter said. “It was kind of a labor of love.”

On this date: Julius Erving puts memorable move on Lakers

On May 11, 1980, the Lakers got a front-row seat for one of Julius Erving’s greatest moves ever.

The 1980 NBA Finals was a memorable championship series that pitted league MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a sensational rookie named Magic Johnson against Philadelphia 76ers superstar Julius Erving, who was then the game’s most exciting and popular player.

The Los Angeles Lakers were considered underdogs going into the series, but behind Abdul-Jabbar’s dominance, they won two of the first three games.

In Game 4, the Sixers looked to fight back at The Spectrum in Philadelphia.

Abdul-Jabbar was held to 11-of-27 shooting, and although Johnson had an outstanding game with 28 points, nine assists and nine rebounds, it wasn’t enough.

Although Erving’s stats (23 points) were modest, he received plenty of help. But when the game was being decided in the fourth quarter, Dr. J took things into his own hands.

At one point, he went baseline, but he encountered Abdul-Jabbar, so he extended his arm behind the backboard, then brought it back in front of it and converted a most memorable layup.

The Sixers won the game, 105-102, and tied the series, but L.A. had the last laugh. Johnson had his own memorable moment by turning in a dominant Game 6 to lead the Lakers to the NBA championship.

Sixers legend Julius Erving reveals how Joel Embiid impresses him most

Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius Erving reveals what impresses him the most about star big man Joel Embiid.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has taken big steps as a player in the 2021-22 season. He has developed as a leader out on the floor. He has improved his game as a scorer. And he has taken better care of his body, so he can be out there for his team more often.

Embiid’s stellar play is why he is in the running to win the MVP award, and he is catching the respect of everybody around the league. There isn’t a lot the opposition can do on the floor to stop him.

Sixers legend Julius Erving sat down with Bryan Kalbrosky over at For The Win and said this about Embiid:

I love Joel and I love watching him become the player he has become. Moses Malone was a finished product two months into his pro career. It’s taken Joel a little longer, but he’s going down that same path where he has just become that dominant force. He has added a touch of finesse to it, too. Because he shoots 3-pointers and he shoots turnaround jumpers on the baseline. He’s put himself in a position where he is unstoppable unless you send a second or third player over. But he is smart enough to give up the ball then.

It remains to be seen whether Embiid will win the award. Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is having a pretty historic season in the Mile High City himself, but the Sixers will gladly trade the MVP award for a deep playoff run.

As you watch this season, are there any teams or players catching your attention? Julius Erving: Yeah, Memphis, man. I think Ja Morant is going to be a future Hall of Famer. He can easily be a Hall of Famer and maybe even an MVP. I think he’s in the discussion already. You have Nikola Jokic. You’ve got Joel in there. Luka Doncic. You have Giannis. You have Ja. Those are my top five guys right now in terms of the things required to be an MVP. Steph Curry was there before he got hurt. Then there is Devin Booker. Don’t forget Devin Booker! Don’t sleep on him because his team has the best record in the league, and part of the criteria is team success.

Julius Erving: ‘Ja Morant is going to be a future Hall of Famer’

You were a Coca-Cola shareholder and …

You were a Coca-Cola shareholder and owned a bottling plant franchise. That wasn’t common for basketball players in the 1980s. How did that begin? Julius Erving: Not just basketball players but athletes, period. The doors weren’t open, particularly for black athletes. But I was very fortunate to meet an individual named J. Bruce Llewellyn, a New York businessman who owned the Fedco grocery stores. It was a multi-million dollar business at a time when you didn’t see a lot of minorities be successful like that. In the 1980s, he invited me to be a part of an acquisition of a bottling franchise, which covered Philadelphia and New Jersey and Delaware. We held on to it until around 2005, then we sold it back to Coca-Cola, so that was a win. That lasted longer than my career because my career was only sixteen years and this was longer.
