Florida wing hits transfer portal after NCAA grants extra year of eligibility

Florida wing Julian Rishwain missed most of last season with an injury, so the NCAA is giving him an extra year of eligibility.

The NCAA has granted Florida wing Julian Rishwain a sixth year of college eligibility, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, and he’ll enter the transfer portal after spending a year in Gainesville.

Rishwain played eight games for the Gators as a graduate student. He finished the year with 13 points on 4-for-11 shooting, 14 rebounds and six assists. All but one of his attempts were from three-point range. He made one of two free throws at the line.

A long history with Florida head coach Todd Golden brought Rishwain to Gainesville, but he’ll look to get some more playing time in his final year of eligibility. Rishwain was a major contributor at San Francisco under Golden but saw his minutes wane after he left. He also put up big numbers at Boston College as a freshman in 2019.

Rishwain is the third Gator to hit the transfer portal this cycle, following guard Riley Kugel and forward Aleks Szymczyk. Kugel has already committed to Kansas.

Florida Gators SG Julian Rishwain cleared for season opener

The Florida Gators open its season against the Loyola Greyhounds on Monday night and transfer SG Rishwain has been cleared for action.

Finally, the Florida Gators basketball season is upon us.

The Orange and Blue are ready to lace up and take to the hardwood to start a brand new year. Florida is hosting the Loyola Greyhounds at the O’Dome on Monday night and they’ll have a key player returning to the lineup.

Senior transfer [autotag]Julian Rishwain[/autotag] was cleared to play on Thursday afternoon after going through an offseason of rehab in his right knee. The shooting guard tore his ACL back in January.

Rishwain stated that he feels more than ready to play on Monday night.

“I’m feeling like I’m a go for Monday,” Rishwain said. “I felt great out there tonight. The recovery process was long but I did it at 150 percent and I feel like I made up some time to come back. Duke Werner, our [trainer], thought I’d come back a little later but I think I made great time to get back in time for the start of the season.”

Rishwain transferred from San Francisco over the offseason and participated in the Orange and Blue scrimmage game Thursday night, giving him the clear sign that he’s ready to go.

The transfer will be getting a fresh start with Florida but with a familiar face at head coach. Todd Golden was in charge of San Francisco when Rishwain transferred to the program in 2020.

Tipoff between the Florida Gators and Loyola Greyhounds is set for 8 p.m. EST and will broadcast on SEC Network+.

Florida basketball adds transfer guard from Todd Golden’s old school

Former San Francisco guard Julian Rishwain is reuniting with his old coach, Todd Golden, in Gainesville.

Todd Golden is bringing one of his old San Francisco players to Gainesville.

Florida announced the signing of transfer guard Julian Rishwain on Friday, which came as somewhat of a surprise to the fan base. Rishwain spent three years at San Francisco University, two of which were under Golden before he took the Florida job.

He scored 652 points as a Don, but most of his playing time came off the bench (107 career games). An ACL tear ended his 2022-23 campaign early and will keep him out through the summer. He could even miss the first few games of the season. Rishwain is a depth addition, so there’s no need to rush him back.

“Julian was an integral part of our NCAA tournament team at San Francisco,” Golden said. “He’s an efficient shot-maker who had some of his best games against top competition. He has been a part of successful teams and has a great understanding of what it takes to win.”

Florida is now down to one open scholarship spot on the roster following the additions of Rishwain and former UC Riverside guard Zyon Pullin. Iona transfer Walter Clayton Jr. and sophomore returner Denzel Aberdeen make up the rest of the true backcourt, as Will Richard and Riley Kugel operate as wings.
