Joshua Dobbs signs with Cleveland

Former Vols’ quarterback Joshua Dobbs signs with Cleveland.

Former Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs has signed to return with Cleveland.

Dobbs and Cleveland agreed to a one-year deal worth $2 million.

Dobbs was on the Browns’ roster for 11 games during the 2022 season. He did not appear in a regular-season game with Cleveland.

The former Vol was released by the Browns last season after quarterback Deshaun Watson returned from a 12-week suspension.

After being released, Dobbs joined Detroit’s practice squad before signing with Tennessee. He made two starts with the Titans.

Dobbs, a fourth-round draft pick by Pittsburgh in 2017, played for the Steelers from 2017-19. He then played for Jacksonville in 2019 before returning to Pittsburgh from 2020-21.

Dobbs played for the Vols from 2013-16 under head coach Buch Jones.

Titans offseason preview at QB: Will Ryan Tannehill stay?

In our first offseason preview, we take a look at the Titans’ quarterback situation and make a prediction for what the team will do at the position this offseason.

The Tennessee Titans have no shortage of big decisions to make this offseason, with perhaps the biggest of the bunch coming at quarterback.

While we grew a new level of appreciation for Ryan Tannehill as we watched the Titans struggle even worse when he wasn’t under center, that doesn’t erase the reality that the veteran signal-caller has failed to show he can put the Titans over the top to a Super Bowl.

As a result, Tennessee might be looking to move on from Tannehill, especially now that there’s a new general manager in town.

However, finding an upgrade to replace him will not be an easy task, as the options out there are limited and most are lateral moves at best. Of course, Tennessee could also draft their quarterback of the future, but that’s no guarantee, either.

In our offseason preview at quarterback, we’ll take a look at the Titans’ current situation, their potential out-of-house options, and then we’ll make a prediction for what will happen at the position this offseason.

Predicting the fates of Titans’ pending free agents: Offense

A look at the Titans’ pending free agents on offense and a prediction for what will happen with each.

After making predictions for the fates of the Tennessee Titans’ pending free agents on defense, we’re now moving to the offensive side of the ball and making predictions for Tennessee’s pending free agents on offense.

Tennessee has a grand total of 34 pending free agents, with 15 of them coming from the offense. We’ve also included pending free agents on special teams, which is why you’ll find 16 players on this list.

After a dreadful year on offense in 2022, the Titans need wholesale changes. That starts upfront on the offensive line, and extends to wide receiver, two positions Tennessee struggled mightily at last season.

While their starting signal-caller from 2022, Ryan Tannehill, is under contract, the Titans have to decide if they’re moving forward with the veteran, or if they’ll be making a change there, also.

For now, let’s just focus on the offensive players who are not under contract going into the 2023 offseason, and we’ll make a prediction for what happens with each.

Titans’ Malik Willis: ‘I think I progressed a whole bunch’

Titans QB Malik Willis: ‘I think I progressed a whole bunch.’

Depending on who you ask, there is either still hope for Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis to become the team’s starter, or there isn’t.

One thing is for certain: after what we saw from the rookie this past year, the team cannot blindly depend on Willis to be the guy in 2023 if they truly intend on competing next season.

We all knew Willis was going to take at least a year to develop, but it was no doubt disheartening to see how much more the offense struggled with him starting, especially as compared to Joshua Dobbs, which was the most damning thing.

We did see flashes from the Liberty product, but not enough to get really excited about. As a result, it’s hard to say Willis progressed much, and some would say he didn’t progress at all.

However, Willis believes he progressed “a whole bunch” in 2022 because of what he was able to learn and the experience he gained via reps, both in games and at practice.

“You can say what you want to, but it’s my first year in the NFL — I think I progressed a whole bunch,” Willis said, according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “You may not think so, but I learned a lot. So just having that film and those reps. I’d never been under center before I got to the NFL. I got over 1,000 reps of being under center [in games and practices] and that is very helpful. That is what it is about, repetition and building that muscle memory.”

Despite the 23-year-old’s confidence in his amount of progression, he is not shy about admitting his struggles on the field. Until he shows better there, Willis will have no shortage of doubters.

“Nobody is perfect. So, you just always have to learn from whatever mistakes you make,” Willis said. “You see guys making mistakes that have been playing quarterback for 10 years. I have been playing quarterback for a year [in the NFL]. So, it is understanding to learn from those mistakes and not get too high or too low.”

With all the hype surrounding Willis’ arrival in Nashville, it’s easy to forget the fact that he was always going to be a project, which is one important piece of context here.

So, thanks to an injury to Ryan Tannehill, the Titans were forced to send their young, raw quarterback out on the field before he was ready, and he had to play with a supporting cast (and play-caller) that wasn’t even close to good enough to set him up for success.

Are we really that surprised he struggled, and did so more than a signal-caller who, despite not having any starting experience, had six more years of development in the NFL?

Now, that’s not to say the supporting cast is the only reason Willis struggled, or that he’ll end up being the franchise quarterback we all hope, but giving up on him entirely at this early stage is premature.

Looking ahead to 2023, the expectation should be for Willis to be the backup to a veteran starter (Ryan Tannehill or someone else), and the Titans should have him compete for that job with a veteran, perhaps Dobbs.

In the process, hope that he shows he’s capable of more and becomes the future starting option for the franchise. If not, at least it was only a third-round pick.

Josh Dobbs ‘very optimistic’ about returning to Titans in 2023

Josh Dobbs is definitely a fan of a reunion with the Titans in 2023, and the feeling should be mutual.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Josh Dobbs nearly played the role of savior for the team in 2022, but unfortunately he fell just short in the Week 18 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite the result, there was a lot to appreciate about Dobbs, who gave Titans fans a glimmer of hope at the end of the season after he proved to be an upgrade over rookie Malik Willis.

And considering he was with the team only a few weeks — and just eight days when he made his first start with the Titans, which also happened to be the first of his career — made his showing even more impressive.

“It’s good to get out there and play,” Dobbs said, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “I’ve always known the type of player that I am, and can be. Just to be out there and have the opportunity to do that [was nice].,, Of course, we all want to win every time we step on the field, and it stings when you don’t. But to be able to go out there and play and play well, it is definitely satisfying.”

After showing he has the chops to be a solid backup, the Titans should be interested in reuniting with him in 2023 to compete for the same role, something he’d likely do against Willis.

Dobbs, who went to college at the University of Tennessee, is definitely on board with sticking in Nashville next season and is even ” very optimistic” about his chances.

“I’ve enjoyed [my time here], and I’ve had a lot of fun, Dobbs said. “I also feel comfortable. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the guys, being around the team. As we all know, I love Tennessee. Hopefully it works out. Obviously, offseason, free agency, it gets crazy. But I would love to be back here.

“I’ve had great conversations with the coaching staff, the front office. There’s a lot of situations, a lot of moving parts that go on with it. I’ll be patient, but I’m very optimistic about it.”

When asked about Dobbs’ future with the team, head coach Mike Vrabel certainly sounded like someone who would be interested in his services.

“I certainly would have to have a conversation,” Vrabel said. “I enjoyed having him here. I think he made an impact in a short amount of time. We will have those conversations and then we will see where we end up.”

Titans’ pending free agents going into 2023 offseason

The Titans have a total of 34 pending free agents going into the 2023 offseason.

The Tennessee Titans will have a lot of tough decisions to make during the 2023 offseason, not the least of which what to do with the 34 pending free agents the team currently has.

Making the job of retaining those free agents — and bringing in more to improve the team — more difficult is the fact that the Titans are going into the offseason over the salary cap at $18.5 million, per Over the Cap.

Of course, the Titans will make the necessary cuts and whatnot to get back under, but how much remains to be seen.

Before we get to the Titans’ list of pending free agents, here’s a look at the types of free agents there are, and their definitions, per NFL.com:

Unrestricted free agent (UFA): Any player with four or more accrued seasons and an expired contract; free to negotiate and sign with any team.

Restricted free agent (RFA): A player with three accrued seasons and an expired contract. RFAs are free to negotiate and sign with any team, but their original team can offer them one of various qualifying offers (“tenders”) that come with the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation. If the tender is withdrawn by a team, the RFA becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Exclusive rights free agent (ERFA): Any player with fewer than three accrued seasons and an expired contract. If his original team offers him a one-year contract at the league minimum (based on his credited seasons), the player cannot negotiate with other teams.

With that out of the way, the Titans’ list of pending free agents going into the 2023 offseason, per Over the Cap (note: all players are unrestricted free agents unless otherwise noted with “RFA” or “ERFA”).

Joshua Dobbs makes second NFL start at Jacksonville

Former Vol Joshua Dobbs makes second NFL start at Jacksonville.

Former Vols’ quarterback Joshua Dobbs made his second NFL start Saturday for the Tennessee Titans.

Jacksonville defeated Tennessee, 20-16, at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dobbs completed 20-of-29 passing attempts, totaling 179 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He recorded 32 rushing yards on five attempts.

Dobbs fumbled during the second half.

With the victory, Jacksonville clinched the AFC South division championship.

Tennessee concluded its 2022 campaign with seven consecutive losses.

Dobbs played for three teams this season, beginning the campaign with Cleveland. He was released by the Browns when Deshaun Watson returned from suspension.

He was signed by Detroit’s practice squad and then with Tennessee.

Titans’ winners and losers from season-ending loss to Jaguars

Chig finished his rookie season strong with an impressive touchdown reception in Week 18.

The Tennessee Titans’ long, frustrating season has finally come to an end, and now the franchise will turn its attention to the offseason, where there are so many questions to answer.

What a roller coaster ride it was, from the A.J. Brown trade back at the 2022 NFL draft, to a surprising 7-3 record and a comfortable division lead, to the firing of Jon Robinson and subsequent completion of one of the more epic collapses in league history.

Where the Titans need to improve is crystal clear, but how they go about improving in those areas, and if they can be successful in doing so, remains to be seen.

But before we start looking ahead to what will no doubt be an interesting offseason filled with change (at least I hope), let’s see who emerged from Saturday night’s loss as winners or losers.

Titans will start Joshua Dobbs at Jacksonville

The Titans will start former Vol Joshua Dobbs at Jacksonville.

Former Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs will start the regular-season finale for the Titans Saturday.

Dobbs made his first NFL start during Tennessee’s Week 17 loss to Dallas.

Saturday’s contest at Jacksonville will be played for the AFC South division championship.

Tennessee enters the game with a 7-9 record and is in the midst of a six-game losing streak. The Jaguars are 8-8 and have won four straight contests.

Kickoff is slated for 8:15 p.m. EST at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. ESPN will televise the matchup.

Dobbs completed 20-of-29 passing attempts, totaling 232 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He recorded 12 rushing yards on three attempts.

Dobbs has played for three teams this season. He began the 2022 campaign with Cleveland and was waived after Deshaun Watson returned from suspension. Dobbs was then signed to Detroit’s practice squad before being signed by Tennessee.

AFC South standings: It all comes down to Week 18

It all comes down to this: the AFC South title will go to the winner of Titans-Jaguars in Week 18.

The Tennessee Titans suffered their sixth-straight loss on Thursday night in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys, but despite their downward spiral continuing, Tennessee still has a chance to make the playoffs in Week 18.

After winning their fourth-straight game on Sunday in convincing fashion over the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars are now one game better than Tennessee record-wise.

However, with a win, the Titans would even their record with the Jags but would have the superior conference record, thus giving them the division. Jacksonville just needs to win or tie to send Tennessee packing.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8)
  2. Tennessee Titans (7-9)
  3. Indianapolis Colts (4-11-1)
  4. Houston Texans (2-13-1)

If the Titans manage to go into Jacksonville with Joshua Dobbs and win this game, they’d become the first team in NFL history to make the playoffs after going 0-4 or worse in December. The Titans were 0-5 in the month.

Also, with the Titans and Jaguars having suffered six- and five-game losing streaks, respectively, the winner will be just the eighth in NFL history to make the playoffs despite having losing streaks of that length in a season.

As far as draft positioning is concerned, the winner will get a selection no earlier than 19th, while the loser could finish with a pick at or near the top 10.

On Saturday night, the NFL revealed that the crucial showdown for the AFC South will take place on Saturday night, with kickoff set for 7:15 p.m. CST.
