Former Bengals DL signs with Ravens in free agency

A former Bengals player goes elsewhere in the AFC North.

Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Josh Tupou has landed elsewhere in the AFC North, signing with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.

Tupou was initially projected as a guy the team could bring back in free agency this offseason after his steady work as a rotational nose tackle.

That was an idea that only gained more traction after the team surprised by losing DJ Reader in free agency, only adding to the spot with Sheldon Rankins.

Instead, the Bengals seem headed for a slight change in approach up front.

Tupou went undrafted in 2017 and played in Cincinnati through the 2017 season and could now line up across from them during the regular season.

The Cincinnati Bengals have a serious strength along the interior of the defensive line.

Josh Tupou is quietly an underrated part of that thanks to his long-term quality run-stuffing ability. Here’s a quick profile as we keep counting down to the regular season.

Experience: 6 years (UDFA, 2017)

Age: 29

College:  Colorado

2021 PFF Grade: 56.4

Numbers to Know: Played in 11 games in 2022 on 26.3 percent of defensive snaps

Resume and Outlook: Tupou is a core piece of the defense and that doesn’t figure to change in 2023. A fantastic undrafted success story, he had problems with injuries last season, but he’s a valuable part of a rotation that  boosts depth and enables certain subpackages to excel.

Chidobe Awuzie and Josh Tupou repping CU Buffs in Super Bowl LVI

Two defensive players and a front office member are repping the Buffs in Super Bowl LVI

If you’re a Buffaloes fan looking for a rooting interest in Sunday’s Super Bowl LVI, consider the Cincinnati Bengals. The Cinderella team of the 2022 playoffs holds two fromer CU Buffs on its roster and another in the front office.

Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who was a member of Colorado’s stellar Pac-12 South winning secondary in 2016, started 14 games for the Bengals this season and another three in the playoffs. After spending his previous four NFL seasons in Dallas, Awuzie will now have a legitimate chance to hoist the Lombardi in his first year with the Bengals.

Josh Tupou also played his final collegiate season with the Buffs in 2016 and was an All Pac-12 honorable mention that year. Now in his fourth season with Cincinnati (he opted out of 2020), the 6-foot-3, 345-pound defensive tackle has recently struggled with knee issues and played only five snaps in the NFC Divisional Round game against Tennessee. He has been practicing in lead-up to the Super Bowl, however.

Awuzie and Tupou would become the 64th and 65th former CU players, respectively, to play in the Super Bowl.

Another ex-Buff, Duke Tobin, who was a backup QB for Bill McCartney in the early 1990s, is also with the Bengals as their director of player personnel.

Yes, Denver Bronco great Von Miller winning another ring with the LA Rams would be cool, but it’s hard to root against three forever Buffs with Cincinnati.

Report: Josh Tupou informs Bengals he’ll opt-out of season

Josh Tupou is the first opt-out for the Cincinnati Bengals.

[jwplayer bWm0OUCp-ThvAeFxT]

Cincinnati Bengals nose tackle Josh Tupou will opt-out of the 2020 season, accoridng to a new report.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news Friday.

Tupou quietly had a very good season over 16 games in 2019, earning a 73.8 PFF grade as a key piece of the run defense inside. The move comes in the wake of the Bengals waiving Ryan Glasgow, another interior piece.

With Glasgow and now Tupou gone, the Bengals could be on the market for more interior help behind Geno Atkins and D.J. Reader. Renell Wren could see an uptick in play and the team otherwise has some interesting undrafted projects like Tyler Clark and Trey Dishon.

This is the first COVID-19 related opt-out for the Bengals. Players have until the first week of August to notify teams of their decision to do so.
