Vols’ captain Josh Shetler recaps Tennessee’s performance against Ohio State.

No. 6 Ohio State (2-0) defeated No. 17 Tennessee (0-1), 12-10, Saturday at Tennessee Rugby Park.

The contest kicked off Tennessee’s 2022 regular season.

Tennessee entered its contest with the Buckeyes having not lost a game in 15s competition since Nov. 23, 2019. The Vols won the 2021 national championship.

Following the Vols’ season-opening contest against Ohio State, Tennessee captain Josh Shetler recapped the match.

“From a captains perspective, I can’t be prouder of the effort and toughness we played with,” Shetler told Vols Wire. “Lots of new guys in new positions and adjustments had to be made. Overall, it’s a good starting place for us to build on. We’re back to work this week in preparation for Kennesaw State coming up in a few weeks.”

Tennessee’s next game is at Kennesaw State Oct. 1. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. EDT.

Tennessee announces team captains ahead of the Ohio State game.

No. 17 Tennessee (0-0) will kick off its regular-season schedule Saturday at Tennessee Rugby Park against No. 6 Ohio State (1-0).

Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. EDT.

Ohio State opened its 2022 regular season on Sept. 2, defeating No. 18 Notre Dame, 39-14.

Ahead of Saturday’s top 25 contest, Tennessee announced its 2022 team captains. Greg Giangiulio and Josh Shetler were named captains for the 2022 season.

Tennessee enters regular-season play having not lost a game in 15s competition since Nov. 23, 2019. Tennessee won the 2021 USA Rugby Division I national championship.

2022 Tennessee rugby schedule

The 2022 season will be Tennessee’s first under head coach Scott Tungay.

Tungay was hired as the Vols’ head coach Aug. 19.

2022 Major League Rugby draft preview: Tennessee’s Josh Shetler

The 2022 Major League Rugby draft will take place Thursday, consisting of three rounds and 13 picks per round.

The first hour of the 2022 MLR draft will be televised on FS2 at 7 p.m. EDT. Following the first hour, The Rugby Network will provide coverage.

Senior center Josh Shetler is one of 174 draft prospects listed by Major League Rugby.

Shetler discussed the upcoming draft with Vols Wire. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior mentioned he will play for Tennessee in 2022 regardless of being drafted or has a free agent opportunity.

Shetler took part in the Wisconsin combine ahead of the MLR draft.

2022 Gamecock Invitational: Tennessee rugby undefeated in 7s competition

Tennessee competed in 7s competition at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday.

The Vols finished 5-0.

Following the Gamecock Invitational, Tennessee junior fullback Josh Shetler discussed the Vols’ performance.

“We got back to work and knew we had to turn on the pressure this weekend,” Shetler told Vols Wire. “We got the numbers we needed. Through a great couple of days of training the past two weeks, after South Bend, things are clicking for us.

“We are using the early losses as our motivator. We get back to work this week to prepare for SCRC’s at Middle Tennessee State on April 23-24.”

Tennessee competed in the Fighting Irish 7s Invitational March 26 hosted by Notre Dame.

The Vols traveled with only nine players and competed in 29-degree snow conditions.

Tennessee defeated Miami University, 24-0, kicking off at 9:22 a.m. EDT. The Vols lost its second match, 29-0, to Marian. Michigan State defeated Tennessee, 17-0, in game No. 3, while Wheeling was victorious against the Vols, 20-5.

The Vols won the 2021 national championship in 15s competition. Tennessee (11-0) outscored its opponents, 373-127, and recorded three shutouts in 2021.

Tennessee’s 15s 2022 fall schedule is slated to begin Aug. 27 with its annual UT Old Boys Weekend. The complete 2022 fall schedule has not been released.

The Fighting Irish 7s Invitational took place March 26 at Stinson Rugby Field in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Tennessee competed in 7s competition.

The Vols traveled with only nine players and competed in 29-degree snow conditions.

“Super disappointing weekend of our first 7s games since 2019,” Shetler told Vols Wire. “We traveled with nine players due to injuries across the whole team. Kickoff was at 9:22 a.m. EDT with a temperature of 29 degrees, with snow falling.

“We can make excuses all we want. We get back to work this weekend and looking forward to a better showing at the Gamecock Invitation on April 9.”
