Josh Sapp always wanted to be a Clemson Tiger.

After being offered by his dream school last Thursday, it was only natural to assume his next course of action would be to commit. Sapp, the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp, announced his verbal pledge to the Tigers on Tuesday evening.

He chose Clemson over schools like App State and Georgia State.

“Clemson has always been a dream school of mine and it just feels like I’m at home when I’m there and everything about it is just great,” Sapp told The Clemson Insider regarding his decision to commit to Clemson. “It was a no-brainer for me. It just felt right.”

For Sapp, this day was a long time coming.

Obviously, the fact that he’s a legacy recruit holds some weight, but he earned this offer on his own accord. Just ask his head coach at Greenville High School, Greg Porter.

“Even though his father graduated from there, Patrick Sapp,” Porter said. “He did this himself. He put in the work during the offseason. He put the work in on the field, the classroom. He put himself in this position to have options and I’m very proud that he just trusted the process.”

Porter and Sapp will tell you that from the get-go, Clemson was very honest and open with Josh. Sure, it helps that Clemson offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tony Elliott is close with his father, but this was a very transparent recruitment process.

“Clemson was very upfront with him,” Porter said. “I think the relationship that they built throughout the process made this an easy decision for him. He waited patiently.”

Dating back to his time at the Dabo Swinney Camp, Sapp had been on Clemson’s radar for quite some time and an offer seemed imminent. Though, he had to trust the process and see how the remaining cards may fall.

Those cards were West Forsyth (Cumming, Ga.) four-star tight end Oscar Delp and IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) five-star tight end Jaleel Skinner, who committed to the University of Georgia and Alabama, respectively, over the past two weeks.

That opened the door for that aforementioned Clemson offer for Sapp.

Before getting on the plane for Clemson’s road game against Syracuse this past Friday, Swinney phoned Sapp with some good news. Sapp knew the phone call was coming. It wasn’t a shock. Clemson’s head coach told him at the Boston College game that he would be calling soon.

Swinney stuck to his word.

That fateful day came and Sapp’s dream was finally realized.

“Really it’s just a dream come true,” Sapp told TCI. “I was so excited to hear the news. I’ve been working hard this whole year for this and just listening to my dad and my coaches just telling me to trust the process and God blessed me with a great opportunity.”

Sapp joins his teammate, four-star offensive tackle Collin Sadler, as Clemson continues to stack up a talented recruiting class in 2022. Though Sapp is ranked as the No. 84 tight end in the 2022 class by the 247Sports Composite, this is a class that has told you time after time to not pay attention to the rankings.

Clemson offers are not just handed out, they’re earned.

Sapp remained patient, stayed the course and earned every bit of that offer. It’s why he’ll be donning the Purple and Orange for years to come.

Josh Sapp got the offer he was waiting for.

The legacy recruit and son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker, Patrick Sapp, announced his offer from the Tigers on social media Thursday.

After a day filled with congratulations and celebrations, Sapp caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding a day he’ll never forget.

“The offer means a lot to me,” Sapp told TCI. “Clemson has always been a dream school of mine since I was a kid and it’s just amazing that I have the opportunity to go play football there.”

Sapp says he’s thinking about making a commitment decision next week. Tuesday, Oct. 19, could be a possibility, but he’s not exactly sure when just yet. With all signs pointing to Sapp verbally pledging to Clemson, he indicated the obvious, that the Tigers are currently among his top choices.

So, you may be asking yourself, how did he find out about the big offer?

“I found out [Thursday] when I got out of school,” he said. “Coach Swinney told me last week at the [Boston College] game that he was going to call me sometime in the next week and he called me [Thursday] while they were on the way to the airport and told me they officially offered me a full ride.”

Anyone who knows Sapp knows how hard he worked to earn this offer. He was diligent about putting his head down, working hard and being patient. His persistence truly paid off.

“Really it’s just a dream come true,” Sapp added. “I was so excited to hear the news. I’ve been working hard this whole year for this and just listening to my dad and my coaches just telling me to trust the process and God blessed me with a great opportunity.”

Sapp’s head coach talks Clemson offer: ‘We’re absolutely flabbergasted’

Josh Sapp, a legacy recruit from Greenville (S.C.), announced his long-awaited Clemson offer via social media Thursday.

The Clemson Insider caught up with the Class of 2022 tight end’s head coach, Greg Porter, on Thursday afternoon.

“We’re absolutely flabbergasted. We’re so very excited for Josh,” Porter told The Clemson Insider. “He’s the blueprint for being patient in the recruitment process.”

Sapp let his coaching staff at Greenville know during lunch. They all celebrated and Sapp’s father, former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp, had an opportunity to be there for the celebrations and congratulations that occurred.

“When the opportunity came, Clemson kept their word to him as a young man and I think that was the winning factor for the kid,” he said. “They stuck to their word. Josh had other options and other offers, but his desire was to play for Clemson and he got his heart’s desire.”

As TCI has hinted at before, this was the offer that Sapp had been waiting on. Clemson offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tony Elliott was very transparent with Sapp throughout the process and how he needed to remain patient, that his time would come.

It was Thursday.

“Clemson was very upfront with him,” Porter said. “I think the relationship that they built throughout the process made this an easy decision for him. He waited patiently…and we’re excited for Greenville High School to be able to have two football players in our program in the same season to verbally commit to Clemson.”

While it’s assumed that Sapp will verbally pledge to Clemson in the coming days, it’s not something that he’s announced just yet. He had been waiting for the offer from his father’s alma mater for quite some time now.

“Yes,” Porter said when asked by TCI if Sapp’s plan is to go to Clemson. “Even though his father graduated from there, Patrick Sapp. He did this himself. He put in the work during the offseason. He put the work in on the field, the classroom. He put himself in this position to have options and I’m very proud that he just trusted the process.”

Porter saw first-hand just how hard Sapp worked towards picking up this offer.

And it didn’t happen overnight.

It was players like Sapp who have helped lay the foundation for a Greenville team that’s gotten off to a 6-1 start to the season.

“When I came in 2019, I saw a guy, unsure whether he wanted to commit to football or not,” Porter said. “He played basketball as well. There was nothing to see as far as from football, what we were gonna get out of him.

“Once he made the commitment within himself that this was what he really wanted to do and be great at it, his work ethic really changed. His grades changed. One of the biggest things I’ve seen, during the summer he would come in during 6 a.m. and workout. Doing extremely hard workouts before we started our 8:30 a.m. workout…that’s the type of foundation of kids you build the program with. That’s why we’re where we are right now in this program because we have young men. who have that type of attitude and that work ethic.”

Porter knows the ins and outs of Sapp’s game, so how does he think he’ll be utilized by the Tigers and how he fits into Clemson’s offense?

“I think Josh presents a diversity of opportunities for Clemson,” he said. “Not only is he an excellent catcher, but he’s also a blocker. He’s athletic and Clemson uses their H-back tight ends in their offensive sets with Coach Elliott. I think it’s a good opportunity for him to mix in because that’s what we do with him here.

“It’s not going to be anything new to him as far as the terminology and everything will be new. But he has a sense of what’s to come and what’s expected in their offensive system.”

It was a long time coming, but this legacy recruit finally picked up the offer he had been waiting for.

Greenville (S.C.) 2022 tight end Josh Sapp reported an offer from the Tigers on Thursday afternoon.

Sapp, the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp, ranks as the No. 86 tight end and No. 28 prospect in the state of South Carolina in the 2022 class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Now that Clemson has officially offered him, Sapp could have the opportunity of a lifetime to follow in the footsteps of his father.

That’s not something he takes lightly.

“It definitely would be a great thing to do,” Sapp told TCI following his experience at Clemson’s All In Cookout. “I know my dad would feel really good and that’s something I would definitely love to do and it would even add more of a push to me to be even better at the school and try to accomplish more things than he did.”

As Sapp’s recruitment dwindles down, he told TCI last month that his recruitment was down to three schools: App State, Georgia State, and of course, Clemson.

An offer certainly changes that dynamic.

Son of former Tiger, NFL player talks Clemson game visit

The Clemson Insider checked back in with a Class of 2022 legacy recruit who was back on campus for Clemson’s game against Boston College on Saturday night in The Valley.

Greenville (S.C.) three-star tight end Josh Sapp, the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp, was among high priority recruits that were in attendance for the Tigers.

Sapp has long been on Clemson offensive coordinator/tight end coach Tony Elliott’s radar as a viable option at tight end in the 2022 class.

“I really had a great time,” Sapp told TCI. “I enjoyed meeting and seeing most of the coaches at the game and also it was a great experience getting to be up on the hill with the players.”

Sapp has been to plenty of Clemson games, but the experience was a tad different.

“This definitely was a different and better feel coming as a recruit,” he said. “I enjoyed the game a lot.”

As far as an offer is concerned, Sapp indicated to TCI that he hasn’t heard anything new. Things are still seemingly the same as all eyes are on Cumming (Ga.) West Forsyth four-star tight end Oscar Delp, who will make his commitment Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Until then Sapp continues to better his relationship with Elliott, who remains close with his father.

“It was good seeing him again,” Sapp said. “Me, him and my dad were talking a lot about how Clemson and the campus use to be back in the day.”

What did Sapp hear from Elliott, Dabo Swinney and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter on Saturday?

“We were mostly talking about how my season has been going and they were telling me to keep up the good work and finish off for a great season,” he said.

Highly touted prospects headed to Death Valley for Clemson-Boston College game

Clemson will again play host to some top prospects for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. game against Boston College in Death Valley.

Here are some of the bigger names The Clemson Insider has confirmed as planned visitors for the Clemson-BC game:

A couple of headliners among the recruits expected to be in attendance are Thomspon (Alabaster, Ala.) five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods, Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star defensive back Caleb Downs and Auburn (Ala.) High School four-star center Bradyn Joiner.

Woods is the No. 4 defensive lineman and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, which also tabs Downs as the No. 2 safety. Rivals ranks Joiner as the No. 1 center in the Class of 2023.

“They care for each player like they’re family,” Downs said of Clemson to TCI last month. “Everything you do, they want you to excel. They want to be there to help you with your ups and downs. It’s just a family there.”

A big-time receiver from North Carolina is slated to be on hand for Saturday’s game as well in Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) four-star Christian Hamilton, the No. 15 wideout and No. 93 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham recently came up to Harrisburg to watch Hamilton play, now the highly-touted wide receiver prospect is returning the favor this weekend.

“What I’ve been hearing from Coach Grisham is that he thinks I’m an amazing player,” Hamilton told TCI. “He says just be patient with him because he doesn’t just throw out offers. He says (Clemson is) really, really close to offering me and also he wants me to keep in touch with him weekly.”

Among other notable Class of 2023 recruits on Clemson’s anticipated guestlist for Saturday’s contest are two Life Christain Academy (Colonial Heights, Va.) products in three-star offensive lineman Joshua Miller and four-star cornerback Antonio Cotman, Jr.

Miller picked up a Clemson offer back on Sept. 2 and is looking forward to getting back down to Tiger Town for Saturday’s marquee ACC matchup.

“I got a little bit of experience when I was there (in Charlotte), but it not really being a home game, I wasn’t able to get the full experience,” Miller told TCI earlier this month. “So, I’m excited to get down there to Clemson and actually see what an actual game day is like at their home stadium.”

As for Miller’s teammate and good friend, Cotman, he’s been feeling the love from Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and is looking forward to seeing how the vibe is in Death Valley at Memorial Stadium, he said.

Some other marquee names that will be in attendance from the 2023 class include Sumter (S.C.) 2023 four-star defensive lineman Monteque Rhames, Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) 2023 running back Jarvis Green and Pendleton (S.C.) 2023 offensive tackle, Aidan Leigh, who is the younger brother of Clemson true freshman offensive lineman Tristan Leigh.

Another name from the 2023 class that recently informed TCI of his incoming arrival is Katy (Tex.) running back Seth Davis, who was invited to the Clemson-BC game by Tigers’ running backs coach C.J. Spiller.

Last but certainly not least is Greenville (S.C.) 2022 tight end Josh Sapp, who is the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp. TCI caught up with the Clemson target earlier this month on stop No. 1 during this season’s edition of The Tour of Champions.

He continues to build a relationship with Clemson offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tony Elliott.

“Really just keeping in touch and checking up on each other,” Sapp said. “He and my dad have known each other for a while, so I kind of grew up knowing. It’s really just a cool relationship with him.”

Tour of Champions: Son of former Tiger has ‘cool relationship’ with Elliott

GREENVILLE, S.C. —  The Clemson Insider kicked off our Tour of Champions for the 2021 season Friday night.

Stop No. 1?

The legendary Sirrine Stadium to see the Greenville Raiders host the J.L. Main Patriots.

TCI was on site to see two players, in particular, Clemson commit Colin Sadler and legacy recruit Josh Sapp, the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp.

Josh caught two touchdown passes in a 31-2 victory. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but Sapp came away with touchdown receptions of 19 and 73 yards. Including one on a double-pass from fellow wide receiver Tyler Brown.

That’s two big games in a row for Sapp, who recorded seven receptions with 228 receiving yards in a touchdown in last week’s 24-21 win over Mauldin.

“It’s been good,” Sapp said. “I’ve been working for it.”

Sapp even played a little bit of defensive end too and recorded a tackle. But most of that attention, especially from Clemson, has come at the tight end position, where he continues to produce.

Sapp was invited by Clemson to the team’s marquee matchup against Georgia at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. While the Tigers weren’t able to get the win with Sapp and his father in attendance, it was still a great experience nonetheless.

“It was great,” Sapp said. “Learned a lot of football, watching the tight ends. It was good overall. A good experience”

Sapp added that he liked the combination of route-running and blocking from Clemson’s tight ends — Braden Galloway and Davis Allen — against Georgia.

He texted with Clemson offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tony Elliott after the game. The two continue to develop a close relationship.

“Really just keeping in touch and checking up on each other,” Sapp said. “He and my dad have known each other for a while, so I kind of grew up knowing. It’s really just a cool relationship with him.”

Sapp’s Clemson’s connections don’t stop short at his father, he’s also teammates with a Clemson commit in Sadler.

“That’s a great teammate. He kills me in the weight room trying to work with him,” Sapp said. “We’re definitely close. We’ve been clicking, especially over the summer, just grinding in the weight room with each other.”

In a recent conversation with TCI, Sadler said he believed that Sapp will end up at Clemson if the Tigers do eventually offer.

Sapp couldn’t help but crack a smile.

While he hasn’t heard anything about a potential offer as of late, Sapp said that he’s just “trusting the process.” He told TCI that he’s broken his recruitment down to three schools — App State, Georgia State, and, of course, Clemson.

Being that he’s less than an hour away from Memorial Stadium, Sapp will try to make his way back to The Valley for a game-day visit this season.

Greenville head coach: Clemson is the standard

For a local high school coach, there’s something obvious about Clemson’s football program.

Greg Porter, the head coach of Greenville High School, put it this way.

“They’re the standard,” he told The Clemson Insider.

Porter attended Clemson’s All In Cookout last month, in part because of two of his own players — Collin Sadler and Josh Sapp.

Sadler is a part of the Tigers’ 2022 recruiting class, while Sapp is still aiming for that coveted Clemson offer.

In any event, Porter was there to support his players, but he enjoyed himself beyond his expectations.

“As you can see from the pictures, I had a great time,” Porter said. “It was absolutely one of the most organized events that I’ve been a part of and had such a family feeling of welcoming those young men and their families. The coaches are all genuine. It was a positive experience, it was really good.”

Porter had a unique moment where he sat down with Dabo Swinney’s wife, Kathleen, and the two sat and ate together for about 45 minutes.

“I was just totally fascinated and blown away that she would even take the time and sit down and talk with me,” he said.

Porter didn’t take that for granted. He knows the way parents of recruits and commits would’ve been impacted if they were in his situation as well.

“There were so many other people, so many other pieces that were moving at the cookout,” Porter added. “The fact that she took a moment, sat down and just talked with me, I appreciated it. That meant a lot to me.”

Of course, Sadler and Sapp were the reason Porter was there, and yet he was still blown away by the way he was treated.

Sadler committed to Clemson back on Nov. 2, 2020. He ranks as the No. 15 offensive tackle and No. 4 prospect from The Palmetto State in the Class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

What is Clemson getting in a player like Sadler?

“They’re getting a committed young man on and off the field,” Porter said. “He definitely fits the culture of Clemson. He comes in with a mindset that he wants to contribute right away. A lot of kids think like that anyway, but I think he’s putting in the work. He’s going to put in the work. He knows that he’s got to earn his stripes.”

From a character standpoint, Clemson is getting someone who is going to be “All In.”

“A guy who’s coming in not arrogant, a guy who’s coming in who wants to continue the tradition that Clemson has and that’s winning National Championships,” Porter said of Sadler. “He’s never been a problem. He’s loyal. None of these things I’m making up. These are the qualities that he has exhibited over the years being at Greenville High School.”

For Sapp, it’s a little bit different. Even though he’s a legacy recruit, he doesn’t hold that Clemson offer just yet.  Still, he was invited to the cookout as Clemson and specifically Tigers’ offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Tony Elliott continue to express interest in him.

Sapp, of course, is the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp.

“I think that’s the motivating thing for Josh Sapp. He doesn’t mind paving the way of his own steps,” Porter said. “What’s funny to me is that he’s too young to even know that his dad had a similar path, quarterback, outside linebacker, changing positions. Josh, coming up in our program, he’s the same way.

“I don’t want to say like a swiss [army] knife, but he can play so many positions. It would be great to see him target just one and become great at one being able to be that versatile tight end/wide receiver, guy. H-back for Clemson, from my perspective, is the perfect position for him.”

Being that he’s their head coach, Porter had an opportunity to enjoy himself, but he also took a step back and watched his players and some of their future teammates enjoy themselves.

“This class, the recruiting class, watching them on stage during the activities they had for the kids, they seemed to have a nice little tight bond already,” he said. “I think that’s what makes Clemson so special, that they take that class that they’re recruiting and allow them to become a family, teaching them to become a family before they get to Clemson.”

Porter explained just how rare and unique that is.

Once these recruits are officially enrolled in Tiger Town, they already know the expectations. There is already a relationship there and chemistry is so vital and important to a team’s success.

He would know.

“It’s stronger than it has been in the past,” Porter said of his relationship with Clemson’s coaches. “In 2014, when I won a State Championship at Hillcrest, Clemson was the only school that allowed me an opportunity to come to be a guest speaker at the coaching clinic. I’m always in debt to them for that.”

Porter had an opportunity to speak with Brent Venables. He coached the Clemson defensive coordinator/linebackers coach’s son, Tyler, at the Shrine Bowl.

“I try not to be a nuance because I figure everyone’s always asking him for stuff,” he said, “But I just keep it business-wise when I talk to them about the kids and I probably do need to really work on the relationship aspect of it because they’ve invited me to come up there so many times during the season,” “I’ll be caught up so much in my own season, that I don’t come up as much as I should to the games and things like that.

“I think from this experience with Collin and Josh Sapp, talking to Coach Elliott, talking to [Safeties] Coach [Mickey] Conn, talking to Brent Venables, they make you feel so welcome. I just felt different this time. I felt so different this time that I even took an actual picture. I put on the jersey and took one myself.”

Porter never played for Clemson, but for once in his life and this one moment, he got a chance to put on that jersey.

He didn’t pass it up.

“They made me feel comfortable that I could step out of myself and do something like that,” Porter added.
