Singer on how seamless the negotiations for Nikola Jokic’s max extension were: I saw Nuggets governor Josh Kroenke in Vegas, and I asked him that question. He said, “It’s an honor, honestly.” When the governor is eager to pay $270 million to a player, you know the negotiations were seamless. This was as easy of a negotiation as it gets.

At the start of free agency, the Nuggets’ top decision-maker was en route to Sombor to secure a commitment from Nikola Jokic on what would become the largest contract in NBA history: five years for $270 million, with a player option for the final year. Keeping Jokic all but assured the Nuggets will remain competitive for five more years, keeping the window open for the franchise’s first title.

“Honestly, it’s an honor,” Nuggets governor Josh Kroenke told The Denver Post. “To present a contract like that obviously speaks to the player, a two-time MVP, but I always talk about the person when you talk about Nikola. When you’re giving out a contract like that, you’re obviously rewarding the player, but you’re keeping the right mind of who the person is that you’re rewarding it to because you’re betting on the future. And we’ll bet on the future all day long with Nikola Jokic.”

“The hard part about where I’m at right now is we’ve done a great job. Tim and Coach Malone and Mr. K and Josh, all of our best players getting us to this point, and now you’re inside the 10-yard line and the job becomes really, really hard,” Booth said. “But on the other side, what’s really easy is I know what Coach Malone likes. I have a feeling or a vision for the kind of guys, Nikola, Jamal or Michael would like to play with, and it just happens to be in line with my philosophy anyway.”

The Denver Nuggets have signed two-time MVP center Nikola Jokić to a multiyear contract extension, KSE Vice Chairman Josh Kroenke and General Manager Calvin Booth announced today. He was the first player in NBA history to average 25+ points, 13+ rebounds and 6+ assists for an entire season and he also became the first player in NBA history to record at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a single season. Joker became the first Nugget in franchise history to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player after his stellar 2020-21 campaign earned him that distinction.
