Ravens QB Tyler Huntley shares thoughts on QB Josh Johnson

Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley shared his thoughts on quarterback Josh Johnson

The Baltimore Ravens are currently dealing with an injury to their star quarterback in Lamar Jackson, who hurt his ankle in Week 14. It is currently unclear if Jackson will be able to play in Week 15, but if he can’t it will be backup quarterback Tyler Huntley at the helm.

Baltimore signed quarterback Josh Johnson from the New York Jets practice squad earlier in the week, seemingly for some insurance in the event that Jackson can’t suit up. Huntley gave his thoughts on the Johsnon signing, saying that it’s nice to have a veteran player in the room who has plenty of experience at the NFL level.

“I think it’s cool that he’s been in the league a long time, and it feels good just to have a ‘veteran, veteran’ in the room. He’ll tell you a little bit different … He’s back learning another playbook, so it’s cool to see how fast he can learn it. I think he learned it pretty good today; he was answering a lot of questions. So, I just like that he’s in the room with us now.”

Ravens HC John Harbaugh gives thoughts on signing of QB Josh Johnson

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh gave his thoughts on the signing of quarterback Josh Johnson

The Baltimore Ravens are currently dealing with an injury to their star quarterback in Lamar Jackson, who left their 24-22 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 14 with an ankle injury. Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said that Jackson avoided a high-ankle sprain, but even so it is still unclear if the fourth-year signal caller will be able to suit up in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers.

On Wednesday, the Ravens signed quarterback Josh Johnson off of the New York Jets’ practice squad. Harbaugh weighed in on the signing, and was very excited about Johnson joining the team.

“I’ve known Josh [Johnson] since he played for my brother at the University of San Diego, many moons ago. That shows you what a credit it is to Josh’s career. He’s played in this league for a long time, and he’s very reliable. It was great having him here in 2016. He’s one of the best guys to be around and you want to be around. Whenever he’s played, he’s played well. So, to bring him in here, I think all things considered, the potential to need him this week, the potential for the rest of the season with all the things you’re alluding to [about increased COVID cases], it just makes sense to bring him in. He was excited. [Executive vice president and general manager] Eric [DeCosta] and I talked about it this morning, and [director of player personnel] George Kokinis walked in 15 minutes later saying he’s in his car driving down here already. So, that was exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing him. … Will he be here in time for practice? It depends on traffic.”

As Harbaugh noted, Johnson spent time with Baltimore in 2016 but never made it past final cutdown day. Johnson will be an insurance policy incase Jackson can’t suit up on Sunday, and he should also bring a veteran presence to the Ravens’ quarterback room.

Jets lose QB Josh Johnson to Ravens, Mike White remains out

The Jets lost Josh Johnson to the Ravens. Meanwhile, Mike White is now dealing with a non-COVID illness.

The Jets lost a quarterback on Wednesday.

Josh Johnson left New York’s practice squad to sign with the Ravens. Baltimore is in need of QB insurance with Lamar Jackson ailing. Johnson played in three games for the Jets this season after being called up after Zach Wilson’s knee injury and when Mike White and Joe Flacco were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Johnson had a career day in Week 9 against the Colts after White exited with an elbow injury in the first quarter. Johnson finished with 317 yards and three passing touchdowns in the 41-27 loss.

This is the second time Johnson has joined the Ravens after a brief stint in 2016.

“Really excited for him and his opportunity,” Robert Saleh said Wednesday. “He deserves it. One of the elite pros in this league.”

Meanwhile, White remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list. He is now dealing with a non-COVID illness and hasn’t passed one of the tests required to be activated yet, per Saleh.

Saleh added that the Jets would consider bringing in another quarterback for the practice squad.

Saleh provided some injury-related updates for the depleted Jets as well. Running back Michael Carter (ankle) will play in Week 15 after spending the past three weeks on injured reserve. Running back Tevin Coleman, cornerback Michael Carter II, tight end Tyler Kroft, defensive end Bryce Huff and tight end Trevon Wesco will all return to practice as well. Left tackle George Fant (knee), defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (knee) and cornerback Isaiah Dunn (non-COVID illness) won’t practice Wednesday but will likely play in Week 15 against the Dolphins.

Saleh didn’t have any update on left tackle Mekhi Becton, who hasn’t played since Week 1 after dislocating his knee.

Ravens sign QB to active roster on Wednesday

The Ravens signed a quarterback to their active roster on Wednesday

The Baltimore Ravens saw star quarterback Lamar Jackson leave their Week 14 loss to the Cleveland Browns with an ankle injury. He was carted to the locker room and deemed questionable to return, but was subsequently ruled out around halftime.

While Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said that Jackson avoided a high ankle sprain, it is currently unclear if the quarterback will be able to suit up in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers. With that in mind, the Ravens signed quarterback Josh Johnson to their active roster from the New York Jets’ practice squad, seemingly as insurance incase Jackson isn’t able to play.

Johnson has had quite the football journey, as Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun highlighted each stop that the 35-year-old has made during his career.

The veteran had a brief stint with Baltimore back in 2016, as he was with the team during training camp and the preseason. He has accumulated 1,966 passing yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions over the course of his career. If Jackson can’t play, Johnson could be the backup to Tyler Huntley on Sunday, but the team also has Chris Streveler on their practice squad. Regardless, the move looks to be an insurance one for the Ravens, as they now have plenty of players available at the quarterback position.

Foley Fatukasi, C.J. Mosley among unsung 6 unsung heroes in Jets’ win over Texans

Players like Foley Fatukasi and C.J. Mosley didn’t necessarily star against the Texans, but they were among the unsung heroes in Week 12.

The Jets broke back into the win column for the first time in nearly a month in Week 12, downing the Texans by a final score of 21-14.

New York’s offensive performance against Houston was not pretty, but it did enough to win with Jeff Ulbrich’s defense stepping up and slowing down Tyrod Taylor and company. The Texans didn’t score in the second half and totaled just 202 yards of offense, most of which came over the first 30 minutes of play.

Players on both sides of the ball shined for the Jets, though not everyone received equal credit for fending off a Texans team that upset the AFC South-leading Titans the previous weekend. Here, we’ll take a look at some unsung heroes who flew under the radar in New York’s Week 12 win.

Seahawks elevate 2 players from practice squad for Washington game

The Seattle Seahawks have elevated two players from their practice squad ahead of tonight’s game against the Washington Football Team.

After announcing four roster moves on Saturday evening, the Seattle Seahawks have elevated two players from their practice squad ahead of tonight’s game against the Washington Football Team.

Here’s what you need to know about the team’s two latest transactions.

Seahawks juggling running backs as injuries continue to mount

The Seattle Seahawks are juggling running backs as injuries continue to mount; both Rashaad Penny and Travis ruled out for Week 12.

The Seattle Seahawks will be without two more running backs on Monday night against Washington with both Rashaad Penny (hamstring) and Travis Homer (calf) officially ruled out of the contest.

Coach Pete Carroll was asked how he was planning to deal with the run game now down another couple of backs.

“We will mix as we need to, we are going with Alex (Collins),” Carroll said on Saturday.” Alex has been the guy that we have been leading with and he’s ready to go. DeeJay (Dallas) is primed and ready, so you will see what happens in the next day or so as we round it out.”

However, Collins has been battling a groin injury of his own, although that shouldn’t be a problem in Washington.

He seems to be fine, he talks like he’s okay,” Carroll explained. “We always give the lead running back some respect in terms of how we work him and all and we are doing that now with him, but he’s ready to go.”

Carroll did acknowledge the possibility of bringing Josh Johnson up from the practice squad to add additional depth.

Seattle and the Washington Football Team are set to square off Monday night at 5:15 p.m. PT.

Texans’ Tyrod Taylor has good friends in the Jets’ QB room

Houston Texans quarterback Tyrod Taylor says that he has some good friends in the New York Jets QB room in Joe Flacco and Josh Johnson.

When the Houston Texans take on the New York Jets in Week 12 at NRG Stadium, it will be a reunion of sorts for quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

The New York Jets currently roster two of Taylor’s former teammates throughout his 11-year NFL career in quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Josh Johnson.

Flacco more than likely won’t beat COVID protocol with two consecutive negative tests within a 24-hour period to make the trip to Houston, but Johnson will be available to backup rookie Zach Wilson.

“I haven’t talked to ‘Flacc’ (Flacco),” Taylor said. “I’m going to shoot him a text. It’s unfortunate he’s going through the COVID protocol now. Eventually, obviously we were going to talk.”

Taylor was teammates with Flacco with the Baltimore Ravens from 2011-14. The two were members of the Ravens’ 2012 team, the last from Baltimore to win the Super Bowl.

Johnson was a backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills in 2015, Taylor’s lone Pro Bowl season, and someone Taylor characterizes as, “a good friend of mine as well”

“I’m pretty sure I’ll talk to him at the game,” said Taylor.

If nothing else, Flacco at least will get a text from Taylor.

Said Taylor: “If Flacco doesn’t travel, which I’m not updated on how that goes, then I’ll definitely shoot him a text. I’ll probably shoot him a text tomorrow on Thanksgiving.”

The Texans and Jets are equally 2-8 and are seeking to establish cultures under rookie coaches David Culley and Robert Saleh. Whoever loses the matchup can take comfort in the consolation that their draft position will improve.

Explaining Jets’ roster logistics after Joe Flacco, Mike White land on COVID-19 list

QBs Joe Flacco & Mike White landed on the COVID-19 list Tuesday. Here’s how that impacts the Jets’ roster from a procedural standpoint:

The Jets’ quarterback room took another twist Tuesday, as Joe Flacco and Mike White were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Both were immediately ruled out for Week 12 after White tested positive for the virus. Flacco is an unvaccinated close contact.

Zach Wilson was named the Week 12 starter independent of the COVID-19 news. He was medically cleared Monday night after missing the previous four games with a knee injury.

Josh Johnson will be protected and likely promoted from the practice squad for the third time to back up Wilson, per The AP’s Dennis Waszak Jr. Normally, practice squad players would need to be signed to the 53-man roster if they’ve been elevated twice, but the Jets can promote Johnson again since this is a COVID-19 situation, according to Waszak Jr.

As for Flacco and White, their return timetable is unclear. It depends on White’s vaccination status, which is currently unknown, and Flacco’s test results following his mandatory five-day isolation period, per the NFL’s 2021 COVID-19 protocols.

Because White tested positive, his return is more difficult than Flacco’s, especially if White is unvaccinated.

If White is vaccinated and asymptomatic, he’ll need two negative COVID-19 tests at least 24 hours apart to return to the team. Denzel Mims, who is vaccinated, hasn’t played the past two weeks because he failed to meet the two conditions necessary to return.

If White is unvaccinated, he will automatically be isolated from the team for 10 days before he can be allowed back, and only if he’s asymptomatic. In that case, the earliest he could return would be Friday, Dec. 3.

Flacco is unvaccinated, but since he is only designated as a close contact of White’s, he is only subject to a five-day quarantine period. This is why he was immediately ruled out after being placed on the list. He’ll continue to be tested daily once he returns from isolation but could be active for Week 13 if he clears the protocols.

The Jets will likely add a third quarterback to the roster or the practice squad in case injury befalls Wilson or Johnson while Flacco and White are out.

Why Joe Flacco, not Josh Johnson, will be Jets’ backup QB in Week 10

The Jets chose Joe Flacco as Mike White’s backup a week after Josh Johnson threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns. Here’s why:

Josh Johnson proved in Week 9 that he’s still a capable NFL quarterback.

The veteran threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in relief of Mike White in the Jets’ loss to the Colts. It was the first time in his 12-year career that Johnson threw for over 300 yards or three scores.

But despite Johnson’s solid performance, the Jets chose Joe Flacco to be White’s backup in Week 10 while Zach Wilson continues to heal from his knee injury.

This decision wasn’t a slight against Johnson. Rather, the Jets would have had to sign Johnson to the 53-man roster after exhausting both of his automatic practice squad promotions. They understandably didn’t want to keep four quarterbacks on the active roster.

“He’s been elevated from the practice squad twice already and we’re dealing with a whole ton of injuries so being able to get him to the 53, there’s a numbers game,” Robert Saleh said Wednesday. “So it’s basically giving him an out, too.”

It’s an unfortunate result of the Jets trading for Flacco and choosing not to place Wilson on injured reserve in Week 8 following his knee injury in Week 7. Wilson remains active and will run the scout team this week, so there just weren’t enough roster spots left for an extra quarterback. The Jets decided to use their openings to fill other positions after a plethora of injuries.

As Saleh suggested, Johnson can be claimed by any team after the Jets decided not to protect him this week. Johnson showed he can still perform at a high level, so it’s possible he finds a better opportunity elsewhere after falling to fourth on New York’s depth chart.

Saleh refused to say whether Wilson would regain his starting job once he is fully healthy, which opens up a whole new quarterback conversation next week. For now, it’s the White show once again with the veteran Flacco as his backup.
