Josh Giddey told his agent to make sure the Thunder drafted him

Josh Giddey to his agent before the Thunder drafted him: “You’ve got to do everything you can to talk to these guys and get them to draft me.”

Stuck in his room during the G League bubble in February, Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti turned on the film of draft prospect Josh Giddey.

The 6-foot-9 pass-first wing in Australia was dazzling with his dimes, posting triple-doubles, and recording well-rounded averages to the tune of 10.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game.

That time Presti spent in the bubble wasn’t just used on the young Thunder and OKC Blue players. He watched prospect tape, and this offseason, he told the Thunder website that his time in quarantine at the beginning of the bubble gave him a good idea of who Giddey was.

“By the time I left my room I had a pretty good feel for him,” Presti said to reporter Nick Gallo. “That was very helpful because it was just so consistent.”

Months later, that feeling was reciprocated. Early in the pre-draft process, Giddey had his eye on the Thunder. The Australian told Gallo:

“Ever since the pre-draft process started, Oklahoma is where I wanted to be. I said to my agent, ‘You’ve got to do everything you can to talk to these guys and get them to draft me.'”

The Thunder pulled the trigger, using pick No. 6 on Giddey.

Presti cited success of recent draft picks from the NBL when talking about his confidence in making the selection. LaMelo Ball won Rookie of the Year last season and R.J. Hampton made strides after being traded to the Orlando Magic and receiving more consistent playing time.

“That was really helpful actually in our evaluation overall, just knowing the level of that league and the way that Josh was able to impact it,” Presti said.

Giddey traveled across the world to join the NBA and landed where he wanted to be.

“This was a dream situation and my parents are over the moon about it,” he said.

2021 NBA Draft: A complete tracker of every rookie shoe deal

Rookie Wire took a look at the players that have signed endorsement contracts with apparel companies ahead of the 2021-22 season.

With the start of the 2021-22 season approaching, at least a quarter of players drafted in July have inked shoe endorsement contracts with prospective apparel companies.

The endorsement deals are headlined by Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham signing with Nike. The No. 1 overall pick signed what is believed to be the highest-earning shoe deal among all rookie players this year.

Prospects last season signed fewer endorsement contracts with brands due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, apparel companies worked fast this year to sign some of the top prospects with Nike and Adidas doing the majority of the work.

Rookie Wire took a look at those players that have signed endorsement contracts to this point and which companies they will be joining ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Note: The tracker will be updated as new deals are announced

Thunder rookie Josh Giddey signs shoe endorsement deal with Nike

Giddey becomes the eighth rookie to sign with Nike this year, joining Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Kuminga among others.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey has reportedly signed a multiyear shoe and apparel endorsement contract with Nike, according to Nick DePaula of ESPN.

Giddey becomes the eighth rookie to sign with Nike this year, joining Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Kuminga among others. They join a star-studded roster of athletes, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

The crop of rookie players this year are expected to help Nike usher in their new Greater Than series, wearing player-exclusive models such as the GT Cut, GT Run and GT Jump. It is estimated that 68% of NBA players wear Nike on the court.

Giddey, the sixth overall pick, was limited to just five minutes with the Thunder in the Las Vegas Summer League after suffering an ankle injury. The team opted to be cautious with the injury and did not want to rush him back into action.

Josh Giddey reminisces about participating in Ben Simmons’ basketball camp

Giddey once took part in a basketball camp hosted by Simmons back in Australia in 2017.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey recently reminisced about the time he participated in a basketball camp hosted by fellow Australian and Philadelphia 76ers guard Ben Simmons.

Simmons annually hosts two basketball camps back in Australia in Sydney and Melbourne. The camp gives participants the opportunity to learn and interact with Simmons while also developing on-court skills from coaches and trainers.

Giddey, who was born in Melbourne, has drawn comparisons to Simmons with his ability to lead and get others involved. The 6-foot-9 guard is similar in size to Simmons and is even thought to be a better shooter than Simmons was at this stage of his career.

Of course, Giddey would eventually spend time at the NBA Academy in Australia before playing last season with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League before becoming the sixth overall pick by the Thunder in July.

He often credits Simmons with giving him advice throughout the years so it will be fun to watch the Thunder face the 76ers this season or, perhaps, another team.

Josh Giddey posts old video at Ben Simmons camp

A young Josh Giddey attended a camp led by Sixers star Ben Simmons. He posted a short clip from the 2017 event:

Josh Giddey, part of the NBA’s newest class of athletes, unearthed an old video of himself at the basketball camp of Ben Simmons.

Giddey is one of the unique few players who attended these camps to have reached the NBA. Simmons, who was born in Melbourne, Australia just like Giddey, hosts the camps in their birth town and in Sydney.

The camp has been active since 2017 and hosts 1,400 kids total, according to the website.

Giddey said the video of him on the court was from four years ago, which possibly means that he attended Simmons’ very first basketball camp in Australia.

In fact, the website also shows a picture of players at a camp. It’s unclear what year it was, but there’s a chance a young Giddey is in it.

Giddey is one of three active Australian NBA players who are younger than Simmons, according to Real GM. The other two are Dallas Mavericks wing Josh Green and Philadelphia 76ers guard Matisse Thybulle, a teammate of Simmons.

The two might not be teammates for much longer. The Sixers have reportedly discussing trades that would ship out the Australian star, but nothing has come to avail due to an unwillingness from other teams to meet the high asking price. However, Simmons told the team he will not report to camp, will likely force the Sixers to lower the return value they are seeking and expedite a deal, Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Keith Pompey reported Tuesday.

While one Australian is on joining a brand new team, another may be on the move from his old.

An internal debate: Will the Thunder be competitive this season?

With SGA back, will the Thunder be … good? Competitive? At all? Let’s have a debate about whether they can replicate the first half of the 2021 season.

For weeks now — honestly, months — I’ve had an internal debate: Will the Oklahoma City Thunder be competitive this season?

Logic and recency bias dictate no, but the Thunder had a 20-27 at the end of March and were closer to a play-in spot than the best draft odds. It took effort from the front office to stop Mark Daigneault and Co. from winning.

At the start of a new season, with clear eyes and a full bill of health, will the Thunder be good again? Or were they playing above their level when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was on the court during the first half of the 2021 season?

To attempt to find a conclusion, my optimistic and pessimistic sides are going to have an argument. Kind of like Shea Serrano’s old Good Cop/Bad Cop articles, only less fun and clever because I am not, unfortunately, Shea Serrano.

Let’s argue: Can the Thunder be any good in the 2021-22 season?

Josh Giddey to miss Thunder summer league finale with ankle injury

Giddey finishes summer league by playing only five minutes after suffering a sprained left ankle in his debut on Aug. 8.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey will not play in the team’s Las Vegas Summer League finale on Monday versus the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced.

Giddey will finish summer league by playing only five minutes after suffering a sprained left ankle in his debut on Aug. 8. He has been listed as day-to-day since the injury and has missed the last three games for the Thunder.

The injury was not considered to be serious as the team held him out for precautionary measures. On Saturday, a report surfaced that indicated Giddey could return to play versus the Indiana Pacers but the sixth overall pick was eventually ruled out of that contest.

The injury was certainly a blow to the Thunder and those fans wanting to watch him play in summer league. However, the team played it cautious with the injury and opted not to rush him back into action for their exhibition games.

Josh Giddey, Tre Mann out again for Thunder’s game vs. Pacers

Thunder rookies Josh Giddey and Tre Mann are out against the Pacers on Saturday.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s two top draft picks will be out again when they take on the Indiana Pacers on Saturday evening.

No. 6 overall pick Josh Giddey and No. 18 pick Tre Mann will not play. Giddey suffered an ankle sprain in the first game and has only seen five minutes of court time in summer league. Mann departed the team for personal reasons before the third game.

Summer league head coach Grant Gibbs joins them as inactive. Gibbs is away from the team due to COVID-19 protocol.

The Thunder were coached in the game on Friday night by Kameron Woods.

Oklahoma City is 1-2 so far in summer league. The Thunder beat the Detroit Pistons in the opener but lost to the New Orleans Pelicans and Golden State Warriors in consecutive games.

They will try to pull their record to .500 against the Pacers on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Central time.

Rumor: Thunder rookie Josh Giddey could return to play on Saturday

Giddey has logged just five minutes in summer league after suffering a sprained ankle in his debut with the Thunder.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey could return to play on Saturday versus the Indiana Pacers in the Las Vegas Summer League, according to Liam Santamaria of ESPN Australia.

Giddey has played only five minutes in summer league after suffering a sprained left ankle in his debut with the Thunder on Sunday. He has been listed as day-to-day since the injury and has missed the last two games for the Thunder.

The injury was not considered to be serious as the team held him out for precautionary measures. After sitting each of the past two games, there is a chance Giddey could return to the lineup on Saturday.

The Thunder have two games left in summer league and it appears as though Giddey could return to play in one or both of those contests. The team has been cautious with the injury but it looks like he could be nearing a return to the court.

Josh Giddey ruled out on Wednesday for Thunder due to injury

Thunder rookie Josh Giddey will not play on Wednesday in the Las Vegas Summer League versus the Pelicans.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey will not play on Wednesday night in the Las Vegas Summer League versus the New Orleans Pelicans due to a left ankle sprain, the team announced.

Giddey played just five minutes in his debut with the Thunder on Sunday after suffering the injury versus the Detroit Pistons. He tried to play through the injury but was eventually pulled from the lineup and ruled out of returning to the contest.

The sixth pick registered two points on 1-of-3 shooting from the field prior to exiting the 76-72 win. His lone field goal occurred just seconds into the first quarter.

The Thunder have listed Giddey as day-to-day with the injury, meaning it is likely not too severe. Certainly, the team will be cautious with the injury and not rush Giddey back too soon but it appears as though he could play again before the conclusion of summer league.
