Former Titans DL Josh Evans has passed away at 48

Evans was diagnosed with cancer in 2020.

After a battle with cancer, former Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Josh Evans has passed away at the age of 48.

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk released this statement on the unfortunate news:

“I am so sad to hear that our Titans family lost Josh Evans today. His fight against cancer was one of courage and strength and his teammates were by his side encouraging him throughout that fight. We will remember his big personality and even bigger smile. We send our condolences to his family and friends in this difficult time.”

Evans played in 71 games for the Houston Oilers/Titans, totaling 14.5 sacks and 79 combined tackles. He was also a starter on the Super Bowl XXXIV team and made a big impact during the playoff run, notching 1.5 sacks and 18 combined tackles.

Evans finished his career with the New York Jets, where he played three seasons before retiring.

Former Titans DT Josh Evans on battling cancer: ‘I am not going to give up’

Josh Evans is asking for prayers as he continues to battle cancer.

Former Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Josh Evans, who was a starter on the franchise’s Super Bowl XXXIV team, is asking for prayers as he battles cancer.

According to David Boclair of Sports Illustrated, Evans was discovered to have tumors on his kidneys, gall bladder, intestines and pancreas back in January. After getting treatment for that, doctors hoped they had removed all of the cancer, but it has now spread to his liver and spine.

Evans isn’t giving up and plans on fighting despite the dire diagnosis, and is asking for prayers as he continues to undergo treatment, according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

“I’ve been scared — I’m scared now,” Evans said in a telephone interview. “I’m fighting hard, man, I promise you that. It ain’t easy. But I’m fighting, and I’m praying I can get through this and I can get myself together. I am not going to give up, regardless of the news I get.

“And I want everybody out there talking to God for me, if they will. Please pray for me. Talk to God for me.”

Evans went undrafted out of Alabama-Birmingham before joining the Houston Oilers as a free agent in 1995.

He played six seasons for the franchise and totaled 1.5 sacks and 18 combined tackles in four playoff games during the Titans’ Super Bowl run.

Evans retired in 2005 after playing the last three seasons of his career with the New York Jets.

Report: Former Titans DT Josh Evans is battling ‘dire cancer diagnosis’

Former Tennessee Titans defensive tackle, Josh Evans, is reportedly battling what is a “dire cancer diagnosis” in Atlanta.

According to Sports Illustrated’s David Boclair, Evans originally had tumors on his kidneys, gall bladder, intestines and pancreas treated earlier this year, but now it appears the cancer has spread to his spine and liver.

Now, the former Tennessee Titans defensive tackle – a starter in Super Bowl XXXIV – is in the fight of his life following a dire cancer diagnosis.

Evans, 47, is at an Atlanta cancer center where doctors determined that the disease, first diagnosed earlier this year, has spread to his spine and liver, according to prominent Titans fan Penny Kennedy, who has remained close to Evans since his playing days.

Originally, tumors were discovered on his kidneys, gall bladder, intestines and pancreas in January. Following treatment, doctors were optimistic that they had removed all of the cancer, Kennedy said.

Evans played in six seasons for the Houston Oilers/Titans during his career after going undrafted out of Alabama-Birmingham and was a starter on the Super Bowl XXXIV team. During the Titans’ playoff run, Evans totaled 18 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks.

After moving on from the Titans following the 2001 season, he went on to play for the New York Jets for three years before retiring in 2005.
