Cordarrelle Patterson sets NFL record with 9th kickoff return for touchdown

Cordarrelle Patterson with a record-setting kickoff return

Kick to Cordarrelle Patterson at your own risk, they told the Chicago Bears and every other team in the NFL.

The Bears didn’t listen on Sunday and 103 yards later the Atlanta Falcons’ returner elite was on his way to the NFL record book.

Patterson surpassed Josh Cribbs and Leon Washington with his ninth career kickoff return for a touchdown.

Those cleats will be on their way to Canton, Ohio, once they stop running.

The Bears have been involved in five of Patterson’s kickoff returns for touchdowns. He returned two while playing for Chicago and burned the Bears three times.

9 former Cleveland Browns are Modern-Era nominees for Pro Football Hall of Fame

9 former Cleveland Browns find themselves on the list of Modern-Era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2023.

The NFL has listed their class of 2023 Modern-Era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and nine former Cleveland Browns have landed on it. It has been a long while since the Browns have had a player inducted into the Hall of Fame, but this year sure feels like a surefire year to celebrate as a pretty popular name is amongst the group.

Young and old, the list of players we will dive into is filled with Cleveland history (both good and bad). Two quarterbacks, a couple of running backs, a wide receiver, two offensive linemen, a linebacker, and a kick returner all make the cut.

We hope one day to see the likes of Nick Chubb, Myles Garrett, and Joel Bitonio on this list down the road. In the meantime, we hit on all nine here and give a brief summation of their time with the Browns.

Seahawks great Kam Chancellor among 129 Hall of Fame nominees for 2023

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 129 modern-era nominees for the class of 2023.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 129 modern-era nominees for the class of 2023. That list will be cut down to 25 in November and the final list of 15 will be revealed in January.

Seahawks greats Shaun Alexander and Kam Chancellor are among the names. Here’s the full list by position.

D’Brickashaw Ferguson among 10 ex-Jets eligible for 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame class

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that 130 modern-era nominees, including 10 former Jets, would be eligible for the Class of 2021.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that 130 Modern-Era nominees are eligible for the Class of 202l. A total of 10 ex-Jets are eligible, headlined by former OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

Retiring following the 2015 season, Ferguson is one of 14 first-year eligible nominees. That list also includes Peyton Manning, Calvin Johnson, Steven Jackson, Charles Tillman and Charles Woodson.

Occupying the left side of the offensive line for over a decade, Ferguson was a model of consistency. Across 10 seasons, Ferguson played in 160 straight games, never missing one. In fact, he played 10,707 out of 10,708 possible snaps, missing just one his entire career.

Another ex-Jet who is eligible is John Abraham, who is one of the best pass-rushers in franchise history. Nearly 15 years after trading him, the Jets haven’t come close to replicating his production off the edge, which included 53.5 sacks in green and white.

James Hasty played in 111 games for Gang Green from 1988-94 at the cornerback position. His career didn’t take off until he moved on to Kansas City, where he earned two Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors.

The remaining seven were footnotes in Jets’ history, but some played a pivotal role in the organization’s success. Alan Faneca, who is known more for his time in Pittsburgh, spent two seasons with Gang Green but helped the team reach the 2009 AFC Championship Game with his play in the trenches.

Nick Lowery finished out his career with Gang Green from 1994-96 after serving as the Chiefs’ primary kicker for 13 seasons. Lorenzo Neal played one season for Gang Green in 1997, starting all 16 games at fullback. Matt Turk punted in the NFL across 16 seasons and was New York’s legman for the 2002 season.

Derrick Mason, one of the better receivers of his generation, was one of the worst free agent signings in Jets history. He complained about the offense and was later demoted to the scout team; his tenure in New York lasted just two months. Josh Cribbs played just one season for the Jets in 2013; he was known more for his return abilities in Cleveland.

Finally, Tim McDonald never suited up for the Jets, but he was on Rex Ryan’s coaching staff as the team’s defensive backs coach from 2013-14.

After a large cutdown process, the Class of 2021 will be announced the day before Super Bowl 55 in Tampa, Florida.

Clay Matthews, Josh Cribbs among many Browns nominated for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Clay Matthews, Josh Cribbs among many Browns nominated for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Will this finally be the year for Browns legend Clay Matthews Jr. to earn enshrinement in Canton? Matthews headlines a large group of players with Cleveland Browns ties in the initial nominations for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and it’s enshrinement class of 2021.

Matthews has been a semifinalist three times, including last year, but has yet to get the gold jacket. He’s the most likely of any of the players with Browns ties to earn the nod in 2021.

Also prominent among the Browns nominated is special teamer extraordinaire Josh Cribbs. While he never found a home at running back or wide receiver, Cribbs made three Pro Bowls as a return man. He ranks third in NFL history in total return yards, kick returns yards and scored 11 TDs. Cribbs was also one of the best special teams coverage men of his era.

Joining Matthews and Cribbs on the list of Browns among the 130 players who made the initial nomination list:

(in alphabetical order)

Lomas Brown – primarily knows for his Pro Bowl-laden career with the Detroit Lions, Brown played left tackle for the expansion 1999 Browns.

Earnest Byner – one of the most electrifying and productive dual-threat RBs of the 1980s, Byner played half of his 14-year career in Cleveland.

Jake Delhomme – the longtime Panthers quarterback went 2-2 as the starter for the Browns in 2010.

Jeff Garcia – The consummate journeyman QB, Garcia started 10 games for Cleveland in 2004. It was the second stop in Garcia’s journey that saw him play for six teams in seven years.

Jamal Lewis – after a great career with the rival Ravens, Lewis finished his impressive RB career with three seasons (2007-2009) in Cleveland. He topped 1,300 yards rushing in his first year with the Browns, the most of any in a season for a Cleveland RB not named Jim Brown until Nick Chubb passed it in 2019.

Eric Metcalf – the slippery runner/receiver/return man spent his first six seasons (1989-1994) with the Browns and quickly earned fan-favorite status for his sashaying style. He made the Pro Bowl twice and first-team All-Pro once in Cleveland.

Willie McGinest – McGinest spent the final three (2006-2008) of his 18 NFL seasons with the Browns after an illustrious career as an outside LB with the Patriots prior to that.

Michael Dean Perry – My personal favorite Browns player ever, Perry played defensive line for Cleveland in his first seven seasons (1988-1994). He made five Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pro squads in those years.

The 7 best Browns players not in the Hall of Fame

Who are the 7 best Cleveland Browns not already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

The Cleveland Browns are well-represented in the Pro Football Hall of Fame down I-77 in Canton. There are 22 Hall of Famers who spent at least one season with the franchise, including founder/coach Paul Brown.

There are several other Browns alums who at least merit a conversation about Hall-of-Fame worthiness. At least one of these players will eventually earn enshrinement, but all are worth discussing. Here are the seven Cleveland Browns not currently in the Hall of Fame that have the best cases for getting in at some point.

It’s almost shameful that Matthews wasn’t part of the centennial class in 2020. He’s widely cited as one of the best players not already in the Hall, and has held that status for several years.

During his 16 seasons in Cleveland (1978-1993), Matthews was a model of consistent excellence. The Browns list Matthews as the team’s career sack leader with 76.5, although some of those were notched before sacks became an official NFL statistic in 1982.

Matthews made four Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team, but he was a player whose impact transcended the traditional statistics. He does have the stats too, however; Matthews led the NFL in total tackles four times and he’s the only player to log at least one 100-tackle season in three separate decades.

Josh Cribbs, Webster Slaughter will be inducted into Browns Legends this fall

Josh Cribbs, Webster Slaughter will be inducted into the Browns Legends this fall

Two of the Cleveland Browns’ most popular players of the last 35 years will be immortalized in the team’s Browns Legends program in 2020. Wide receiver Webster Slaughter and special teams superstar Josh Cribbs will be the next two additions to the prestigious program.

In a press release, owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam revealed the honor for Slaughter and Cribbs.

“It is always special to spend time with and celebrate Browns alumni, and we are incredibly proud to recognize Webster Slaughter and Josh Cribbs — two of our team’s greats that are also exceptional men — as the newest Browns Legends members. We deeply appreciate everything they, along with all of our alumni, have done for the Browns on the field and how they continue to contribute to our team and our community in meaningful ways.”

The iconic Browns players will be honored during a halftime ceremony Sept. 27 when the team hosts the Washington Redskins at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Browns Legends program honors players who played for the team for at least five years, were major contributors and are retired for at least five years. An eight-person selection panel chooses the players who are honored in the program, which began in 2001.
