Incoming UNC wide receiver Jordan Shipp named a Top-100 impact freshman from 2024

A big part of UNC’s offense in the upcoming football season could be one of its incoming freshman wide receivers.

There’s no secret the 2024 college football season is going to look a little different in Chapel Hill.

Drake Maye won’t be slinging the football, Devontez Walker won’t be catching passes and Cedric Gray won’t be leading the linebacking corps

Highlighted by Walker’s departure to the NFL, UNC’s wide receiver group will be in search of a new Number One guy. J.J. Jones (711) led the Tar Heels in receiving yards last season, while Nate McCollum (469) showed flashes of brilliance before Walker gained eligibility.

North Carolina has a couple of talented, incoming freshman receivers in Alex Taylor and Jordan Shipp, who are expected to be major parts of the offense.

It’s Shipp, in particular, whom the media is looking at as a Day One contributor.

Shipp, a 3-time state champion at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC, was recently named a Top-100 Impact True Freshman by 247Sports.

“The Tar Heels exited spring without a proven No. 1 receiver on their roster. There are options to fill that gap, but no real established pecking order with Tez Walker’s absence. That gives Shipp an opportunity to make a Day 1 impact. UNC’s highest-ranked signee in the 2024 class, Shipp entered college as a sound route runner – a skill he’s so good in that it offset sub-par measurables, as far as top-100 prospects go — and showcased that ability during spring ball.”

Shipp’s high school production was a major reason behind Providence Day’s three titles, as he caught 173 passes for 2,934 yards and 37 touchdowns. He’ll look to be a top target for UNC’s starting quarterback, which will come down to either Jacoby Criswell, Conner Harrell and Max Johnson.

Jordan Shipp proves he’ll be a valuable Tar Heel with All-American Bowl performance

If Jordan Shipp’s All-American Bowl performance is an indication of what’s to come on the UNC football team, we’re in for a special treat.

What the UNC football team is losing in star wide receiver Devontez Walker next year, it’s gaining in Providence Day (N.C.) wide receiver Jordan Shipp.

The two main things you need to know about Shipp – he’s a talented wide receiver and he comes from a winning program.

Providence Day boasts arguably North Carolina’s greatest private school football team, winning three straight (and four/past five) NCISAA state championships.

Shipp played a major role in the Chargers’ success, catching 173 passes for 2,934 yards and 37 touchdowns during his high school career.

That talent displayed on the gridiron earned Shipp the opportunity to play in one final high school game – the All-American Bowl.

Let’s just say, Shipp showed out.

“Jordan Shipp was a late arrival to the All-American Bowl, but quickly made his presence felt with a big performance during the joint practice on Day 2,” On3Sports’ Charles Power said. “The North Carolina pledge had multiple touchdowns on the day, flashing his patented strong hands. Shipp is a pure ball winner, excels at finishing through contact and winning in contested situations. He also showed good movement skills and ability to win deep. A productive player on Friday nights, seeing Shipp in this national all-star setting confirmed what we saw from him as a senior. The Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day standout moved into the On300 back in November and certainly looked the part of a blue-chip receiver prospect in San Antonio.”

According to UNC’s official football roster, Shipp enrolled early and is now on campus in Chapel Hill. We know that Carolina head coach Mack Brown is eager to have a receiver of Shipp’s talent on campus.

Shipp has a very real path to extensive playing time, with Nate McCollum being the only senior projected back. No other returning wide receiver, besides McCollum and J.J. Jones, has proven themselves to be a consistent threat on game day.

Three future Tar Heels playing in All-American Bowl today

Jordan Shipp, Ashton Woods and Andrew Rosinski are all coming to play football at UNC next Fall. They’re playing in a big game today.

If you thought this year was a tough one for the UNC football team, next year has the potential to be even more difficult.

The Tar Heels started 2023 off with a 6-0 record and quarterback Drake Maye playing like a Heisman Trophy contender, then lost five out of their final seven games to end a once-promising season.

2024 looked bleak at once, with both Maye and start wide receiver Devontez Walker opting for the NFL Draft, but Carolina hopes to offset those those with a couple transfer portal additions. UNC’s most notable addition is Texas A&M transfer Max Johnson, who once played at LSU and is expected to compete with Conner Harrell for the starting quarterback gig.

There’s also some much-needed, Class of 2024 recruits coming into Chapel Hill next season – three of whom you can watch on TV today.

Starting at 1 p.m. ET, wide receiver Jordan Shipp, offensive tackle Andrew Rosinski and linebacker Ashton Woods are playing in the All-American Bowl.

Woods will be key on the defensive unit, which is expected to be revamped with the recent hiring of defensive coordinator Geoff Collins. Cedric Gray was a mainstay at linebacker over the past three seasons – if he leaves, Woods could slide into a starting role.

Shipp will join what’s expected to be a deep receiving corps, as Walker was the only senior or graduate student. Georgia Tech transfer Nate McCollum, who enjoyed two 100-yard games for the Tar Heels last year, will be expected to take a huge leap in Senior year.

With UNC’s 2023 starting left tackle Diego Pounds recently entering his name in the transfer portal, Rosinski might be the most important recruit of this trio. He’s a 6’5″, 253-lbs. tackle who will only grow as he ages, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him starting for Carolina next season.

Jordan Shipp heading to prestigious high school All-Star football game

Jordan Shipp, a 4-star, 2024 UNC football commit who totaled nearly 3,000 receiving yards in high school, will play in one more game.

The UNC football team has no shortage of offensive firepower, which is evident by this year’s squad and some of the future recruits coming in.

Drake Maye is Top 10 in FBS passing yards, while Omarion Hampton finished the regular season fifth in rushing yards. Both were a major part of why Carolina has eight wins – if it weren’t for a few overall team slip-ups, that pair might’ve led UNC to more.

One of the incoming recruits is a North Carolina native whom UNC has major plans for in its offense. That young man is Jordan Shipp, the 3-time state champion from Providence Day School in Charlotte, who finished his high school career with 2,949 receiving yards and 37 receiving touchdowns.

Shipp gets a chance to play one more high school game in January – the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. EST.

The purpose of this bowl is to showcase some of the country’s top high school talent. Some of the past MVP’s are pretty well-known in the football world – former UCLA quarterback Dante Moore (2023), current Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Bryce Young (2023), Florida quarterback Graham Mertz (2019) and current Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon.

Who knows – will Shipp be this year’s MVP?

Two UNC football commits nab fourth stars On3 Sports’ Top 300 rankings

4-star UNC football commits Jordan Shipp and Jaiden Patterson arrive in Chapel Hill next year. They’re both Top 300 in the On3 rankings.

College football might be coming to a close soon, but it’s never too early to start thinking about your favorite team’s 2024 outlook.

In Chapel Hill, there’s expected to be a good amount of turnover for UNC. It’d be shocking if star quarterback Drake Maye didn’t leave for the NFL Draft, while fans are also calling for defensive coordinator Gene Chizik’s firing.

Regardless of what happens in the future, Carolina should be focused on beating N.C. State for the first time since 2020. The winner will nab its ninth on the season, while also taking third place in the ACC.

There is, however, already some optimism for next season.

Two of UNC’s Class of 2024 commits. safety Jaiden Patterson and wide receiver Jordan Shipp, picked up fourth stars in On3 Sports’ latest football prospect rankings list.

Patterson, who hails from Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Ga., slotted in at 254. He has 69 tackles, 20 deflected passes, four fumble recoveries and three interceptions across two varsity seasons.

Shipp, an in-state product from NCISAA powerhouse Providence Day, came in at 258. He’s helped the Chargers to the past three NCISAA State Championships, recording 2,949 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns over four varsity seasons.

UNC commit Jordan Shipp aiming to become 5-star athlete

Providence Day’s Jordan Shipp, currently a 4-star wide receiver in UNC’s 2024 recruiting class, is working to become a 5-star this season.

The University of North Carolina football team already boasts a ton of talent in its 2024 recruting class.

UNC has 26 players locked down, including 4-starts Zion Ferguson, Davion Gause, Malcolm Ziglar, Tyshun White, Alex Taylor and Jordan Shipp. The Heels were a finalist for 4-star Jonathan Paylor, but he opted to choose that school in red from Raleigh.

One of those 4-star prospects, Providence Day wide receiver Jordan Shipp, is aiming to add another star to his name.

If we’re going off the first game of his senior high school season alone, Shipp is well on the way to that coveted fifth star. Shipp caught 13 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns in Providence Day’s 42-35 win over Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) High School.

Shipp will be catching passes all season from a future collegiate quarterback – 4-star Michigan commit Jadyn Davis, who threw for 499 yards and five touchdowns in the win.

While Shipp certainly wants to add a fifth star next to his name, his main goal will be helping the top-ranked Chargers capture their third-straight NCISAA state championship. Shipp and his teammates will continue that quest on Friday, Aug. 25, when they travel to Asheville High School.

Twitter reacts to UNC landing four-star wideout Jordan Shipp

Twitter reacts to UNC landing a commitment from four-star wide receiver Jordan Shipp.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have officially received a commitment from four-star wide receiver [autotag]Jordan Shipp[/autotag].

Sunday afternoon was a win for UNC fans, with Shipp choosing the Carolina Blue hat over Michigan and NC State during his announcement. The decision occurred at Providence Day high school, where family, friends, teammates, and coaches surrounded Shipp.

Shipp is ranked the 13th-best wide receiver in the state and has become a consistent problem for opposing defenses.

Last season, Shipp racked up 1,088 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 62 receptions. He had two games where he reached the end-zone three times. Arguably his best game came against the Charlotte Cougars, where he finished with ten receptions for 128-yard game to help Providence win 21-20.

The commitment continues Mack Brown’s resume of strong recruiting. UNC is loading up for life after Drake Maye, ensuring the next QB in line has plenty of weapons to choose from.

Unsurprisingly, the decision brought quite a reaction to Twitter as fans discussed the big commitment.

Let us look at how Twitter reacted to UNC landing four-star wide receiver Jordan Shipp.

Michigan football loses out on teammate of Jadyn Davis

Another one who appeared to be in that chose another school.

Michigan football was in the pole position for four-star wide receiver Jordan Shipp, until it wasn’t.

Long were the Wolverines the favorites for the Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day wideout, who is high school teammates with Michigan commits Jadyn Davis and Channing Goodwin. However, Shipp had a strong urge to stay home and play for Mack Brown and North Carolina.

He pledged to the Tar Heels on Sunday. Via On3’s Chad Simmons:

“At one time, Michigan was on top. I got the offer and after I went up there for a visit, Michigan was on top,” Shipp told On3. “It blew me away and they took the lead. I went back to Chapel Hill again though after that, and there was just a different feeling for me there.

…That’s really what it came down to. I can’t explain it, that feeling in Chapel Hill felt like home.”

Who’s next?

Michigan already has the aforementioned Goodwin and four-star WR I’Marion Stewart committed. It appears to be in the driver’s seat for Idaho-based four-star Galton Bair. However, should he commit, he will not arrive on campus until 2026; he plans to go on a two-year mission trip as part of the Latter Day Saints church.

The Wolverines are waiting on Missouri-based five-star Ryan Wingo, who doesn’t plan to decide until the early signing period. Georgia and Texas appear to be his leaders.

Tampa (Florida) Carrollwood Day four-star Bredell Richardson is another option, though the maize and blue haven’t had much recent connection with him.

Michigan football trending to lose out on 2024 wideout it appeared to lead for

Not great.

The past month in recruiting for Michigan football saw what was the No. 1-2 class drop. Now, the Wolverines are No. 5, so it’s not like the maize and blue have plummeted. But with player re-ranks, and, more importantly, missing on targets Michigan appeared to lead for, the 2024 class isn’t quite as special as it once appeared.

The latest is 2024 Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day four-star wide receiver Jordan Shipp. The high school teammate of commits Jadyn Davis and Channing Goodwin appeared to be planning to join the duo in Ann Arbor. However, on the eve of his commitment, Shipp’s 247Sports crystal ball predictions have flipped from Michigan football to North Carolina.

While that’s not as disheartening as losing other recruits that Michigan appeared to have an advantage for — Justin Scott, Aaron Chiles, and others — it’s still a trend-line the Wolverines would like to reverse. Of course, there have been commitments, namely edge rushers Elias Rudolph and Jacob Smith, and Michigan has 26 commitments in 2024, but the program has to be getting antsy with losing players it once appeared in line for.

Michigan football 4-star WR target sets decision date

#Michigan is in good standing here. #GoBlue

Will the whole band be coming to Ann Arbor?

Certainly, that’s the hope for coaches at Schembechler Hall, as Michigan football has commitments from two Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day prospects in the 2024 class in five-star quarterback Jadyn Davis and wide receiver Channing Goodwin. There’s just one more piece of the puzzle that the Wolverines are hoping to add.

Rated the No. 415 player in the country, wide receiver Jordan Shipp visited Michigan officially last weekend, and the Wolverines are hoping that he’ll join his high school teammates in Ann Arbor. If he does, we now know when he’ll make that decision public.

According to Rivals’ Adam Friedman, Shipp will be announcing his commitment on July 16, choosing between Michigan, North Carolina, and NC State.

The Wolverines already have Goodwin and four-star WR I’Marion Stewart in the fold, and hopes to add Shipp and Idaho four-star Gatlin Bair (who wouldn’t make it to campus for two years as he’ll be going on a mission trip) to the class.

Shipp currently has three 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions all indicating he’ll end up in maize and blue when he makes his choice. It wouldn’t be the first time that Jim Harbaugh has reeled in three players from the same high school in the same recruiting cycle. In 2016, Harbaugh got commitments from LB Devin Bush, S Josh Metellus, and LB Devin Gil from Miami (Fla.) Charles Flanagan.
