Packers OL Jordan Morgan to miss rest of 2024 season with shoulder injury

Packers first-round pick Jordan Morgan will miss the rest of the 2024 season with a shoulder injury.

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan will miss the rest of the 2024 season with a shoulder injury that has lingered since August and kept him out of the last five games.

“Yeah, he’s done for the year,” LaFleur told Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.

Morgan, the 25th overall pick in the 2024 draft, was recently spotted wearing a sling at practice. He is currently on injured reserve.

LaFleur didn’t specifically confirm but it’s possible Morgan needed surgery to correct an issue that has dated back to August.

Morgan first injured his shoulder during training camp, preventing him from winning the starting job at right guard. He then aggravated the injury in Week 2 and missed the next three games. After starting his first career game and playing all 65 snaps against the Detroit Lions in Week 9, Morgan injured his shoulder a third time during a Nov. 14 practice and hasn’t played since.

Morgan appeared in six games with one start as a rookie. He was on the field for 186 snaps — mostly as a rotational player with Sean Rhyan at right guard.

The Packers have four of their five preferred starters along the offensive line under contract next season, with the lone exception being center Josh Myers. Offensive tackles Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom are both having strong seasons, making it possible that Morgan — who played mostly left tackle in college — will need to compete for a starting job on the interior again in 2025.

Without Morgan the rest of the way, Andre Dillard, Kadeem Telfort, Travis Glover and Jacob Monk will be the top backups along the offensive line to finish 2024. Monk, a fifth-round pick, has been a healthy scratch for the last four games.

Packers place 2024 first-round pick on injured reserve

The Packers placed rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan on injured reserve. The first-round pick will miss at least four games.

The Green Bay Packers placed rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan on injured reserve on Saturday, meaning the 2024 first-round pick will miss at least the next four games before he’s eligible to return.

It’s unclear if Morgan needs surgery and his season is over or if the recurring shoulder problem can be corrected over the course of a month on injured reserve.

Morgan, the 25th overall pick, suffered another aggravation of a shoulder injury first suffered in training camp. He will miss games against the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions before he eligible to come off injured reserve.

Morgan made one start and appeared in six total games. He played 186 snaps, allowing seven total pressures and committing one penalty. In Week 9, he started at left guard, his first NFL start.

The former Arizona offensive tackle injured the shoulder in August, costing him a chance to win the starting job at right guard. While rotating in at right guard with Sean Rhyan, Morgan injured the shoulder again in Week 2 and missed the next three games.

Coach Matt LaFleur said Morgan hurt the shoulder in practice this week.

Without Morgan for at least the next month, the Packers will likely employ Rhyan as a full-time player at right guard and move rookie Jacob Monk into the top backup job for the interior offensive line.

A rocky first season for Morgan could be over. Even if he returns, the first-rounder has missed crucial developmental time in both practice and games during his rookie season.

Placing Morgan on injured reserve left open two roster spots. The Packers used one on Saturday, signing cornerback Robert Rochell from the practice squad.

Packers first-round pick aggravates shoulder injury, out vs. Bears

Packers rookie Jordan Morgan aggravated a shoulder injury again and is out for Sunday against the Bears.

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Jordan Morgan aggravated a pre-existing shoulder injury and will miss at least Sunday’s showdown with the Chicago Bears.

Coach Matt LaFleur said Morgan — the team’s first-round pick — reinjured his shoulder during practice this week. The Packers ruled him out for Sunday on the final injury report.

“He did (aggravate the shoulder), yesterday at practice,” LaFleur said Friday. “Again, unfortunate. We’re going through that process of what’s next, so we’re just working through it right now.”

It’s possible Morgan could land on injured reserve. The rookie originally injured the shoulder during training camp, which prevented him from winning the job as the starting right guard. Upon returning, Morgan re-injured the shoulder in Week 2 and missed three games.

When healthy, Morgan has rotated in and out of the lineup with Sean Rhyan at right guard.

According to Pro Football Focus, Morgan has allowed seven pressures, including three quarterback hits, and committed one penalty over 186 snaps across six games this season.

If Morgan has to miss extensive time, Rhyan would become a full-time player at right guard and rookie Jacob Monk would likely become the top interior backup.

The Packers made Morgan the 25th overall pick in the 2024 draft.

Packers first-round pick Jordan Morgan expected to make first career NFL start

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Jordan Morgan, the 25th pick in the 2024 draft, is expected to make his first career NFL start on Sunday against the Detroit Lions

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Jordan Morgan is expected to make his first career NFL start on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Per Bill Huber of SI.com, the Packers are moving left guard Elgton Jenkins to center to make up for the absence of Josh Myers, who is inactive with a wrist injury, and Morgan and Sean Rhyan will start at guard, based on pre-game warmups.

The Packers made Morgan the 25th overall pick in the 2024 draft. He’s played in five games while rotating in and out of the lineup with Rhyan at right guard.

Per Huber, Morgan is lining up at left guard during pre-game warmups. He’s never played an NFL snap at left guard but did play exclusively at left tackle during his collegiate years at Arizona.

Morgan dealt with a shoulder injury in training camp and missed out on a chance to win the starting job at right guard. He reinjured the shoulder in Week 2 and missed three games. Now, the Packers’ first-round pick will get a chance to start next to Rasheed Walker at left tackle.

Morgan has played 121 snaps this season. Per Pro Football Focus, Morgan has allowed three pressures (one hit, two hurries) across 62 pass-blocking snaps. He hasn’t been penalized.

Morgan played a season-high 38 snaps in Week 6 but has been used less in recent games, playing 13 snaps in Week 7 and 22 in Week 8. Rhyan has played better and better at right guard.

Can Morgan step up to the challenge against the Lions defensive front in his first career start?

Titans’ final injury report for Week 3: Tyjae Spears questionable vs. Packers

The Tennessee Titans are relatively healthy and ready to go against the Green Bay Packers with Tyjae Spears the only player with a designation.

The Tennessee Titans will return to the field against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon at Nissan Stadium.

To this point, the Titans have been relatively healthy in 2024. However, there are a couple question marks heading into this match-up.

Running back Tyjae Spears is the biggest concern; the second-year back has been limited while battling an ankle injury. While he returned to practice in full on Friday, he is still listed as questionable.

Practice squad linebacker Luke Gifford, who missed practice Thursday with a back injury, was not listed on the report and had no designation.

The Titans also added Morgan Cox to the injury report with an ankle injury. He was a full participant on Friday and also has no designation for Sunday’s match-up with the Packers.

Packers first-round pick Jordan Morgan re-injured shoulder, return timeline unclear

Packers offensive lineman Jordan Morgan re-injured his shoulder vs. the Colts, and his return timeline isn’t currently known.

Green Bay Packers first-round pick Jordan Morgan re-injured the same shoulder he first hurt in training camp, and coach Matt LaFleur isn’t able to provide a clear return timeline for the rookie offensive lineman.

Morgan missed all three practices this week after suffering the re-injury during the first half of last Sunday’s win over the Indianapolis Colts.

How long will Morgan be out?

“We’ll see. Time will tell,” LaFleur said Friday. “He certainly will be out (Sunday).”

The Packers ruled out Morgan for Sunday against the Tennessee Titans on the final injury report released Friday.

Morgan first injured his shoulder in August and missed three weeks, including all three preseason games. He entered the 2024 regular season in a rotation with Sean Rhyan at right guard and has played 48 total snaps on offense, including 28 in the season opener in Brazil and 20 before suffering the injury last Sunday.

Morgan’s absence will open the door for Rhyan to become a full-time player at right guard. It also complicates the backup situations at several positions. Andre Dillard, Kadeem Telfort and rookies Jacob Monk and Travis Glover are the other four backup offensive linemen on the 53-man roster, and Monk — a fifth-round pick out of Duke — is most likely the top backup at guard.

Maybe most importantly, an injury for a young player presents concerns over missing time — in terms of both practice reps and on-field snaps — and any resulting stunted development, especially considering Morgan is learning a new position as a first-year player.

As of Friday, the Packers haven’t placed Morgan on injured reserve. It’s possible that move could come Saturday. If put on injured reserve, Morgan would have to miss at least four games before being eligible to return.

Packers lose first-round pick Jordan Morgan to shoulder injury vs. Colts

The Green Bay Packers ruled out offensive lineman Jordan Morgan for the rest of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts with a shoulder injury.

The Green Bay Packers ruled out offensive lineman Jordan Morgan for the rest of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts with a shoulder injury. The Packers initially said Morgan was questionable to return coming out of halftime but quickly downgraded him to out.

Morgan, the 25th overall pick in the 2024 draft, was rotating in and out of the lineup at right guard with Sean Rhyan. With Morgan now out, Rhyan will take all the snaps at right guard.

Morgan missed time during training camp with a shoulder injury. It’s unclear if this shoulder injury is related to the old one or a new injury altogether. Matt LaFleur may provide an update post-game.

The Packers are down to only two backups along the offensive line the rest of the way Sunday: rookie Jacob Monk and tackle Kadeem Telfort.

Top 5 most impactful Packers rookies to watch during 2024 season

The Green Bay Packers are entering the 2024 season with a new wave of rookies ready to step up and make their mark.

The Green Bay Packers are entering the 2024 season with a new wave of rookies ready to step up and make their mark. With key departures and opportunities across the roster, this year’s rookie class will be crucial to the Packers’ success.

Here are the top five rookies who could make the biggest impact on the field this season:

1. Jordan Morgan (OT, Arizona)

Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

Yes, of course, you expect your first-round pick to be the most impactful rookie but Morgan makes sense considering he will be receiving most of the playing time out of all the draft picks. Morgan is going to have a prominent role along the offensive line and will most likely fit into the right guard position if the Packers decide to roll out their five best offensive linemen (Rasheed Walker – Elgton Jenkins – Josh Myers – Jordan Morgan – Zach Tom). The tackle-to-guard transition is not uncommon but Morgan’s ability to adapt quickly to the NFL will be key, as his performance in both pass protection and the running game will be crucial to the success of the Packers’ offense.

2. Javon Bullard (S, Georgia)

Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

Bullard is another player poised to make an immediate impact for the Packers. The former Georgia Bulldog is known for his physical play, ability to cover a wide range of responsibilities and to be used in multiple positions. Head Coach Matt LaFleur noticed Bullard doing “a lot of great things” in their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns and the hope is for him to take the majority of the first-team snaps. With Xavier McKinney in the fold, the potential of this safety duo could be the catalyst for turning the Packers’ secondary into one of the most formidable in the league after being a massive reliability last season.

3. Edgerrin Cooper (LB, Texas A&M)

Green Bay Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper runs through drills during rookie minicamp Friday at the Don Hutson Center.

One unit that fans should be excited about is the linebackers. Quay Walker has shown promise throughout his first two seasons in the NFL and continues to play a prominent role, Now, the Packers added a linebacker in the second round with Cooper, and the two form a speedy and athletic duo. Cooper can become a key defensive contributor right out of the gate with his ability to thrive in both run support and pass coverage. His combination of speed and instincts could turn the Packers’ linebacker corps into one of the most formidable units in the league. Cooper has the potential to solidify the linebacker position and become a central figure in the Packers’ defensive schemes with Walker.

4. MarShawn Lloyd (RB, USC)

Running back MarShawn Lloyd (32) is shown during organized team activities for the Green Bay Packers Tuesday, May 21, 2024 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Unlike the first two options, Lloyd might not see a ton of playing time out of the game or make an immediate impact. Arguably one of the best running backs in this year’s draft, Lloyd is known for his explosiveness and ability to create big plays, both as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. As he transitions to the NFL, Lloyd will likely rotate with new Packers running back Josh Jacobs but will be eating into the carries of AJ Dillon, whose role in the offense could be in question right before the season starts. However, if Lloyd quickly adapts to the NFL’s speed and physicality, he could emerge as a key playmaker later in the season, providing a dynamic element to the Packers’ offense and providing a 1-2 punch with Jacobs.

5. Evan Williams (S, Oregon)

Scott Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

The Packers loaded up on safeties in the draft and Williams looks like a player that shouldn’t be overlooked. Coming into the draft, Williams was already known for his physical style of play and his understanding of the game. However, he’s shown a lot more. Williams made an impact during the first preseason game and continues to impress when he’s on the field. One thing that stands out that Packers fans haven’t seen in a while from a safety is the tackling.

Williams’s tackling ability was highlighted in their preseason game with the Browns, including a forced fumble. It might be tough to get the starting nod with McKinney and Bullard in the fold but if Williams keeps making plays, the Packers might have to find a role for him.

The Packers’ 2024 rookie class is filled with potential, and these five players are poised to make an impact right away. From solidifying the offensive line to strengthening the defense, these rookies will play crucial roles as the Packers navigate their way to a successful season.

Matt LaFleur talks possibility of ‘Big Nickel’ looks, Jordan Morgan as swing tackle

The Packers might experiment with a “Big Nickel” defensive look, while Jordan Morgan could be a swing tackle possibility.

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur mentioned the possibility of having multiple groupings involving the slot cornerback position and didn’t dismiss the idea of training Jordan Morgan as the swing tackle in case of an injury to Rasheed Walker or Zach Tom.

Asked if Keisean Nixon was locked in as the defense’s starter in the slot, LaFleur said “it’s all a competition” before bringing up the idea of other groupings based on personnel.

“We’ll let it play out,” LaFleur said Tuesday. “Throughout the course of the season, there’s going to be competition. We’re trying to get our best players out there. There’s nothing to say you can’t have multiple groupings as well. A lot of teams will do that. A lot of different bodies in there. Some teams will have a ‘Big Nickel’ where they get more of safety body type in there, vs. their regular nickel, however it shakes out.”

The obvious candidate to play in bigger nickel packages is rookie safety Javon Bullard, who has extensive experience playing in the slot and has the versatility required to play near the line of scrimmage. Bullard is competing to be the starter at safety, but it’s possible the Packers will experiment with playing Bullard in the slot and rookie Evan Williams next to Xavier McKinney at safety.

“The thing that you notice is just the level of physicality he plays with, he’s got great instincts, and his versatility, whether it’s safety or nickel, he’s a guy who can do either or,” LaFleur said.

LaFleur said Bullard “did a lot of great things” in his NFL debut against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

Some teams use safeties as linebackers in “Big Nickel” packages, which could be another way to get Williams or rookie Kitan Oladapo on the field.

On offense, Morgan — the team’s first-round pick — returned to practice Tuesday. He’s been getting reps primarily at right guard, where the Packers believe he has the best case to start right away. But LaFleur didn’t dismiss the idea of giving Morgan more tackle reps to prepare him for a situation where the Packers might need him outside.

“Potentially,” LaFleur said. “We’ll see.”

At this point, Andre Dillard, Caleb Jones, Kadeem Telfort and Travis Glover are getting the majority of the reps at offensive tackle behind the two starters.

Morgan, the 25th overall pick, started for three straight seasons at left tackle for Arizona. He could increase his value dramatically — even as a rookie — if he can both start at right guard and provide depth at offensive tackle. But it would be hard to blame the Packers if they kept Morgan’s focus on one position as he transitions to the NFL.

Packers rookie OL Jordan Morgan returning to practice Tuesday

The Packers are returning OL Jordan Morgan to practice in a limited capacity on Tuesday.

While he won’t be full-go, Green Bay Packers rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan will return to practice on Tuesday after missing a week of action with a shoulder injury.

Morgan, the Packers’ first-round pick, was injured during practice last Tuesday. He missed the team’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns but may now be on a path towards making his NFL debut on Sunday in Denver.

Coach Matt LaFleur said Morgan will be “limited” at Tuesday’s practice — suggesting he’ll only do individual periods.

While a college left tackle, Morgan has been taking the majority of his reps inside at guard. At the time of his injury, he was the preferred first-team option at right guard.

Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich didn’t rule out Morgan eventually getting more reps at tackle, but the team’s focus is getting him ready to play right away at right guard.

Pressed on if the Packers would give Morgan more work at tackle once he returns, LaFleur was non-committal but also open to the idea.

“Potentially, I think everything is up for discussion,” LaFleur said. “We’ll see.”

It’s possible the Packers will eventually need Morgan — a three-year starter at left tackle at Arizona — to be the backup offensive tackle in case of injury to starters Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom.

Elsewhere on the rookie injury front, running back MarShawn Lloyd, who injured his hamstring in the preseason opener, won’t practice Tuesday and has an unspecified timeline for return.

In terms of practice schedule, the Packers won’t be in full pads during Tuesday’s open session. They’ll return to full pads for an open practice Wednesday, then have a walk-through Thursday before flying to Denver and having a joint practice with the Broncos on Friday.
