Video: Recent title challenger Anthony Smith previews UFC 247’s two title fights

Go inside Saturday’s UFC 247 title fights in Houston with recent light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith.

HOUSTON – Two titles are on the line Saturday when the UFC returns to the nation’s fourth largest city.

UFC 247 takes place at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

In the main event, light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] (25-1 MMA, 19-1 UFC) tries to add to his legacy when he meets unbeaten underdog [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC). In the co-feature, women’s flyweight champ [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) is a massive favorite against challenger [autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC).

Ahead of the card, recent light heavyweight title challenger [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] talked to MMA Junkie to break down the card. Smith lost to Jones 11 months ago by unanimous decision, but got back on track this past June with a submission of Alexander Gustafsson. Smith headlines UFC Lincoln in April against Glover Teixeira to try to continue his climb back to contention.

UFC 247 ceremonial weigh-in faceoffs video: Jon Jones, Dominick Reyes go not quite eye-to-eye

Jon Jones and Dominick Reyes met up one last time before they step into the cage on Saturday night.

HOUSTON – Friday marked the final time the competitors for the highly anticipated UFC 247 cross paths before fight night, as the ceremonial weigh-ins are the final bit of official business before the card.

That includes the main eventers, UFC light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones [/autotag](25-1 MMA, 19-1 UFC) and challenger [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), who, well, we can’t say the exactly went eye to eye, since the champion turned his eyes down toward his taller challenger. But the faceoff was intense nonetheless.

UFC 247 takes place Saturday at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

The UFC is back in Houston this week with a pair of title fights featuring dominant champions atop the card.

UFC 247 takes place Saturday at Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] (25-1 MMA, 19-1 UFC) puts his title on the line against unbeaten challenger [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC). Jones is a fairly heavy favorite from the oddsmakers in the fight at as much as 5-1. Not surprisingly, he has a big 11-3 lead in the picks from our 14 MMA Junkie editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers.

In the co-main event, women’s flyweight champ [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) is a massive favorite of as much as 16-1 against [autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), so it should come as little surprise that she is one of our two unanimous picks on the main card at 14-0.

The other unanimous pick is Houston resident [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] (22-7 MMA, 13-5 UFC) in a heavyweight home fight against [autotag]Ilir Latifi[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 7-5 UFC). Lewis is more than a 2-1 favorite, has never lost in Texas in his career, and is a 14-0 pick.

[lawrence-related id=486119,486117]

Also on the main card, [autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] (5-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) is more than a 2-1 favorite in his heavyweight fight against [autotag]Justin Tafa[/autotag] (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), and he’s got a big 11-3 advantage in the picks.

And even though [autotag]Mirsad Bektic[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) is a small favorite in his featherweight fight against [autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC), it’s Ige who has a big 11-3 lead in the picks with most of our staff members thinking mild upset – even though our readers give Bektic the slight advantage.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Jones (71 percent), Shevchenko (90 percent), Adams (63 percent), Bektic (53 percent) and Lewis (86 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Video: Boxing champion Claressa Shields getting her MMA kicks

Claressa Shields, preparing to make her MMA debut sometime soon, posted a video on Twitter showing her kicking a bag for the first time.

Claressa Shields’ manager said a few weeks ago that the three-division titleholder could make her Mixed Martial Arts debut sometime in the near future. Well, she evidently is preparing for that eventuality in earnest.

Shields posted a video on Twitter showing her training in kicking for the first time, evidence that she is dead serious about giving MMA a try.

She said on the post: “Lol first time ever throwing a kick in my life! But as promised! Save the criticism, you guys couldn’t throw a jab like me on the first day To be continued though, I enjoyed practice.”

Mark Taffet, her manager, told ESPN that he and his client believe she can continue to box and pursue a second career in MMA simultaneously. Taffet said he has talked to representatives of several MMA outlets about the crossover.

“There hasn’t been a conversation about moving full time,” Taffet said. “It’s all been a discussion about being the next great two-sport athlete.”

Shields, 24, has trained with MMA stars Cris Cyborg and Kayla Harrison and, according to ESPN, had plans to work with UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones sometime this month.

“She got her feet wet athletically, her toe in the water athletically,” Taffet said a few weeks ago. “The next step for us would be to look at a few different trainers and coaches and speak to them and then decide who an appropriate coach and trainer would be and then make a plan for her to begin training while she continues to blaze trails in boxing.”

Shields told ESPN last year that she wouldn’t want to enter the octagon unless she trained in MMA for a year.

“Just the stuff that I don’t know, like jiu-jitsu and kicking and all that stuff if I wanted to consider it,” said Shields, who was less serious about the move at the time.

Shields (10-0, 2 KOs) is coming off a one-sided decision victory over Ivana Habazin on Jan. 10. That victory gave her titles in three weight classes in only 10 fights, which is a record regardless of gender.

Chris Weidman predicts Dominick Reyes knockout over Jon Jones at UFC 247

Chris Weidman knows a thing or two about shocking the MMA world, and he’s expecting a massive upset in the UFC 247 main event.

[autotag]Chris Weidman[/autotag] knows a thing or two about massive upsets, and he’s predicting one for the ages at UFC 247.

UFC 247 is headlined by light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] defending his title against undefeated [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag].

And Weidman, who was TKO’d by Reyes last October, thinks the challenger will shock the world Saturday night in Houston.

“I got Reyes winning by KO,” Weidman tweeted on Thursday.

[lawrence-related id=486119,486117]

Weidman owns arguably the biggest upset in UFC history, when he dethroned then middleweight champion Anderson Silva by knocking him out in the second round at UFC 162. Weidman went on to also win the rematch via doctor stoppage TKO after a freak accident resulted in Silva suffering a broken leg.

If anyone can picture the unlikely occurrence happening, it’s Weidman, who doesn’t think Jones is invincible.

“Delusional? Can I not have a opinion?” Weidman tweeted in response to a follower criticizing his pick. “Do you think Jones is unbeatable? That would be delusion.”

He added, “Anderson was the GOAT at one point too. He got KOed. Not far fetched.”
