Packers won’t play most starters vs. Broncos in Week 2 of preseason

Broncos QB Bo Nix will face mostly second-string defenders when he starts against the Packers in Week 2 of NFL preseason.

When rookie Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix starts against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, he will face mostly second-string defenders.

“Right now, I don’t anticipate those guys playing versus Denver, the majority of the starters,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said after Green Bay’s first preseason game, via Zach Kruse of Packers Wire. “There may be a select few.”

It would have been ideal for the Broncos to give Nix live-game reps against a starting defense. Fortunately, Nix will face Green Bay’s defensive starters in a joint practice scrimmage on Friday.

“We have the competitive practice versus the Broncos, (we’ll) use that as their game reps and let the other guys play for the most part in that second preseason game, and then we’ll re-evaluate for the third one,” LaFleur said.

As for Denver, coach Sean Payton plans to play most Broncos starters again in Week 2. The team’s plan for their preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals has not yet been announced.

Report: Cowboys to host Rams for second joint practice on Wednesday

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Rams are set to visit Oxnard again following the two teams’ meeting in the preseason opener, which the Rams won, 13-12.

The Cowboys and Rams have made plans to get together for the third time in a week.

The two teams, who held a joint practice in Oxnard last Thursday and then met at SoFi Stadium for the 2024 preseason opener on Sunday, will have another tandem work session on Wednesday. The report comes from Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, citing sources.

The Rams beat the Cowboys by a 13-12 score on a last-minute touchdown throw from Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett, after the Dallas defense had intercepted Bennett four previous times throughout the game.

Most of the Cowboys’ veteran playmakers sat out Sunday’s exhibition contest, including Dak Prescott. The quarterback did take part in last Thursday’s joint practice but then missed Friday’s regular session with what was described as “ankle soreness.” His absence was billed as just precautionary, though, and Prescott himself said he would be able to play in a real game if he had to.

That should put him on the practice field as scheduled this week, including for Wednesday’s scrimmage with the now-very-familiar Rams.

Last week’s visit managed to steer clear of any major fisticuffs, the kind often seen at NFL joint practices. Head coach Mike McCarthy had tried to preemptively curtail any fights ahead of time, and the two teams —for the most part — followed through. Center Brock Hoffman was said to have gotten into a brief “skirmish” with several Rams defenders at one point, but nothing like the ugly melee that caused a 2015 joint session between the two teams to be halted early.

And it obviously wasn’t enough to keep the Rams from making plans to travel to Oxnard for the second week in a row for a little extra work, even after getting the better of the Cowboys on Sunday.

The Cowboys will travel to Las Vegas for their second preseason contest, against the Raiders, on Saturday night.

Select media quotes from Commanders’ joint practice vs Jets

What the locals were saying after Thursday’s practice between the Commanders and Jets.

“A DMV Nightmare” (The Team 980’s Chris Russell, responding to kicker Ramiz Ahmed missing his last three field goal attempts beyond 40 yards. Riley Patterson missed his last two beyond 45).

I think some folks are making far too much of a practice on August 8th in the rain. They don’t play for a month. It’s the beginning of a rebuild. The sky ain’t falling, folks. Lotta football left.”  JP Finlay

“Newly signed tackle Armani Taylor. Dude is a unit.” J.P. Finlay

“Sauce Gardner said he told Jayden Daniels, “Man, you’re going to be real good.”  John Keim

Brycen Tremayne has caught two deep passes. Last one had to twist body to catch. Nice grab. Keeps showing up.”  John Keim

“It’s a tall ask to suggest that Forbes will become a physical corner. But the concern is consistent coverage. – Conversely, Sainristil is that dude. ‘My guy’ in the draft.” George Carmi

Other than the one big play from Forbes, Garrett Wilson, to put it nicely, has gotten the best of 13.” Mitchell Tischler

Overall, the Commanders’ joint practice was a market correction for any runaway expectations about this year. One bad practice can’t doom a season, but it can dampen enthusiasm that the offense will excel right away.” Sam Fortier

Tamp down your expectations. Offense hasn’t been able to find a rhythm or generate anything explosive in limited team reps.” Sam Fortier

Brycen Tremayne had two back-shoulder catches in one-on-ones vs Jets DBs. Mitch Tischler is losing his mind.”  Nicki Jhabvala

Dan Quinn shouting out the Morristown Little League team on the verge of the Little League WS ahead of practice today in NJ was really cool. Quinn is from Morristown, which is a bike ride from the Jets facility. Quinn seems like a really good guy.” Grant Paulsen

Joint practice 1 is complete for the Commanders. OL depth is a MAJOR concern, pass rush flashed a bunch, Learning opportunity for JD5, who got better as the day progressed, didn’t have a chance on some plays bc of O-Line, Outside CB open competition.” Lynell Willingham

WATCH: Commanders WR Brycen Tremayne continues to make his case

The second-year wide receiver continues to impress.

The Washington Commanders opened training camp with three players considered roster locks at wide receiver: Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and rookie Luke McCaffrey.

After strong training camps, you can add Olamide Zaccheaus and Dyami Brown to the list. Brown was likely always on the roster, but he needed to earn his position with a new regime.

That leaves the Commanders with one or two spots at wide receiver, depending on if they keep six or seven. Among the leading contenders for the final spots are veteran Jamison Crowder and second-year players Mitchell Tinsley and Brycen Tremayne.

Tinsley made the 53-man roster last season as an undrafted free agent, while Tremayne spent the year on the practice squad. This summer, both are having an impressive training camp. Washington’s beat reporters seemingly mention Tremayne at least once daily during practice.

On Thursday, the Commanders were in New Jersey for a joint practice with the New York Jets ahead of Saturday’s preseason opener. Tremayne again made everyone take notice.

Tremayne, at 6-foot-4, is the biggest wide receiver on Washington’s roster. Could that give him an advantage?

Tremayne and Tinsley will see the Jets again on Saturday and both must continue to stand out to improve their chances of making the roster.

WATCH: Commanders WR Dyami Brown makes spectacular catch vs. Jets in rain

Dyami Brown continues to have a strong summer.

Washington Commanders wide receiver Dyami Brown knew he was entering a make-or-break season in 2024. The fourth-year wideout is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has only 29 receptions for 476 yards and three touchdowns in his career.

Washington fans have waited every year for Brown to become a reliable option opposite Terry McLaurin, but for one reason or another, it hasn’t happened. Brown did have a breakout game in 2022, catching two passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns against Tennessee.

But there was no follow-up from Brown or the team.

Fortunately for Brown, he has a clean slate under a new coaching staff. He worked hard in the offseason and is firmly in control of the Commanders’ No. 3 wide receiver spot after a strong start to training camp.

On Thursday, the Commanders had a joint practice against the New York Jets, and Brown continues to show signs of breaking out. Check out this big-time catch from Brown on a Jayden Daniels’ deep ball in the rain.

Perhaps having an excellent deep-ball thrower like Daniels is the key to unlocking Brown’s potential. Remember, Brown is still only 24 years old.

Broncos will host Packers for joint practice on Aug. 16

Before facing off in Week 2 of preseason, the Broncos will host the Packers for a joint training camp practice on Aug. 16.

We now have a date.

Last month, the Denver Broncos announced that they will host the Green Bay Packers for a joint training camp practice ahead of their preseason showdown this summer.

The Packers announced their full training camp schedule on Monday, including a joint practice with the Broncos on Friday, Aug. 16.

Denver coach Sean Payton was asked about Denver hosting Green Bay for a joint practice last month.

“That will be here, and I think that will be open to the public,” Payton said on May 23. The team has confirmed on their official website that the joint practice will be open to fans.

After practicing together at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit on Friday, Aug. 16, the Broncos and Packers will face off at Empower Field at Mile High in Week 2 of preseason at 6:00 p.m. MT on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Denver’s preseason game against Green Bay will be locally broadcast on KUSA-TV and nationally televised on NFL Network (all three of the Broncos’ preseason games will be nationally televised).

Denver is expected to announce its training camp schedule later this month. The Broncos typically begin training camp practices in late July.

Broncos will host Packers for joint practice in August

The Broncos will host the Packers for at least one joint practice during preseason this summer.

The Denver Broncos will host the Green Bay Packers for at least one joint practice ahead of their Week 2 preseason showdown this summer, the team announced earlier this week.

The Broncos are set to host the Packers at Empower Filed Field at Mile High on Aug. 18. Before that preseason game, Denver and Green Bay will practice at the Centura Health Training Center.

The Broncos’ complete training camp schedule is yet to be announced, but the team has confirmed the joint practice with the Packers will be open to the public. An exact date is not yet known, but the joint practice will take place the week of Aug. 12.

Last summer, Denver hosted the Los Angeles Rams for a pair of joint practices during preseason. The Broncos hosted the Dallas Cowboys two years ago and the team has also held joint practice sessions with the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and San Franciso 49ers in previous offseasons.

In addition to the Packers, Denver will also face the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers during preseason this summer.

Broncos coach Sean Payton wants to avoid fights during joint practices

“We have to have the discipline when the whistle blows to get onto the next play,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said.

The Denver Broncos are set to host the Los Angeles Rams for a pair of joint practices this week.

So far this summer, Broncos players have done a pretty good job of not escalating any scuffles into big fights at practice. Denver coach Sean Payton wants that to continue when the team hosts the Rams on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Hopefully that’s not a big issue,” Payton said in July when asked about fights at practice. “It hasn’t been a big issue wherever I’ve been. We have to have the discipline when the whistle blows to get onto the next play.

“We see it every year where there is a personal foul or something silly or something stupid that only harms the team. You have to practice that. You deal with it on a case-by-case basis. We have taken players and sent them in, but hopefully that’s not a big issue.”

Last year, Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald swung helmets at opponents during a joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals. Payton doesn’t have to worry about the possibility of that happening this summer because Donald did not make the trip to Denver.

“I think Sean [McVay] will do a great job with his team,” Payton said on Tuesday. “My experience — it’s been with the Chargers over the years. It’s been with the Patriots. We’ve had a lot of good work take place without any fighting, so I don’t expect that to be an issue at all.”

The Broncos and Rams will hope everyone keeps their cool on the practice field leading up to Saturday’s preseason finale.

Highlights from Colts’ joint practice with Eagles

Here are the highlights from the joint practice between the Colts and Eagles.

The Indianapolis Colts visited the Philadelphia Eagles for joint practices Tuesday ahead of the preseason finale, which takes place Thursday night.

Despite this being the first time these two teams got together during the preseason, the practice was intense and physical. It even got to the point where two brawls took place and the head coaches decided to end practice a bit early.

Here are the news, notes and highlights from the joint practice between the Colts and Eagles:

Colts, Eagles joint practice ends after massive brawl

A massive brawl ended the joint practice early.

The Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles held a joint practice Tuesday ahead of the preseason finale, but it appears the practice was cut a bit short due to a massive brawl.

Teams will always do their best to be smart about the fights during joint practices, and they typically will call it quits when the fights are more of a focus than the work.

It seems this massive fight was mostly between Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin and Eagles center Jason Kelce. There also was another fight that included Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett hit Anthony Richardson trying to get the ball out.

That seemed to be the case late during Tuesday’s practice. Here are some of the updates from the fight:
