Joilton Lutterbach released by UFC, suspended two years after testing positive for steroid

So much for Joilton Lutterbach fighting in the UFC after he tested positive for steroids and admitted to using.

[autotag]Joilton Lutterbach[/autotag] will not make the walk to the octagon after all, as he’s been released from his UFC contract following a failed drug test that canceled his promotional debut.

Combat Sports Anti-Doping, which handles the UFC anti-doping program along with Drug Free Sport International, announced the news of Lutterbach’s release and acceptance of a 24-month suspension Tuesday.

Lutterbach (38-10) was supposed to make his UFC debut against Shara Magomedov in June. However, Lutterbach tested positive for the presence of 3a-Hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one, a metabolite of drostanolone, an anabolic steroid that is prohibited at all times. The failed test came from a urine sample collected by DFSI on June 8 after he signed a bout agreement in May.

Lutterbach admitted that he used performance-enhancing drugs prior to signing with the UFC, but only after his failed test. Athletes who sign with the UFC are required to declare any use of prohibited substances upon being added to the anti-doping program, and could be required to wait 180 days and provide at least two negative samples before they can be booked to fight. Lutterbach made no declaration of his drostanolone use in time and therefore was handed the two-year sanction and released.

Lutterbach, who fights out of Germany, competed across several combat sports. He’s currently on a three-fight winning streak in MMA, with his most recent loss coming against Clay Collard under the PFL banner in 2021. Lutterbach has competed for many notable MMA promotions such as the PFL, Brave, Cage Warriors, and ACB.

He’s competed three times in 2024, once in boxing and twice for Karate Kombat.

Joilton Lutterbach admits juicing after scrapped UFC Saudi Arabia fight vs. Shara Magomedov: ‘I preferred to take the risk’

It’s not often that fighters openly admit taking performance-enhancing drugs, but it appears Joilton Lutterbach has.

It’s not often fighters openly admit taking performance-enhancing drugs, but it appears [autotag]Joilton Lutterbach[/autotag] has.

Lutterbach (38-10 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was scheduled to step in on short notice to face Shara Magomedov (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC on ABC 6 (ABC/ESPN/ESPN+) on Saturday at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but was pulled from the fight due to a failed drug test. Replacing him will be Dana White’s Contender Series alum Antonio Trocoli.

Lutterbach initially revealed that the anti-doping commission pulled him from the fight because of a substance found in his urine. Now he has admitted to juicing months before, thinking his system would be cleared once he got the surprise UFC call.

“Thank you for all the messages of affection during this difficult time. I actually used Juice 3 months ago and had no idea that I would sign with the @ufc.

I could have hidden in the mountains or gone to Thailand to hide as many do and are not tested, but I preferred to take the risk and believe I was clean and fit to fight

I signed the contract 3 weeks ago and so I figured I was in the clear. My case will be analyzed by Combat Sport anti-doping and Sub Zero will certainly be frozen for a few months without fighting or freezing anyone. I would like to say sorry to the @ufc and to my opponent Shara.

I will be frozen and not dead. I will be back soon! 🧊😌🖤.”

Lutterbach, a 48-fight MMA veteran, has stayed busy competing at Karate Combat, muay Thai and kickboxing throughout his career. His MMA career has seen stints in promotions such as KSW, Cage Warriors and the PFL.

‘Bullet’ booking: Shara Magomedov gets 48-fight veteran newcomer for UFC Saudi Arabia

Shara Magomedov gets new opponent Joilton Lutterbach for the UFC’s June return to Riyadh.

Highly touted middleweight [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag] will stay on the lineup for the UFC’s return to Saudi Arabia.

Magomedov (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was set to fight Ihor Potieria at the June 22 event, UFC on ABC 6, in Riyadh, but Potieria was pulled to fight Michel Pereira at UFC 301, instead. Now Shara “Bullet” will take on promotional newcomer [autotag]Joilton Lutterbach[/autotag] (38-10 MMA, 0-0 UFC), the UFC announced Monday.

Magomedov made his UFC debut this past October in Abu Dhabi and outworked Bruno Silva for a unanimous decision at UFC 294. It was just the second time in his career the Dagestani went to a decision. He has 10 of his 12 wins by knockout.

Joilton Lutterbach is a Brazilian who fights out of Germany. Although he’s just 31, he has 48 MMA fights, as well as many other competitive fights in disciplines like muay Thai and kickboxing. He has a fairly even record with 14 knockouts, 13 submissions and 11 decisions, and he’s only been finished three times in his 10 losses.

(Editor’s note: Updated after Anthony Pettis was removed from his fight against Alex Martinez on the main card, and Clay Collard vs. Joilton Lutterbach was moved into that position.)

The PFL is back this week featherweights and lightweights on the lineup – and the MMA debut of a boxing superstar.

2021 PFL 4 takes place Thursday at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. The main card airs on ESPN2 following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, women’s boxing champion and sensation [autotag]Claressa Shields[/autotag] (0-0) makes her highly anticipated MMA debut at lightweight against [autotag]Brittney Elkin[/autotag] (3-6). Shields is the betting favorite at -275 at BetMGM, and she’s one of three unanimous picks from our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers.

In the co-feature, with former UFC and WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis (24-11) out of his fight against Alex Martinez (8-0) due to illness, the lightweight bout between [autotag]Clay Collard[/autotag] (19-8) and [autotag]Joilton Lutterbach[/autotag] (34-9) moved up from the prelims. Collard is a -225 betting favorite and a unanimous pick from our staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Bubba Jenkins[/autotag] (15-4) is our third unanimous pick in his featherweight regular season fight against [autotag]Bobby Moffett[/autotag] (13-5). Jenkins is a -275 favorite in the fight.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Tyler Diamond[/autotag] (12-1) is the only fighter keeping us from a fully unanimous main card. He’s a +225 underdog against [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] (20-3) in their featherweight fight. But it’s still Loughnane with a near-unanimous rout at 12-1 in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Shields (73 percent), Collard (78 percent), Jenkins (82 percent) and Loughnane (67 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
