Ex-Titans S Johnathan Cyprien announces retirement

Ex-Titans safety Johnathan Cyprien has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Former Tennessee Titans safety Johnathan Cyprien has announced that he is retiring from the NFL, something he will make official at the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Everbank Stadium on Thursday.

Cyprien made the announcement via Twitter. The former second-round pick of the Jaguars last played a snap in the NFL in 2020 with the San Francisco 49ers.

After four years in Jacksonville, Cyprien signed a four-year, $25 million deal with the Titans. He appeared in 10 games in 2017 but suffered a torn ACL prior to the 2018 campaign.

That injury opened the door for the signing of fellow safety Kenny Vaccaro, who thrived in the Titans’ defense in 2018 before landing himself an extension in 2019 that allowed Tennessee to part ways with Cyprien.

Cyprien would eventually land on his feet with the Philadelphia Eagles and was traded to the Atlanta Falcons a few months later but landed on season-ending injured reserve after just one game.

He played in four games with the Niners in 2020, his last in the NFL.

Johnathan Cyprien says he’ll retire with Jaguars on Thursday

Former Jaguars safety Johnathan Cyprien says he’s officially retiring with the team this week.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars safety Johnathan Cyprien says he’ll retire as a member of the team at EverBank Stadium on Thursday.

A Jaguars spokesperson confirmed the event, but said it’ll be a private moment for Cyprien with no media engagement planned.

Cyprien, 33, was the Jaguars’ second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft and started 60 games in his four seasons with the team. He recorded two interceptions, 10 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles with Jacksonville.

After his rookie contract expired, Cyprien became a free agent and signed a four-year, $25 million deal with the Tennessee Titan. However, he dealt with a hamstring injury in his first year with the team and missed his entire second season due to an ACL tear.

Cyprien was released by the Titans in 2019 after playing only 10 games for the team and later spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons, and San Francisco 49ers. His last NFL game was in November 2020.

In the years since his time in the NFL ended, Cyprien has begun work as real estate investment advisor.

49ers roster moves: Johnathan Cyprien waived, DL released off practice squad

The 49ers waived safety Johnathan Cyprien, who’d been on IR since week 10 with a hamstring injury.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced a pair of minor roster moves. They released safety Johnathan Cyprien from the active roster. Defensive lineman Willie Henry Jr. was let go from the practice squad.

Cyprien joined the 49ers late in training camp and wound up landing on the practice squad before injuries forced the team to elevate him to the active roster in Week 7. He hurt his hamstring against the Saints and was placed on Injured Reserve. There was no announcement of an injury settlement or his activation off the injured list which indicates he was let go from IR. Cyprien played in four games and only saw action on special teams.

Henry Jr. spent time with the 49ers in the offseason before getting waived late in camp. He re-signed with the practice squad on Oct. 27 and was flexed to the active roster for one game against the Rams while San Francisco was missing a slew of defensive linemen. He played just four snaps before reverting back to the practice squad after the game.

49ers place 2 more on Injured Reserve

The San Francisco 49ers now have 16 players on Injured Reserve after placing JaMycal Hasty and Johnathan Cyprien there after Week 10.

The list of 49ers on Injured Reserve got two players longer Tuesday when the club announced safety Johnathan Cyprien and running back JaMycal Hasty were placed on the injured list.

Cyprien hurt his hamstring Sunday vs. the Saints and is expected to miss a few weeks per head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers elevated Cyprien from the practice squad after Jaquiski Tartt’s season-ending toe injury. With Cyprien out, Tarvarius Moore, Jimmie Ward and Marcell Harris are the only three safeties on the active roster.

One of the options to replace Cyprien on the roster was undrafted rookie Jared Mayden from Alabama. However, San Francisco on Tuesday put Mayden on the Practice Squad Injured List.

Hasty became the third 49ers running back on IR heading into the Bye week. He joins Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. who’ve both missed several weeks. Hasty on Sunday suffered a broken collarbone that will end his season. The undrafted rookie finished the year with 148 rushing yards and a touchdown on 39 carries.

With Hasty and Cyprien hitting IR, the 49ers have 16 players on that list, although a few are on track to come off after the Bye.

49ers to sign safety Johnathan Cyprien

Johnathan Cyprien brings some much-needed experience to the 49ers safety depth chart.

The 49ers are set to make a veteran addition to their secondary. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, safety Johnathan Cyprien is going to join San Francisco after spending last season with the Falcons and Eagles.

Cyprien, 29, was the No. 33 overall pick in the 2013 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent four seasons in Jacksonville before joining the Tennessee Titans for the 2017 season. A torn ACL in training camp knocked him out for the entire 2018 campaign. He remained a free agent until the following August when he signed with the Eagles. Philadelphia traded him to the Falcons after he played just one game for them. Atlanta had him for four games but eventually placed him on Injured Reserve with a foot injury.

It’ll be interesting to see where Cyprien fits in the 49ers’ defense. He’s a very good run defender, but he’s not been particularly adept in coverage throughout his career.

He won’t battle for a starting job, but he’ll be in the mix for a reserve strong safety spot alongside Marcell Harris and undrafted rookie Jared Mayden.

If he’s healthy, his experience could make him a valuable addition in the 49ers’ secondary.
