Florida LHP/1B Jac Caglianone named 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year

Was there ever any doubt? Florida superstar Jac Caglianone is officially the best two-way player in college baseball.

The College Baseball Foundation named Florida first baseman and left-handed pitcher Jac Caglianone the 2024 John Olerud two-Way Player of the Year Award winner on Friday.

Caglianone and the Gators wrapped up a deep postseason run on Wednesday with a loss to Texas A&M in the College World Series semifinals. The 6-foot-5-inch, 225-pounder’s slugging was well-documented coming into this season, but he really took a step forward on the mound as the unquestioned ace of one of the last three teams standing in college baseball.

“In a time when the popularity of two-way players has exploded across the highest levels of baseball, Jac Caglianone set himself apart with exceptional play at the plate and on the mound throughout the entire 2024 season,” co-chair of the John Olerud Award Keith Patrick said. “He carried that play deep into the postseason and became the first starting pitcher to homer in a College World Series game since 1997. We offer our highest congratulations to Jac. His record-setting season for the Gators epitomizes what the John Olerud Award is all about.”

Caglianone joins 2012 winner Brian Johnson as the only Gators to take home the award.

Jac Caglianone, the hitter

Caglianone’s dominance at the plate won’t be forgotten anytime soon in the SEC. He ranks in the conference’s all-time top 10 for home runs in a career with 75, and most of the guys ahead of him played three or more seasons.

Before going over some of the crazy stats Caglianone put up in the Orange and Blue, let’s remember that he only played two full seasons with the Gators, starting his true freshman year late after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Caglianone was one of the nation’s most-feared hitters in 2024, slashing .419/.544/.875 with 104 hits, 35 home runs and 72 runs batted in. He set the program record for homers in back-to-back seasons, finishing with 33 in 2023 and 35 this year.

In addition to being the home run king in Gainesville, Caglianone leaves Florida ranked first all-time in slugging percentage (.760), sixth in runs batted in (189) and total bases (484) and eighth in batting average (.355).

He’s also been hit the sixth-most times of any Gator since they starting recording the stat in 1986 with 30.

It’s surprising to see Caglianone left off the program’s all-time leaderboard for walks, considering Caglianone was given the free pass intentionally 31 times this year. He walked 58 times to just 26 strikeouts, nearly flipping his line from a year ago — 58 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Jac Caglianone, the pitcher

Caglianone is a better hitter than he is a pitcher, but that doesn’t mean the he’s a slouch on the mound. MLB Pipeline still gives him a 50 grade overall as a pitcher, with four usable pitches.

The fastball is what excites people the most. Caglianone has flashed 98-99 mph in game somewhat regularly and can reach back for triple digits. It’s overpowering at the college level, especially from the left side. His best secondary is his changeup, which is what made him a real strikeout threat this season, but his slider is serviceable when under control.

“The Tommy John surgery survivor struggled to find the strike zone in his first collegiate pitching action last year, but a more compact delivery was helping him stay around the zone more, even if his walk rate still remained high,” MLB Pipeline said. “He touches triple digits with his fastball and he introduced a 90-mph cutter that he featured more than his slider this fall to go along with a solid changeup.”

Command remains the biggest question mark for Caglianone and is the reason more teams are going to want him as a hitter than pitcher. Still, there’s little doubt that this is one of the best two-way talents baseball has ever seen. Why not give him a shot to play both sides in the minors?

Florida two-way star Jac Caglianone named a John Olerud Award Finalist

It’s official. Florida’s Jac Caglianone is among the nation’s top five two-way players for a second consecutive year. Will he take home the John Olerud Award this year?

For the second straight season, Florida first baseman and left-handed starting pitcher [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag] has been named a finalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

Caglianone is the lone repeat name on the list, joined by Louisiana Tech’s Ethan Bates, Oklahoma State’s Carson Benge, Georgia Tech’s Came Jones and San Diego’s Austin Smith.

The Gators just got a look at Benge and the Cowboys over the weekend. Benge homered off Caglianone to win the head-to-head matchup, but the committee will consider the entire season for each finalist.

“The most recognizable name in the country in college baseball in terms of two-way players, Caglianone picked right up where he left off as a finalist for the 2023 award,” the College Baseball Foundation said in its release. “He was a monster at the plate, hitting .415 with 29 home runs and 58 RBI with an .844 slugging percentage and .988 fielding percentage. On the mound, he went 5-1 with a 4.32 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 62 innings.”

It should be noted that the stats mentioned are pre-regional, and Caglianone is the only player left on the field with games left on the schedule. Although he hasn’t had the heroic playoff moment just yet, he’s the reason the offense moves and the ace of the staff.

Florida’s Jac Caglianone named a John Olerud Award semifinalist

For the second year in a row, Florida’s Jac Caglianone is a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

Florida baseball star [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag] is among the 10 semifinalists for the 2024 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, according to an announcement from the College Baseball Foundation on Tuesday.

Caglianone is one of four semifinalists who earned the distinction a year ago, and he’s the only 2023 finalist to make the top 10 this year. It’s safe to say that Caglianone is the favorite to win the award at this point, but many were surprised when an equally impressive sophomore campaign failed to bring home some hardware.

Still, Caglianone must finish the year out strong to win this award. The selection committee chairman, George Watson, made that clear.

“Whether they’re seasoned upperclassmen or up-and-coming underclassmen, this year’s Olerud semifinalists are making a major impact both for their team and on the game itself,” Watson said. “With only a couple weeks left before the NCAA Tournament begins, it will be interesting to see how many of these talented players will lead their team into the Field of 64.”

Some Elite Numbers From Cags

A consensus All-American last season, Caglianone hasn’t slowed down a step at the plate. He’s slashing .418/.529/.862 with 28 home runs and 55 runs batted in. He’s also struck out just 18 times compared to 38 walks — many of which have been intentional.

But what’s elevated Caglianone’s game even more is the poise he’s shown on the mound two years removed from Tommy John surgery. Remember, Caglianone started off as a freshman halfway through his freshman year as he came back from the injury.

His fastball hasn’t climbed to triple digits yet, topping out at 98 mph, but Caglianone’s command has been worlds better than in previous years. Being able to utilize the slider and change willingly also gives him the ability to go through the order multiple times.

Who Else Could Win?

Oklahoma State’s Carson Benge is the biggest threat to Caglianone missing out on the award. The Cowboys are ranked No. 19 right now and could end up hosting a regional with a strong finish to the regular season and conference tournament.

Meanwhile, Florida isn’t guaranteed a spot in the Field of 64 without a .500 record locked up. The Gators can end the regular season with a .500 record even with a series loss, but it makes it very difficult to navigate the SEC Tournament.

Caglianone often plays a large role when Florida comes out on top. If he can will the Gators to a big series win over the school’s biggest rival, it should be enough to lock up the Olerud award.
