Notre Dame avoided an 0-3 start in ACC play with an 88-87 win at Syracuse on Saturday.

Notre Dame avoided an 0-3 ACC start by winning their second straight game at the Carrier Dome over Syracuse, 88-87.

The Fighting Irish started strong, stumbled through some of the middle part before rallying very late to walk out victorious.

Notre Dame looks to get to .500 in ACC play Wednesday night when they travel to take on North Carolina State.

Notre Dame Basketball Earns Much-Needed Victory at Syracuse

After dropping both split-ACC contests this season in the opener at North Carolina and the early December home affair with Boston College, Notre Dame needed an ACC win in the worst way possible.

Factor in the Irish had won just three of their previous 21 regular season conference games dating back to March of 2018 and the need for a win was only that more obvious.

Thanks to shooting 15 of 31 beyond the arc (48.4%) the Irish were able to get by Syracuse for the third straight time in the Carrier Dome, 88-87.

Notre Dame had been shooting just 33.8% from three-point range entering Saturday so it was pleasant change of pace for the now 10-4 overall and 1-2 in ACC-play, Fighting Irish.

12 of those 15 three’s came from Prentiss Hubb and TJ Gibbs who had six each and combined for 43 points. John Mooney did his standard double-double thing, scoring 28 while pulling down 14 rebounds.

Leading 70-69 with just over five minutes left Hubb had a bad moment, bumping into Joe Girard and getting hit with a technical foul.

Girard would then score the next ten Syracuse points starting with the two free-throws for the technical and the Orange took a 79-75 lead with 3:37 to go.

Juwan Durham has a put-back before a pair of free-throws by Hubb brought the Irish within an 82-81 deficit with 1:51 to go.

Notre Dame improves to 10-4 on the year and 1-2 in ACC play while Syracuse falls to 1-2 in the ACC and saw their three game winning streak end.

Notre Dame returns to action Wednesday night when they’ll take on the Wolfpack of North Carolina State in Raleigh.

John Mooney (28 points, 14 rebounds) broke an 84-all tie with 39.7 seconds left when he got his own rebound off a miss and laid the ball back up and in. It gave Notre Dame the lead for good.

Prentiss Hubb (22 points, nine assists) made it 88-84 with two free throws, and Syracuse struggled to hit a 3-pointer on their final possession. Joseph Girard III finally knocked down a trey with 0.4 seconds left, but by then, the Irish only had to inbound the ball successfully to finish the win. Girard tried to draw a foul on his shot for a potential four-point play, but it was ruled a flop.

T.J. Gibbs scored 21 points for the Irish with all of his field goals coming on 3s. Rex Plueger was involved with a collision that aggravated his surgically-repaired left knee and didn’t play in the second half. However, he wasn’t about to let that diminish his postgame enthusiasm.

The Irish enter this game first in the ACC and third nationally in assists at 18.2 a game. With 23 assists in their Dec. 29 win over Alabama A&M, they recorded their fourth game this season with at least 20 dimes. They also have committed the fewest fouls a game in the country (11.6), so the Orange and the rest of the ACC will have to make the most of the few free-throw opportunities available.

John Mooney, the nation’s top rebounder at 10.3 boards a game, needs only eight rebounds to reach 700 for his career. With seven consecutive double-doubles and 10 for the season to tie for the most in the country, Mooney should be able to get to this milestone quickly.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Close 2019 With Win Over Alabama A&M

As if there was any concern about its final game before the New Year and the rest of its ACC schedule, Notre Dame led wire-to-wire in an 82-56 win over Alabama A&M on Sunday at Purcell Pavilion. Five players scored in double figures for the Irish (9-4) while the Bulldogs (3-8) never recovered from a first half in which they shot 7 of 36 from the field (19.4 percent).

T.J. Gibbs had a 7-of-10 shooting performance while leading all scorers with 17 points. John Mooney pulled down his latest double-double of 16 points and 18 rebounds. Dane Goodwin scored 12 off the bench, and 11 points each came from Juwan Durham and Prentiss Gibbs. Durham went to the locker room after suffering a sprained left knee on a rebound but returned to the bench before the game was over.

Notre Dame finishes its nonconference schedule at 9-2. The slate that will determine whether it goes dancing in March begins Saturday with a trip to Syracuse. A win would get the Irish back on the right track after earlier ACC losses to North Carolina and Boston College.

The Irish enter their final nonconference game of the season having lost three of their past five contests, most recently a tough Crossroads Classic defeat to Indiana. Look for them to rely on their two-way play once again. John Mooney has been the leader there with nine double-doubles in 11 games, but Nate Laszewski is coming off the first double-double of his collegiate career, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds as a substitute in the Indiana loss.

The Irish have taken better care of the ball lately, averaging 7.5 rebounds over their past two games after coughing it up at least 10 times in five of their previous six. It’s progress, but a trend that will have to continue as the remainder of the ACC schedule awaits.

Notre Dame (8-4) turned a 17-point deficit into a five-point lead with 3:42 left. But Armaan Franklin made two 3-pointers after that, including one that gave Indiana (11-1) the lead with 15.7 seconds left. John Mooney missed a game-tying layup, and Rex Pflueger was unable to connect on a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Mooney tied for the team lead in scoring with Dane Goodwin for 15 points and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Nate Laszewski met the bare minimum for a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Juwan Durham added 11 points.

Already ravaged by injuries to their rotation, the Irish momentarily suffered another blow when T.J. Gibbs went back to the locker room in the first half clutching his left leg. Though he returned before halftime, he appeared bothered by the leg while on the floor. Pfluger also was bitten by the injury bug with a sore groin before going back into the game a short time later.

Two figures involved in that historic game, Digger Phelps and Bill Walton, were part of the ABC broadcast when these teams met again Saturday. If viewers tuning in were more focused on the shenanigans between those two, it probably was because the Irish had what became a 75-61 win well in hand.

The Irish (7-3) continued the 3-point barrage they had against Detroit Mercy. After John Mooney’s opening two-point basket, Notre Dame’s next six field goals came from beyond the arc. In fact, 24 of their 31 first-half points were scored there. Any second-half run by the Bruins (7-3) was answered (a total of 15 3-pointers helped), and that was the game.

Prentiss Hubb scored 15 of his game-high 20 points from 3-point range. Dane Goodwin made 3 treys off the bench while contributing 16 points. TJ Gibbs had four 3-pointers as part of his 15 points, and John Mooney joined the double-double club again with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Back on Track With Record Win

Looking for any possible way to end its two-game losing streak, Notre Dame chose to break out the offensive firepower Tuesday against Detroit Mercy. The results was a 110-71 win that saw the Irish (7-3) turn it into a blowout little by little. The Titans (1-8) simply had no answer for a team that tied its single records for assists (33) and 3-pointers (20).

Six players scored in double figures for the Irish. Dane Goodwin was lethal off the bench, leading Notre Dame with 27 points in 28 minutes on 10-of-13 shooting. Just behind Goodwin was T.J. Gibbs, who scored all 18 of his points on 3-pointers. Nate Laszewski earned 12 of his 14 points off the bench from beyond the arc.

John Mooney reached the double-double mark again with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Also achieving a double-double was Prentiss Hubb, who had a 13-point, 11-assist line. Juwan Durham came within one rebound of joining the club but scored 16.

The Irish shot 59.4 percent from the field and made all eight of their free throws, though the charity stripe obviously wasn’t needed on this night.

Notre Dame Basketball: Renewing Detroit Mercy Rivalry

If Notre Dame (6-3) ever needed a time for Detroit Mercy (1-7) to appear on its schedule, this is it. A blowout loss at Maryland in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge followed by a tough home defeat to Boston College reminded the Irish that their recent six-game winning streak merely was a blip in a long season. They hope Tuesday’s game with the Titans at Purcell Pavilion will give them to relief they need.

Facing the Titans for the first time since November 2011, the Irish once again will look to John Mooney, the nation’s leading rebounder at 13.5 boards a game. Mooney logged his third consecutive double-double and sixth in his first eight games with 16 points and 18 rebounds against Boston College on Saturday. He is 12 rebounds away from tying Rob Kurz (650) for most career rebounds in the Mike Brey era.

Notre Dame is averaging 10.1 turnovers a game after losing the ball a season-high 15 times in Saturday’s loss. It has not finished a season averaging double figures in turnovers since the 2013-14 season (10.3). Though the Irish rank sixth nationally in that category this season and second in the ACC, they’ll have to limit those turnovers to snap their two-game skid.
