NFL players and fans react to the death of the John Madden

John Madden was an absolute legend. RIP.

John Madden, the legendary NFL coach, announcer, and namesake for one of the greatest sports video games of all time died unexpectedly Tuesday morning at the age of 85, the league announced in a statement tonight.

Madden was an absolute legend in everything that he did and his amazing life story was beautifully told just a few days ago in a must-watch documentary that aired on Fox before the Browns-Packers Christmas Day Game.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement:

“Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. David Bell

Interesting matchup at this position for this game.

People watching Notre Dame and Purdue might want to ask if they’d rather have their top receiver gain more yards or score more touchdowns. The Irish’s Michael Mayer is a tight end, but he also finds the end zone a bunch. John Madden used to frequently say in his video game that tight ends were more of a threat in a red zone than regular receivers, so that theory holds water here. All Irish fans care about is Mayer not disappearing for long stretches as he has been prone to do in the first two games.

The Boilermakers’ David Bell is an actual receiver but has fewer receptions and far fewer touchdowns than Mayer despite accumulating more yardage. That has to make fans wonder if he’s better at helping his team get downfield than finishing off drives. Irish fans saw that a lot with Javon McKinley last year. While Bell may not be absolutely necessary to help the Boilermakers pull out a win in South Bend, it sure would help to unlock all facets of the game that are required of a receiver.

Ranking 15 of the most valuable NFL broadcasters of all-time

There have been athletes and broadcasters who have done incredible work in the NFL broadcast booth.

The report ESPN could be trying to swing a trade with NBC for Al Michaels inspired thought on who have been the most valuable broadcasters to call NFL games. This would be play-by-play and game analysts. Not studio people who weigh in from afar.

15. Jim Nantz

Jim Nantz has been the voice of CBS for the Final Four, golf and the NFL for many years. He’s smooth on play-by-play. However, don’t think there is an iconic call or any one NFL moment that leaps off the mic.
