Lakers, Darvin Ham dismiss three assistant coaches
Three of the Lakers’ assistant coaches have been dismissed as new head coach Darvin Ham builds his own staff.
Darvin Ham, the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, is starting to make decisions as far as who will be on his staff come the new season this fall.
Yesterday, it was reported that Ham had reached out to Rasheed Wallace, who had been his teammate on the 2004 NBA champion Detroit Pistons, to join his staff.
On Tuesday, word came out that Ham had made the decision to get rid of three incumbent assistants who had been assistant coaches under previous head coach Frank Vogel.
Via Lakers Daily:
“According to a report, assistant coaches David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy and John Lucas III will not be retained by the team.”
Ham has been discussing assistant coaching roles with several possible candidates around the league, sources tell ESPN. That’s a process that’s expected to be ongoing for weeks. https://t.co/UPhZZI4zbJ

Fizdale had been a big part of Vogel’s staff. He had previously been an assistant coach for the Miami Heat during LeBron James’ time with them, then moved on to be the head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks.
Penberthy, a former player who won two rings with the Lakers in 2001 and 2002, had been a shooting coach for them until this season when he was moved to a front-of-the-bench role.
Lucas was hired by the last prior to this season. He had played in the NBA from 2006 to 2017.

Lakers’ assistant John Lucas III jokes about LeBron James’ dunk on him in 2012
New Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach John Lucas III joked about the time LeBron James jumped over him for a dunk in 2012.
The Los Angeles Lakers recently announced the hiring of John Lucas III as an assistant coach on Frank Vogel’s staff, and he has familiarity with some members of the team.
Lucas III played eight seasons in the NBA for six teams, but he had the most success with the Chicago Bulls in 2011-12. In that season, Lucas averaged 7.5 points per game off the bench.
However, he had an encounter in one game against LeBron James and the Miami Heat that has been brought up since the Lakers hired him.
In a game between the Bulls and Heat on Jan. 28, 2012, James climbed the ladder and threw down a seamless dunk on Lucas’ head.
Now that Lucas will be coaching James, Lucas joked on Instagram about that moment:

“Man it just hit me that I will be coaching @kingjames the very man who jumped over me in a game. He going to have to do extra laps in practice for this. 🤣🤣🤣”
Lucas III is expected to help with player development and guide the locker room with his experience, but this will definitely be a moment the team also jokes about in the locker room.

Lakers announce hiring of assistants David Fizdale, John Lucas III, two more to training staff
The Los Angeles Lakers announced the hiring of two assistant coaches and two training staff coaches, including David Fizdale.
The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday the hiring of David Fizdale, John Lucas III, Roger Sancho and Ed Streit, who got a promotion, to the coaching staff.
Fizdale, a former head coach, will be an assistant coach with an end-of-the-bench role on Frank Vogel’s staff. The deal with Fizdale was initially reported earlier in the summer after Jason Kidd departed for the Dallas Mavericks, but it is now official.
Lucas III was initially reported earlier in the month, and he is expected to have a role with player development and is an experienced voice in the locker room. His father said Lucas III has a long relationship with LeBron James.
Sancho comes in to be the head athletic trainer for the team, an area of struggle for the Lakers last season as injuries piled up towards the latter half of the year. Sancho recently spent the last seven seasons with the Golden State Warriors, with the last five coming as an assistant athletic trainer.
Streit promotes to the head strength and conditioning coach after being an assistant in that role since 2019-20.

Report: Lakers hire John Lucas III to coaching staff
The Los Angeles Lakers are adding former NBA player John Lucas III to Frank Vogel’s coaching staff.
The Los Angeles Lakers have hired John Lucas III to the coaching staff, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
Frank Vogel, who recently received a contract extension, mans the staff as the head coach. David Fizdale, Phil Handy and Mike Penberthy are some of the prominent assistant coaches on the team.
Lucas played eight seasons in the league for six different teams. He most notably had success with the Chicago Bulls in the 2011-12 season when he averaged 7.5 points per game off the bench.
The 38-year-old coach got experience as a coach from 2017-19 when he was an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Now in L.A., the Lakers will have a voice in the locker room with playing experience, which will help connect with the players. Miles Simon, who had a role with player development the last few seasons, recently became the head coach of the South Bay Lakers of the G League.
