Huskers kicker John Hohl getting recognized for clutch performances

John Hohl came through in the clutch for the Huskers on Saturday.

Nebraska football offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield has been impressed with the work kicker John Hohl is doing. Former starting kicker Tristan Alvano is on the mend, and the offensive coordinator gave full praise on Tuesday afternoon.

Hohl had a stellar game against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday. He kept the Huskers close throughout it, making all three of his field goals for nine points. A 54-yard kick was his longest of the afternoon.

The freshman has gone four-of-eight on-field goals for the year and made all 11 of his extra points.

Satterfield gave him praise during his press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s amazing. He just put on a show out here today. I’ll let Coach (Rhule) tell you all about that. Coach was putting him in some weird situations with the wind and he just kept coming through. It’s from a lot of hard work. We watch him every day, we come up to him as a team and watch him kick. From where it started to where it is now has been really cool to watch, how he’s developed and worked at it.”

Hohl’s development and stellar play could be important. Nebraska has been searching for stability in the kicking game throughout the entire season. A strong finish to the 2024 campaign could allow the coaching staff to have some flexibility for this year and beyond.

Kicker Tristan Alvano out for Purdue game

Redshirt freshman John Hohl will start in place of the injured Tristan Alvano.

Nebraska’s kicking situation just became more complicated. Head coach Matt Rhule announced on the Huskers Radio Network on Wednesday night that kicker Tristan Alvano is out, and John Hohl will start the Purdue game.

The head coach also confirmed that Alvano is still a few weeks away from being cleared to return. Alvano is three-of-four on field goals and a perfect 12-for-12 on extra points this season. Hohl is one-of-two on field goals and four-of-four on extra points.

Hohl previously attended Iowa Western Community College and redshirted his freshman year in 2023. He arrived at Nebraska this summer with four years of eligibility remaining. Hohl garnered attention from his performance at a Kohl’s Kicking showcase in late May.

His performance earned him the rank of top transfer kicker at the event. Following the event, Hohl also received an offer from Coastal Carolina, temporarily joining the Chanticleers. However, Hohl opted to walk on at Nebraska, earning a spot on the roster.

Nebraska will travel to West Lafayette this Saturday to face the Purdue Boilermakers. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CT, and the game can be seen on Peacock.

Huskers coach Matt Rhule outlines kicking plans for Saturday

The Huskers will take a dual-kicker approach on Saturday.

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule offered some clarity regarding the team’ kicking situation on Thursday afternoon. He told reporters that the program could use two kickers on Saturday. John Hohl could kick from farther out, and Tristan Alvano could handle shorter kicks. Rhule expects Hohl to handle kickoffs, as reported by the Omaha World-Herald’s Bland.

Discussions about the kicking battle continued throughout training camp. Hohl impressed both special teamteam’sches, Ed Foley and Rhule.

Alvano has been battling injuries over the course of the past couple of months. Foley indicated that Alvano would probably be ready for SatuSaturday’sner, although that would be decided prior to game time.

At the very least, this gives the Huskers the opportunity to see what they have in both kickers. It also does not force Alvano to rush back as he recovers from injury. Kickoff for SatuSaturday’se is set for 3:30 PM

Huskers coach Matt Rhule reveals timeline on starting kicker decision

The starting kicker position has been an interesting one to follow over the course of fall camp.

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule discussed some injury updates during his press conference on Monday as the team prepares for UTEP. He revealed that the decision on who will kick in Saturday’s game will be decided either Thursday or Friday.

The incumbent kicker is Tristan Alvano. He went nine-of-15 on field goals last season. He made all 27 of his extra points in an up-and-down freshman campaign.

The coaching staff has previously praised new addition John Hohl. He has been impressive during preseason camp, making for an interesting battle at the kicking position.

With that in mind, Rhule indicated that there would be a set timeframe for when the starting kicker would be decided.

Tristan (Alvano) is kicking, he’s in the mix. We’ll make a decision probably Thursday or Friday for who’s going to kick.”

It will be interesting to see who gets the job. It would be good to get stability in a position that has not had it over the past couple of seasons.

Husker coach Ed Foley discusses emergence of kicker John Hohl

Ed Foley is pleased with the progress of John Hohl.

Nebraska football special teams coordinator Ed Foley met with the media on Tuesday and gave some updates on his unit. This included sophomore kicker Tristan Alvano, who has been battling injuries.

Foley noted that the kicker has been kicking the ball this week and should make it in time for the August 31 opener.  He was also impressed with the way John Hohl has been kicking the football.

Hohl has been discussed quite a bit over the past couple of days, with Matt Rhule giving him props earlier this week.

It appears that Foley also likes what Hohl brings to the table. He discussed his progression from when the Huskers first recruited him to now.

He was on our radar and we knew him for probably a year,” Foley said. “With really seeing him do what he can do, our camp. He came in for the camp, and was working with our guys during the Matt Rhule Football Camp that second week in June. He was a monster in that workout. He just looked really good. It’s not as random as ‘see how he does, through the course of that camp.’ He actually came to two camps. We watched him make pressure kicks and he did the circuit, so he’s out there with guys like Jamie Kohl. We’ve seen him in some high pressure situations in addition to what I saw with my own eyes. But, to equate that to 87,000 in the stadium, that’s something we have to see like what we did with Tristan (Alvano) last year.”

It will be interesting to see how Hohl figures into the equation, especially given how Alvano had such a big role in the kicking game last year. Depth is never a bad thing when it comes to special teams, and it could prove useful, with Alvano still recovering from injury.

Hohl’s emergence also goes back to the coaching staff’s recruiting strategy. This staff never seems to leave any stone unturned when it comes to recruiting, and this is a situation where it could pay big dividends.

Huskers have leading kicker with Tristan Alvano limited in practice

There appears to be a kicking battle emerging for the Huskers in camp.

Nebraska football may have a kicking battle on their hands, as John Hohl is currently the leading kicker in camp. Coach Matt Rhule mentioned this development in his press conference with the media on Saturday afternoon.

I think Hohl is really coming on well and to be quite honest today was not a big special teams day today was like we kicked field goals in rhythm so meaning if it was a field goal attempt in a game we would have gone a field goal attempt.

Hohl transferred in from Iowa Western Community College. He redshirted in his lone season at Iowa Western before transferring to Nebraska.

This past spring, he was tabbed as the top transfer kicker at a Kohl’s Kicking Showcase. His family has a history with the program.

Hohl’s father was a tight end at Nebraska and was a member of the 1994 national championship team. His brother Jacob was a punter of the 2022 and 2023 teams.

Last season’s kicker, Tristan Alvano, has been working through a groin injury that has bothered him since the beginning of training camp. The sophomore was 9-of-15 on field goals and made all 27 extra-point attempts in 2023.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Depth at the kicking position is undoubtedly a positive, as Nebraska has struggled with special teams in recent years.
