John Gough and Yuna Araki cruise to Australian Master of the Amateurs titles

After setting course records in the first round on Tuesday, John Gough and Yuna Araki had targets on their backs all week long at the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Southern Golf Club in Melbourne.

Gough and Araki were both up to the challenge, as both players finished off impressive victories on Friday at Australia’s premier amateur event.

Gough fired a 4-under 68 in his final round to finish at 15-under 273 and earn a four-stroke victory over Gregor Tait of Scotland, while Araki carded a final round 71 (-2) to complete a wire-to-wire title run.

Gough, who led after three of the four rounds at Southern Golf Club, began the day with a one-shot lead over Tait but quickly widened his lead after picking up five birdies in the first nine holes. The back nine proved nothing more to be a nice walk for the Englishman, who finished with a 4-under 68.

The Englishman’s game travels well.

It was his fifth on three continents in less than three years following his victories at the Palmetto Amateur (2021), English Amateur, Spanish International (2022) and Lytham Trophy (2022).

Gough is also the first Englishman to win the coveted green jacket.

Men’s college golf team of the week: Charlotte 49ers

The Charlotte 49ers earned the title of men’s college golf team of the week after an dominant win in Georgia.

The Charlotte men began the season with a T-6 finish at the Sea Best Invitational and have improved week after week this Spring, culminating in their dominant win at the Linger Longer Invitational.

At 25 under, the 49ers won by 11 strokes over Georgia Tech (16 over Virginia) at the Great Waters Course in Eatonton, Georgia after a second consecutive day of shooting 11 under as a team.

According to the school, Charlotte is the first team outside a Power 5 conference to win the Linger Longer. Fifth-year senior John Gough claimed the individual title with a birdie on No. 18 by just one shot over Middle Tennessee State’s Connor McKay for his first collegiate win.

“What a great win for these guys and this team,” said 49ers head coach Ryan Cabbage. “They were so solid all three rounds. I could go on and on about how proud I am of these guys and the golf they played over the past three days. We had the second best team round of the day in round one, the best round of the day in Saturday’s second round and then to sleep on a five-shot lead and come out today and shoot the low team score of the day again is just incredible. I am just so excited and so happy for these guys.”
