Johannus Monday named ITA National Rookie of the Year

UT Tennis player Johannus Monday named ITA National Rookie of the Year

Tennessee freshman tennis player Johannus Monday became the third Volunteer to earn the ITA National Freshman of the Year award.

He joins current Tennessee head coach Chris Woodruff and Peter Handoyo as the only Vols to earn the honor.

Woodruff won the award in 1992 and Handoyo claimed the honor in 1999.

Monday, who hails from Hull, England, had a stellar first year on Rocky Top.

He was an All-Southeastern Conference First-Team Player and named ITA Ohio Valley Region Rookie of the Year.

Monday, named to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team, was the league’s Freshman of the Year.

He was also an All-America singles player after compiling a 32-9 record.

Johannus Monday named SEC Freshman of the Week

For the sixth time in seven weeks, UT’s Johannus Monday named SEC Freshman of the Week.

Tennessee tennis player Johannus Monday was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Wednesday.

Monday has claimed the award for the sixth time in seven weeks. He posted a pair of victories over top opponents against Alabama and Auburn.

Monday defeated the Tigers’ Tim Dollman, 6-0, 6-2, and knocked off the Crimson Tide’s Edson Ortiz on Sunday. The UT freshman downed Ortiz, the No. 89 singles player in the nation, 6-2, 6-2.

Monday has now defeated 10 ranked singles opponents and is 7-0 in singles matches in the SEC this season.

He has a 16-3 record in dual matches this season and 26-5 overall in singles competition for the Volunteers.

Monday hails from Hull, England.

Johannus Monday named SEC Freshman of the Week for fifth consecutive week.

For the fifth consecutive week, University of Tennessee tennis player Johannus Monday has been honored as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.

Monday and doubles partner Martim Prata helped the Volunteers secure a doubles point in a recent dual match against Charlotte with a 6-4 victory over Olle Wallin and Ignasi de Rueda.

In the Vols’ conference opener against Georgia on Friday, Prata and Monday helped the Big Orange clinch a doubles point as the duo outlasted Georgia’s team of Philip Henning and Billy Rowe.

In singles competition against the Bulldogs, Monday defeated Henning 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. It was Monday’s fifth win of the season against a ranked opponent.

Henning is ranked No. 18 in the country and Monday is 5-1 against ranked foes this season. The Vols are now the No. 3 team in the nation. Monday has a combined record of 10-3 in singles and doubles competition this season.

Johannus Monday, Luca Wiedenmann sweep SEC tennis honors

UT men’s tennis players sweep weekly conference honors.

For the fourth time this season, Tennessee freshman tennis player Johannus Monday has been named Southeastern Conference Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week.

Monday was not the only Volunteer to be honored by the SEC this week.

Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann was named SEC Player of the Week. It was the first weekly conference award as a Vol for Wiedenmann.

He had an 18-match winning streak in singles competition following last weekend’s performance at the ITA Indoor National Championships in Champaign, Illinois.

Monday has a combined record of 34-11 in singles and doubles this season and has 18 singles victory in his first season in Knoxville.

He has seven combined victories over ranked opponents in singles and doubles.

Tennessee tennis downs Texas

Recapping Tennessee’s 4-2 win over Texas on Sunday.

The Tennessee men’s tennis team closed out its stay at the ITA Indoor Championships with a 4-2 victory over No. 5 Texas in Champaign, Illinois.

The No. 10 Volunteers picked up its first win over the Longhorns in more than a decade. UT last defeated Texas 11 years ago in a long-running series that dates back to 1974.

The Vols clinched the doubles point as duo Martim Prata and Johannus Monday and Adam Walton and Pat Harper each rolled to 6-2 victories.

Monday, Luca Wiedenmann and Andrew Rogers all posted wins in singles.

Wiedenmann knocked off Texas’ Chih Chi Huang, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, to clinch the dual match victory for Tennessee (10-1).

Rogers downed Texas’ Evin McDonald, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Monday outlasted Eliot Spizzirri, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

The win over Texas (8-3) came one day after the Vols dropped its first dual match of the season, losing to No. 2 North Carolina, 4-2, on Saturday.

Vols sweep SEC tennis honors

Giles Hussey and Johannus Monday honored by SEC after Vols beat Duke, North Carolina State.

A pair of University of Tennessee men’s tennis players swept Southeastern Conference honors this week.

UT grad transfer Giles Hussey was named SEC co-Player of the Week, as he shared the award with Mississippi State’s Forian Broska, and Johannus Monday was named co-Freshman of the Week.

Monday has earned or shared the conference’s Freshman of the Week award for each of the last three weeks.

This week, he shares the award with South Carolina’s Toby Samuel.

The duo of Hussey and Monday went a combined 7-0 in the Vols’ two weekend matches against a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference fores in Duke and North Carolina State.

Tennessee has an 8-0 record heading into this week’s ITA Indoor National Championships.

The Big Orange will return to the courts on Friday when they collide with No. 2 North Carolina at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Illinois. The event will be hosted by the University of Illinois.

Johannus Monday named Freshman of the Week for second consecutive week

UT tennis player Johannus Monday named SEC Freshman of the Week for second straight time.

For the second consecutive week, University of Tennessee tennis player Johannus Monday has been honored by the Southeastern Conference.

Monday claimed SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second straight week after he defeated the country’s sixth-ranked player.

Monday knocked off Notre Dame’s Richard Ciamarra in comeback fashion to help the No. 10 Volunteers defeat the Irish in a dual match in Knoxville last week.

Monday has played in both singles and doubles in all of UT’s spring dual matches. He is 5-1 in singes and 5-1 in doubles.

Dating back to the fall season, Monday (14-3 singles record) has taken down two ranked opponents.

Monday and the Volunteers will be in action at home against Duke on Friday and North Carolina Sunday at UT’s Goodfriend Tennis Center.
