Interview with Joey Gaston, Part 5: motivating teammates

.@DonJamesSports learned that Joey Gaston’s search for growth as an athlete includes being a good teammate and leader.

Over his high school career, Joey Gaston has accumulated 31 touchdowns and a staggering 2,761 yards. Standing at 5-foot-8 and weighing 160 pounds, this junior quarterback initially honed his skills at St. Joseph Regional in Montvale (New Jersey), where he accounted for 1,876 yards of total offense, including 1,272 passing yards and 604 rushing yards, in his sophomore year. He then transferred to Iona Prep in New Rochelle (New York).

We have more questions for Gaston in this latest installment of our conversation, which looks at one of the most fascinating athletes on the high school scene today:

Trojans Wire: What are your team goals for 2023 and beyond?

Gaston: My team goals for the season are to motivate them, make sure we play 100% every play for each other, work through adversity, and win a state championship.

Trojans Wire: One thing you want people to know about you on and off the field?

Gaston: If I want something I’m going to get it.

Oklahoma fans were right about Lincoln Riley, at least for this specific season.

USC assistants need to be coaching for their jobs against Utah and into November.

Lincoln Riley did not assemble an elite 2023 roster, which surprised us and a lot of other observers.

Is USC ready to win in 2024 with Miller Moss or Malachi Nelson at quarterback? Lincoln Riley has to be honest about how he answers that question.

Brent Venables is coaching Oklahoma far better this year than Lincoln Riley is coaching USC. It’s up to Riley to change that reality against Utah.

Interview with Joey Gaston, part 4: a message for Brenden Rice

Find out what Joey Gaston told Brenden Rice in @DonJamesSports’ latest segment with the rising high school prospect.

Ice Spice is one of the most popular rap artists with a combined 21.5 million followers on Instagram, TikTok and X. She was recently named “Best New Artist” at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

Her younger brother is making a name for himself too. Joey Gaston is gaining attention for his quarterbacking excellence. He is thriving as the starting quarterback for one of the best high school teams in New York.

Gaston has run for 273 yards and 2 touchdowns on 44 carries. Through the air the junior quarterback has 1,140 yards and 7 touchdowns on a 63 percent completion rate. We continue our conversation with one of the more compelling figures in high school football today.

Trojans Wire: What is your favorite pregame song?

Gaston: Forgot I was the 1 by Lil Tjay

Trojans Wire: Favorite sports movie of all time?

Gaston: The Longest Yard

Trojans Wire: Favorite athlete ever?

Gaston: That’s easy, Jerry Rice! Tell Brenden Rice I said his pops is the G.O.A.T.

USC and Lincoln Riley need to have a plan in place if Alex Grinch coaches poorly and loses to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator might actually be worse than Alex Grinch, a fascinating plot point heading into the October 14 renewal of Irish-Trojans.

Brent Venables is coaching Oklahoma far better this year than Lincoln Riley is coaching USC. It’s up to Riley to change that reality against Notre Dame and Utah.

Interview with high school QB prospect Joey Gaston, part 3

Joey Gaston talked to @DonJamesSports about the power of turning dreams into reality.

Our interview of high school quarterback and rising recruit Joey Gaston continues.

Trojans Wire: What has your sister’s (Ice Spice) success showed you or helped you with mentally?

Gaston: Her dream becoming a reality helped me believe that as long as I continue to work hard and become better than I was yesterday, everyday I can do the same thing and make my dream a reality down a different lane in the sports world.

Trojans Wire: Favorite USC Trojan football player of all time?

Gaston: Easily, Reggie Bush — we both have similar running styles.

Trojans Wire: Favorite New York food? Chopped cheese, pizza or bacon, egg ‘n’ cheese?

Gaston: My favorite NY food has to be bacon, egg ‘n’ cheese.

Joey Gaston interview, Part 2: Life as a smaller quarterback

.@DonJamesSports asked Joey Gaston to name the QBs he enjoys watching. They all have something in common.

What makes Joey Gaston particularly special is his versatility as a dual-threat quarterback. Blessed with incredible speed, he clocks in at an impressive 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

However, his prowess isn’t limited to his speed; he’s equally formidable with his arm. Gaston has earned a place among the state of New York’s top 20 players in both passing yards and overall yards.

Trojans Wire: Who are your favorite QBs to watch in college or the NFL?

Gaston: My favorite quarterbacks to watch in the NFL are Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Brock Purdy.

Trojans Wire: Being a bit undersized at the position, would you be open to playing another position on the field?

Gaston: Yes, I will be willing to change my position if that’s what it takes to continue playing football on the next level.

Trojans Wire: Which schools have contacted you the most so far?

Gaston: Georgia Tech, Pitt, Maryland, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Penn State

Meet Ice Spice’s brother and rising football star, Joey Gaston

.@DonJamesSports sits down with a talented QB prospect who is chasing his dreams and is inspired by his very successful sister.

Joey Gaston is one of the premier quarterbacks in the state of New York in the 2025 class. He is also the younger brother of the hottest rap star of 2023, Ice Spice, who is the musical guest on the new season of Saturday Night Live. Ice Spice also has her own specialty drink at Dunkin Donuts.

Gaston is making a name for himself as a rising quarterback and athlete in the 2025 class. He could be someone the Trojans could land in the near future.

Celebrities going to play sports at USC isn’t new. Master P’s son, Romeo Miller, aka Lil Romeo, played there in the mid 2000s. Lebron James’ son Bronny James is a freshman at USC.

Sasha Obama, former President Barack Obama’s daughter, and Princess Salma bint Abdullah of Jordan graduated earlier this year from USC.

We sat down with Gaston for part one of a series looking at his view of life and his journey as a top athlete in the high school football world.

Trojans Wire: What’s your favorite thing about playing the quarterback position ?

Gaston: My favorite thing about playing QB is having the ability to drop back and pick apart the defense with my arm and legs every play.

Trojans Wire: What’s the main difference between playing at Iona prep versus St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, New Jersey?

Gaston: The main difference is I get to represent New York. New Jersey welcomed me with open arms but I’m happy to be back home representing my home state.

Trojans Wire: So, how is it being the younger brother of hip hop superstar Ice Spice?

Gaston: It’s so great to watch my sister achieve her dreams and it pushes me to achieve mine, but being her little brother is something I’ve been my whole life. Things haven’t changed before and after she became famous. I just continue to support her and she continues to support me.
