Report: Cowboys assistant Joe Whitt expected to interview for Steelers DC job

Three teams have now shown interest in Joe Whitt as their defensive coordinator; if Dan Quinn leaves Dallas, he’d be a candidate there, too. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr. seems to be on a clear trajectory to a defensive coordinator job. It’s the landing spot that’s still uncertain.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have joined the list of teams looking to speak with Whitt about their DC position, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a report Wednesday.

The Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens have already inquired about the 43-year-old assistant, who was hired in Dallas in January. Having worked previously with both head coach Mike McCarthy in Green Bay and coordinator Dan Quinn in Atlanta, Whitt’s reunion with both men in Dallas helped transform a Cowboys unit that had been historically bad in 2020 into the league leader in takeaways.

Longtime Pittsburgh assistant Keith Butler retired following the Steelers’ season, leaving an open coordinator position on head coach Mike Tomlin’s staff. The team is looking internally at assistant Teryl Austin, but also reportedly speaking with former Giants DC Patrick Graham and Saints defensive backs coach (and former Cowboys assistant) Kris Richard.

Whitt has called the role of Cowboys defensive coordinator a “dream job” for him. He could soon be just one phone call away from that possibility coming to fruition, with Quinn talking to a handful of teams about a head coaching position. He’s been named a finalist for two of them thus far. If Quinn departs Dallas, Whitt would likely be on a list of candidates to assume that title for the Cowboys.

Ravens request to interview Cowboys assistant Joe Whitt Jr. for coordinator job

The Cowboys defensive passing game coordinator/secondary coach also has a request from Seattle, though he’s said Dallas DC is his dream job. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Dan Quinn and Kellen Moore aren’t the only Dallas staffers who are finding themselves in demand now that the Cowboys’ season is over.

Joe Whitt Jr., the team’s defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach, has reportedly drawn the attention of the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have requested permission to speak with Whitt about becoming their new defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network’s Steve Wyche.

Last week, the Seattle Seahawks also asked to speak with Whitt about their coordinator position.

The Ravens parted ways with longtime DC Don “Wink” Martindale late last week after 10 seasons in Baltimore, a tenure that included a win in Super Bowl XLVII.

Whitt joined the Cowboys’ staff in January; he had worked with both head coach Mike McCarthy and defensive coordinator Quinn previously.

With Quinn now a highly-sought-after head coach candidate interviewing with several other clubs, Whitt could be a strong contender in the conversation to take over as Dallas DC if Quinn departs.

He’s on record as saying there are two coaching jobs that he considers his dream gigs: head coach of the University of South Florida, or defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.

The latter is a role he’s been in the mix for before.

“I’ve had coordinator interviews. I interviewed here,” he told Dallas media back in October. “I’m ready to call the plays, and I think a lot of people know that. But my dad always told me this: you do the best job with the job that you have, and your next opportunity will come. So I’m not worried about it. When that time comes, I’m ready.”

Whitt helped turn around the Cowboys secondary, into a unit that led the league in interceptions in 2021. Now he has interview requests from Seattle and Baltimore to helm the entire defense.

But he admits that Dallas has always held a special place in his heart.

“When I looked to the NFL teams and you see that star,” Whitt said, “it was just something I wanted to do. And even when I talked to my wife about it, it’s like, ‘If I ever become coordinator of the Cowboys, I can see doing that for a very long time.'”

While he spent 11 previous seasons under McCarthy in Green Bay and one year under Quinn in Atlanta, Whitt credits this past season with the Cowboys as instrumental in prepping him- and other staffers, like defensive line coach Aden Durde and senior defensive assistant George Edwards- for an eventual DC role.

“Dan has empowered me in a role this year of not only being the secondary coach, but he’s given me roles that have definitely put me in position of saying not just I can do that, I’m ready for it,” Whitt explained. “He’s given me those roles, he’s given me those responsibilities. I just take my hat off to him; it takes such confidence. He could come in here easily and say, ‘We’re going to do this this way,’ and he doesn’t do it. ‘Hey Joe, how do you want to do this? AD, how do you want to do this? George, how do you want to do this?’ Then he goes and we come together as a staff and make a decision and we move forward. He’s growing all of us to make sure we’re in position to make sure we one day can run the defense.”

That opportunity could indeed come for Whitt in Dallas. But Seattle and Baltimore may have something to say about it in the meantime.

Mo Linguist leaves Cowboys staff for role at Michigan

Former Cowboys secondary coach Maurice Linguist is headed to the University of Michigan to coach the cornerbacks amongst other roles.

The coaching staff shuffle continues for the Dallas Cowboys on the defensive side of the ball. While the hiring of Dan Quinn to run the defense was the biggest notable splash, bringing Joe Whitt, Jr. to coach the secondary was just as important of an acquisition. The hiring of Whitt effectively meant the replacement of Maurice “Mo” Linguist.

Linguist is now set to join Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff at the University of Michigan. Linguist will join the Wolverines as a co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach.

Linguist, 36, only spent one year in Dallas as their secondary coach alongside Al Harris where it gradually improved over the course of a 16-game season. The Cowboys had 10 interceptions in 2020. It was his first year working in the professional ranks after coming over from Texas A&M where he worked with the cornerbacks group. He also coached at Minnesota, Mississippi State and Iowa State among other stops.

There is no official link between Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and newly installed defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Or at least, there wasn’t one before. There is now though, in a round about way. On Wednesday morning it has been announced the Cowboys will be adding Joe Whitt, Jr. to the defensive coaching staff as the passing game coordinator.

Whitt spent several years with McCarthy in Green Bay, and was considered for the defensive coordinator’s position last offseason that eventually went to one-and-done Mike Nolan. Last season, he worked as the defensive passing game coordinator for Quinn’s Falcons. Now, the three are together again, for the first time, in Dallas, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. It’s a two-year contract for Whitt.

The 42-year old former cornerback was the Packers quality control coach in 2008, then ascended to their DB coach from 2009 through 2017. He was Mccarthy’s defensive passing game coordinator in 2018 before the entire staff was let go.

He held the same title in Cleveland for one year, and then that staff was let go. In 2020 with the Falcons he stayed on after Dan Quinn was fired and Raheem Morris moved up to interim head coach.

Whitt was still under contract in Atlanta, but the Falcons – who are searching for their new coach – approved the move.

In his time as a coach, Whitt had seen several of his players make the Pro Bowl, including Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Sam Shields and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Last season under Nolan, the Cowboys had Al Harris and Mo Linguist coordinating the secondary. To this point, both remain employed by the Cowboys. Dallas has already fired defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and has yet to replace him. Quinn worked his way up the defensive hierarchy as a defensive line coach and prefers a 40-front as opposed to Tomsula’s specialty, the 3-4. The Cowboys still have assistant line coach Leon Lett under contract, and also linebackers coach Scott McCurley who also came from Green Bay with McCarthy.
